Book The Mythological Pursuit of Justice Legendary Women of the past and female exclusion from power today

Download or read book The Mythological Pursuit of Justice Legendary Women of the past and female exclusion from power today written by Francesca Ceserani and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2019 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: 85/100, Birkbeck, University of London (Law), course: Human Rights, language: English, abstract: This research endeavours to explain that the stories of legendary women of the past should not be neglected, since they provide valid examples that clarify the reasons for female exclusion from power. Moreover, it is therefore also natural to wonder why their femininity was ripped away from them. Antigone, Clytemnestra and Medea are criminals, and their outrageous actions go against natural and positive law. They are not women. Furthermore, in order to give them back their womanhood, they must be disempowered. Further reflections will seek to find answers to the main question of the research: how can their stories contribute to explain women’s exclusion from power today? History demonstrated to be the theatre of the oppressed, the stage in which the characters have proved to excel in abusing and taking advantage of the losers of the game, the oppressed. Among them lie women, who have certainly always been kept in the back row during men’s performance. More specifically, women were and are still taken away from the power, a matter that has ultimately been reserved exclusively for manhood.

Book Rescuing Women from American Mythology

Download or read book Rescuing Women from American Mythology written by Michael A. Solis and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores American mythology through the lens of comic books and superheroes, specifically exploring the subject from an historical perspective in order to capture the origins of sexism and misogyny, as found in the comic book stories that have shaped so many young people and their attitudes. It provides a detailed analysis of America’s inextricable relationship with sexist institutions, specific historical events, and cultural attitudes, all of which are captured by, and perpetuated, in comic books, TV, film, and advertising. The implicit argument this book makes is that sexism and misogyny are not the product of nefarious individuals with overt agendas; instead, sexism and misogyny are products of our mythology and the associated archetypal components that shape a fabricated design of the world, a design shaped by men and unwittingly agreed to by women, thus, perpetuating a male-dominated mythological, religious, and historical social structure.

Book Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists 50th anniversary edition

Download or read book Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists 50th anniversary edition written by Linda Nochlin and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fiftieth anniversary edition of the essay that is now recognized as the first major work of feminist art theory—published together with author Linda Nochlin’s reflections three decades later. Many scholars have called Linda Nochlin’s seminal essay on women artists the first real attempt at a feminist history of art. In her revolutionary essay, Nochlin refused to answer the question of why there had been no “great women artists” on its own corrupted terms, and instead, she dismantled the very concept of greatness, unraveling the basic assumptions that created the male-centric genius in art. With unparalleled insight and wit, Nochlin questioned the acceptance of a white male viewpoint in art history. And future freedom, as she saw it, requires women to leap into the unknown and risk demolishing the art world’s institutions in order to rebuild them anew. In this stand-alone anniversary edition, Nochlin’s essay is published alongside its reappraisal, “Thirty Years After.” Written in an era of thriving feminist theory, as well as queer theory, race, and postcolonial studies, “Thirty Years After” is a striking reflection on the emergence of a whole new canon. With reference to Joan Mitchell, Louise Bourgeois, Cindy Sherman, and many more, Nochlin diagnoses the state of women and art with unmatched precision and verve. “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” has become a slogan and rallying cry that resonates across culture and society. In the 2020s, Nochlin’s message could not be more urgent: as she put it in 2015, “There is still a long way to go.”

Book Women Race Class

Download or read book Women Race Class written by Angela Y. Davis and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-06-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of our most important scholars and civil rights activist icon, a powerful study of the women’s liberation movement and the tangled knot of oppression facing Black women. “Angela Davis is herself a woman of undeniable courage. She should be heard.”—The New York Times Angela Davis provides a powerful history of the social and political influence of whiteness and elitism in feminism, from abolitionist days to the present, and demonstrates how the racist and classist biases of its leaders inevitably hampered any collective ambitions. While Black women were aided by some activists like Sarah and Angelina Grimke and the suffrage cause found unwavering support in Frederick Douglass, many women played on the fears of white supremacists for political gain rather than take an intersectional approach to liberation. Here, Davis not only contextualizes the legacy and pitfalls of civil and women’s rights activists, but also discusses Communist women, the murder of Emmitt Till, and Margaret Sanger’s racism. Davis shows readers how the inequalities between Black and white women influence the contemporary issues of rape, reproductive freedom, housework and child care in this bold and indispensable work.

Book Debunking Women s History

Download or read book Debunking Women s History written by Ed Rayner and published by Amberley Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What you didn't know about famous and infamous women in history. History is not something that counts to men's credit alone, though they have often claimed it as their exclusive achievement. This book deals with the part that women have played in history, and acknowledges their role, although at the time they may have received little acknowledgment for it. For women of all stations and in all walks of life have made their contribution to human history, whether they have been queens or rulers, scientists or doctors, entertainers or artists, radicals or conservatives, or simply wives and mothers. Whether, too, they have made that contribution openly and on their own account, or whether they have used their sometimes subordinate position in society to engineer it by more subtle means. This book serves to stress this contribution, sometimes merely to remind the reader of it and to restate it, but sometimes, where necessary, to re-evaluate its true importance. Where myths or legends or simple forgetfulness have obscured the value of women's contributions to government, scientific research, artistic achievement, pioneering progress or radical reform, the writers have sought to remedy the defect and restore women to their rightful importance, and through that to award them the esteem that they properly deserve.

Sometimes the book simply discusses oddness by itself and sometimes the book provides controversy. Here is a little bit to get you going. -Who was Adam's first wife? Eve was his second wife.-Who was the first named female Genetic Engineer?-Who made the first missile? She was not German.-How many times did Noah build his boat? More than once.-What happened to Moses' adoptive mom? Scythians were involved.-Who was the father of Cain? Possibly not who you think.-Where did Pharaoh Tutankhamen's sister go? As a hint; they named Scotland after her.-Why did they burn Joan of Arc? You got it wrong again.-Who used Cyrus the Great's head as a drinking cup?-Who killed over 600 girls so she could take an exotic bath? Hint- her cousin was Vlad Dracula and she lived near Transylvania.-What was odd about Poppaea, Nero's last wife?-Who was Mother Shipton and what did she see?-Why did Queen Isabella give Columbus Ships?-Which Cleopatra had 2 of her husbands killed before they reached puberty? With that let me say, there are many new things to learn as you read this book. As the modern times have so very many outlets for answers, this book concentrates on ancient times up until about 200 years ago.

Book excerpt: Before taking her place as the second woman on the U.S. Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg quietly led a revolution and forever changed life in America for both men and women. She was born in 1933 in a working-class neighborhood in Brooklyn. Her father, an immigrant, had no formal education beyond night school to learn English. She was brilliant-college classmates described her as "scary smart." She wanted to be a lawyer, but the legal profession was all but closed to women.Reserved and quiet, she didn't set out to be a trailblazer, but there was something in her way: the law. Hundreds of years of legal precedent, a line of devastating Supreme Court cases, and countless statutes depriving women of equal citizenship and keeping them from full participation in the legal and political process. So she took it upon herself to change the laws of the United States.Mixing social and legal history with a moving and intimate biography, award-winning author Teri Kanefield captures a turbulent era and tells the story of how Ruth Bader Ginsburg defied expectations to become one of the most influential and powerful women in America."We hear many voices in this wonderfully engaging biography of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and come away with a far richer understanding of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and of what the rise of feminism has meant for all of us, whatever our gender, whatever our politics." --Kathleen Vanden Heuvel, Law Library Director, Adjunct Professor of Law, University of California, Berkeley School of Law"An absorbing personal biography of Ruth Bader Ginsburg that is also equal parts legal history and political philosophy. Like Ginsburg herself, Kanefield's narrative is precise, candid, logical, yet filled with humor and irony. She shows the reader the warmth and humility behind a serious legal mind. Free to Be Ruth Bader Ginsburg will appeal to a wide range of readers and is a valuable addition to all types of libraries." --Suzy Szasz Palmer, Past President, Virginia Library Association"An engrossing biography of Ruth Bader Ginsburg that doubles as a primer on how America's champions for gender equality pressed their cause in the courts. Recommended for every law student, lawyer, and lay reader looking for an authoritative yet readable treatment of how the law shapes women's lives, and vice-versa." --Kathleen Morris, Associate Professor of Law, Golden Gate Law School"Free to Be is a richly detailed biography offering fascinating insights into the groundbreaking career of Ruth Bader Ginsberg and at the same time charting for readers a thorough and engaging history of the law of sex discrimination and equal protection jurisprudence that she helped to shape. Kanefield's book is a must read, not only for fans of RBG but for anyone interested in a more complete understanding of the evolution of women's rights and legal status in the U.S." --Sharmilla Lodhia, Associate Professor, Women's and Gender Studies, Santa Clara University.
