Book Dramatic Revisions of Myths Fairy Tales and Legends

Download or read book Dramatic Revisions of Myths Fairy Tales and Legends written by Verna A. Foster and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-10-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These new essays explore the ways in which contemporary dramatists have retold or otherwise made use of myths, fairy tales and legends from a variety of cultures, including Greek, West African, North American, Japanese, and various parts of Europe. The dramatists discussed range from well-established playwrights such as Tony Kushner, Caryl Churchill, and Timberlake Wertenbaker to new theatrical stars such as Sarah Ruhl and Tarell Alvin McCraney. The book contributes to the current discussion of adaptation theory by examining the different ways, and for what purposes, plays revise mythic stories and characters. The essays contribute to studies of literary uses of myth by focusing on how recent dramatists have used myths, fairy tales and legends to address contemporary concerns, especially changing representations of women and the politics of gender relations but also topics such as damage to the environment and political violence.

Book The King James Bible ONLY

Download or read book The King James Bible ONLY written by LaVay Lewis and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for those of you who believe you could be, indeed should be, enjoying a happier, more satisfying life. You do not accept the notion that an individual can simply talk himself or herself into that state. You may have a broken heart, or be facing cancer, or maybe simply know there's more to life than you have. You acknowledge your helplessness without the power of God, but you know he is able to make you happy and your life really worth living. You greatly desire to be touched and to learn and accept His promises and provisions. You may know to search the scriptures because Jesus said we live by every Word of God, but that may present a challenge because the words in the King James Bible do not say the same things as the words in the versions. Does that really make a difference? What are some changes in the text? Are they important? Are you possibly missing anything? Are you reading translation errors? Are you bored with Bible studies but want to know more about His Word? In brief, is the Word of God important to you? If so, this book is for you. It was written with you in mind.

Book Ancient History a Revised Chronology

Download or read book Ancient History a Revised Chronology written by Anthony Lyle and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-05-29 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a culmination of that research. After trashing his work 10 times and starting over, he managed to get a revised chronology that seemed to be more accurate than that being put out by the status quo universities. It combines secular / world history with Biblical history in a far more even and smoother match than that proposed by former historians who have attempted the same. This is his version 12, which doesnt try to match different histories based on dates, but rather by matching people and events and then applying revised dates to those events and people. This work will call into question the conclusions of historians of the last 200 years, about the ancient periods of time, and provide an alternative dating for those times. It is a World History in that it incorporates the ancient history of India, China, Japan, as well as the traditional Middle Eastern and European societies of ancient times. It re-evaluates the beginnings of civilization and the solar system, refuting common historical and scienti?? c beliefs of the modern world. Documents that have previously been written off as Mythology have been re-evaluated as well, as they give a different perspective of ancient times and what happened back then. The use and creation of calendars is an important feature added to this work which is seldom taken into account by modern histories. Incorporated in this work are many of the more recent archaeological ?? nds that have yet to be incorporated in status quo works and institutions. He makes no apology for the fact that this is Biblically based, and the conclusions that have been reached by this work ?? t very well in Biblical contexts and adds some understanding to the events that took place in the Biblical narratives.

Book Allegorical Readers and Cultural Revision in Ancient Alexandria

Download or read book Allegorical Readers and Cultural Revision in Ancient Alexandria written by David Dawson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allegorical readings of literary or religious texts always begin as counterreadings, starting with denial or negation, challenging the literal sense: "You have read the text this way, but I will read it differently." David Dawson insists that ancient allegory is best understood not simply as a way of reading texts, but as a way of using non-literal readings to reinterpret culture and society. Here he describes how some ancient pagan, Jewish, and Christian interpreters used allegory to endorse, revise, and subvert competing Christian and pagan world views. This reassessment of allegorical reading emphasizes socio-cultural contexts rather than purely formal literary features, opening with an analysis of the pagan use of etymology and allegory in the Hellenistic world and pagan opposition to both techniques. The remainder of the book presents three Hellenistic religious writers who each typify distinctive models of allegorical interpretation: the Jewish exegete Philo, the Christian Gnostic Valentinus, and the Christian Platonist Clement. The study engages issues in the fields of classics, history of Christianity and Hellenistic Judaism, literary criticism and theory, and more broadly, critical theory and cultural criticism.

Book Hidden Bible Truths in Plain View

Download or read book Hidden Bible Truths in Plain View written by Windell Gillis and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ and the apostles, along with Polycarp, Ignatius, and Hermes, carried the true Word of God deep into the first church age. Yet Satan attempted to infiltrate the true path of the Word with help from unbelievers who were more than willing to do his dirty work. Because of this, the structural religious imprints left by ancient pagan civilization began to take a toll on the religious denominational world in such a subtle manner that it has gone unnoticed. In Hidden Bible Truths in Plain View, author Windell Gillis explains how since the Bible is the only real and perfect truth, Christian history can only be real and true if it agrees completely with the Bible. This history does! Messengers to the seven church ages, who are revealed here, were able to turn the people back to God in each age, if only for a season. With Philo having perverted the definition of the Logos, which changed the way people worshipped with respect to the Godhead, and with so much confusion in the religious world—as proven by the forty thousand different denominational groups today—something must happen! And it did! The revelation of Malachi 4 and Revelation 10:7 concerning the mystery of God is unveiled in Hidden Bible Truths in Plain View—to the shock of Christians worldwide.

Book The Year of Lear

Download or read book The Year of Lear written by James Shapiro and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Preeminent Shakespeare scholar James Shapiro shows how the tumultuous events in England in 1606 affected Shakespeare and shaped the three great tragedies he wrote that year--King Lear, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra. In the years leading up to 1606, since the death of Queen Elizabeth and the arrival in England of her successor, King James of Scotland, Shakespeare's great productivity had ebbed, and it may have seemed to some that his prolific genius was a thing of the past. But that year, at age forty-two, he found his footing again, finishing a play he had begun the previous autumn--King Lear--then writing two other great tragedies, Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra. It was a memorable year in England as well--and a grim one, in the aftermath of a terrorist plot conceived by a small group of Catholic gentry that had been uncovered at the last hour. The foiled Gunpowder Plot would have blown up the king and royal family along with the nation's political and religious leadership. The aborted plot renewed anti-Catholic sentiment and laid bare divisions in the kingdom. It was against this background that Shakespeare finished Lear, a play about a divided kingdom, then wrote a tragedy that turned on the murder of a Scottish king, Macbeth. He ended this astonishing year with a third masterpiece no less steeped in current events and concerns: Antony and Cleopatra. The Year of Lear sheds light on these three great tragedies by placing them in the context of their times, while also allowing us greater insight into how Shakespeare was personally touched by such events as a terrible outbreak of plague and growing religious divisions. For anyone interested in Shakespeare, this is an indispensable book"--

Book Visions and Revisions of Europe

Download or read book Visions and Revisions of Europe written by Karolina Czerska-Shaw and published by Göttingen University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visions and Revisions of Europe offers a multidisciplinary debate on the various political, social, and cultural issues that are at the heart of contemporary European discourse, with a focus on the relations between the so-called “New” and “Old” Europe. A range of possible scenarios for the future of the EU, as well as a discussion of the factors affecting current crises are at the forefront of the debate, which lead the reader to reflect upon often overlooked aspects of European integration, such as Germany’s hegemonic role in the Union, or historical narratives and myths that need to be deconstructed and critically analysed. Contemporary populist movements also play a key role, as do the often difficult processes of migration and EU mobility, which reveal the tensions, fears, and lines of exclusion in contemporary European societies. Finally, the role of values – namely an adherence to human rights and responsibility over the global social order – which in the 1970s was a cornerstone of EU discursive action and identity building, serves as a lasting point of reflection on the uncertain future of the EU’s axio-normative direction(s).

Book The importance of being a reader A revision of Oscar Wilde s works

Download or read book The importance of being a reader A revision of Oscar Wilde s works written by Christina Pascual Aransáez and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2014-11 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Wilde's works from the hypothesis that they call upon the active participation of the reader in the production of meaning. It has a twofold objective: first, it shows that Wilde's emphasis on the creative role of the audience in his critical writings makes him conceive the reader as a co-creator in the construction of meaning. Second, it analyses the strategies which Wilde employs to impel the reader to collaborate in the creation of meaning of his literary works and casts light upon the social criticism derived from these. The examination of Wilde’s writings reveals how he gradually combined more sophisticated techniques that encouraged the reader's dynamic role with the progressive exploitation of self-advertising strategies for professional purposes. These allowed the ‘commercial’ Oscar to make his works successful among the Victorian public without betraying the ‘literary’ Wilde’s aesthetic principles. The present study re-evaluates Wilde as a critic and as a writer. It demonstrates that, while Wilde the ‘myth’ was ahead of his time in many ways, Wilde the ‘ARTIST’ anticipated in his aesthetic theory various themes which occupy contemporary literary theoreticians. Thus, it may contribute to give him the status he rightly deserves in the history of literature.

Book Cauldron of Changes

Download or read book Cauldron of Changes written by Janice C. Crosby and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-10-26 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spiritual dimensions in the fantastic works of both firmly established and newer writers--including such talents as Marion Zimmer Bradley, Alice Walker, Patricia Kennealy, Octavia Butler, Toni Morrison and Ntozake Shange--are examined in this book. The author links their fantastic novels to actual currents within the feminist spirituality movement, addressing the genre's use of goddess worship, psychic phenomena, and reverence for the earth. Special emphasis is given to both the struggle to provide an alternative to men-centered experience and to the need to articulate ways in which feminists can achieve personal and social power.

Download or read book The Need for Revision written by David P. Owen, Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we have more teacher/intellectuals in our classrooms? This book demonstrates that we can. But many things have to change before intellectual standards appear again in public schools. David Owen attempts to show, but not in outline form, how we can revise our schools. Can we escape the rut in which public education finds itself, dominated by the inane (tests), the stifling (reduction of school to job training), and the insane (transformation of a life-affirming odyssey of the mind to clichés, information gathering, and slogans)? We can reclaim the beauty of an education if we join David and re-vise our classrooms. Education is uncertain, risky, wonderously adventurous—yet schooling has become stale. No—tediously dreadful. There is a need to revise. Reject standardized tests! Repeal pay for performance! Eject No Child Left Behind before no child has a thoughtful mind left. It is time to revise, and David’s book explains why. Are we still interested in the mind, soul, and substance of the individual? Does it matter who we are and become, or just what we do? If these questions still matter, dwell carefully with David’s ideas and transform yourself, your students, school, community, state, nation, and world. It is time to revise them all. John A. Weaver, Georgia Southern University
