Download or read book The Prone Gunman written by Jean-Patrick Manchette and published by City Lights Publishers. This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "His books are all action, unfolding with a laconic efficiency that would make his killers proud."—The Economist Martin Terrier is a hired killer who wants out of the game—so he can settle down and marry his childhood sweetheart. After all, that's why he took up this profession! But "the company" won't let him go: they have other plans. Once again, the gunman must assume the prone firing position. A tour de force, this violent tale shatters as many illusions about life and politics as it does bodies. Jean-Patrick Manchette subjects his characters and the reader alike to a fierce exercise in style. This tightly plotted, corrosive parody of "the success story" is widely considered to be Manchette's masterpiece, and was named a New York Times "Notable Book." The Prone Gunman is a classic of modern noir. "For Manchette and the generation of writers who followed him, the crime novel is no mere entertainment, but a means to strip bare the failures of society, ripping through veils of appearance, deceit, and manipulation to the greed and violence that are the society's true engines."—Boston Globe "There's not a superfluous word or overdone effect . . . one of the last cool, compact and shockingly original crime novels Manchette left as his legacy to modern noir fiction."—New York Times "For the first time readers can experience in English translation the masterful thriller considered Manchette's finest, proof positive that the French knew what they were talking about when they labeled this sort of novel 'noir'."—Publishers Weekly "This superbly muscular translation of the late French mystery writer Jean-Patrick Manchette's most celebrated work, The Prone Gunman, is the third volume issued [by] City Lights Noir. The series may prove to be the most needed contribution to contemporary fiction by any publisher in a good long while."—The San Francisco Chronicle Jean-Patrick Manchette was a French crime novelist credited with reinventing and reinvigorating the genre. He wrote ten short novels in the 1970s and early 80s, and is widely recognized as the foremost French crime fiction author of that time. His stories are violent, existentialist explorations of the human condition and French society. Jazz saxophonist and screenwriter, Manchette was also a left-wing activist influenced as much by the writings of the Situationist International as by Dashiell Hammett. Jean-Patrick Manchette's Three to Kill as well as the movie tie-in The Gunman are also published by City Lights Publishers.

Book The House that Was Eureka

Download or read book The House that Was Eureka written by Nadia Wheatley and published by Text Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the New South Wales Premier's Children's Book Award, 1985. It's 1981 and Evie is sixteen. She has left school but can't find work, and her family has just moved into the run-down inner Sydney suburb of Newtown. Noel lives in the adjoining terrace house. He's fifteen, not taking school seriously and fed up with looking after his ancient bed-ridden grandmother. As a friendship grows between Evie and Noel, the past is set back in motion, and the events of the 1930s Depression era begin to play out in the high-unemployment times of the early 1980s, and the house again is the centre of the Sydney anti-eviction campaign of 1931. Based on historical fact, meticulously researched, The House that Was Eureka is a critically acclaimed novel about a history we all share. Nadia Wheatley is a long-standing fixture of Australian literature having written fiction and non-fiction for both children and adults. Seven of her books have been Children's Book Council of Australia Honour Books including Five Times Dizzy, The House that Was Eureka and My Place. She has won the New South Wales Premier's Children's Book Prize twice, for The House that Was Eureka and Five Times Dizzy and is known and respected for her contributions to Indigenous communities and the preservation of environment. Nadia is currently the Artist in Residence at The University of Sydney. textclassics.com.au 'A fine piece of work, well researched and beautifully plotted around the Depression when people were tipped out of their houses by landlords and unemployed men took to the roads with swags.' Sydney Morning Herald 'An absorbing and wholly convincing recreation of the Depression of the 1930s, with the traumatic experiences of the Cruise family, destitute and threatened with eviction, running parallel to the problems of today.' Australian Book Review 'Wheatley's book has urgency and a fierce strength...The characters from both eras are "alive and flying", freedom fighters who are aware that they are making history.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a lonely road in the kingdom of Sarven, lone outlaw Jack Spade robs an unsuspecting merchant. This is no random crime, however. He was hired to steal a very specific thing: the mysterious Box of Andelaine, which has remained sealed for millennia despite the best efforts of all the world's most powerful sorcerers. It remained sealed, at least, until out of idle curiosity the gunman tried the lid, only for it to swing wide without protest. Even the simple act of opening a box and removing the seemingly unassuming necklace inside has dire consequences for the solitary roughrider. Between the cult of deadly warriors in the service of angels and the demonic rider who won't stay dead for long, the hounds of heaven and hell are out for blood. The worst part for their increasingly desperate quarry is that no one will even tell him why. Seemingly the only solution for the man is to trust the word of an enigmatic sorceress known only as Lucy and travel across a wide, trackless frontier to the foreign, unwelcoming land on the other side. Through it all, the lone gunman can never be quite sure whether or not he's on his last ride.

Book Narrative Framing in Contemporary American Novels

Download or read book Narrative Framing in Contemporary American Novels written by Sławomir Studniarz and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines a range of novels and novellas published over the course of nearly forty years, from 1968 to 2014, including E.L. Doctorow’s Andrew’s Brain, John Gardner’s “The King’s Indian,” Paul Auster’s Travels in the Scriptorium, Peter Straub’s Mr. X, and Joyce Carol Oates’ Expensive People. These texts display one crucial unifying thread: they are doubly-mediated fictions, fictions in parentheses, so to speak. The application of narrative framing and embedding has been commonly acknowledged and abundantly researched in various works belonging to the Western literary heritage. However, its use in the twentieth and twenty-first century fiction has not been adequately explored, perhaps with the exception of the literary creations of such giants as Vladimir Nabokov and John Barth. Despite this critical oversight, narrative frames prove to be a major resource for modern-day novelists, who adapt this literary device and very effectively put it to their own uses. The essays collected in this volume will serve to spark the revival of interest in this time-honored narrative tool, demonstrating its validity for research into more recently created novels.

Book excerpt: Some men look to keep the peace. Others look to make trouble. But sometimes even the most law-abiding of men are compelled to cross the line…. Easy Bill Gates is just such a man—as quick with a smile and as slow to anger as Gary Cooper in High Noon. He’s a model of restraint…until he’s forced to strap on a holster and kill the outlaw who murdered his brother. But more than his honor is at stake. A ruthless land baron is out to grab Bill’s ranch and he’s hired a gang of gunslingers to get Bill out of the way. Between the rancher who wants to take his land, and the young guns who want to take his life, Easy Bill will have to make some hard choices—and fast draws—to avoid becoming just another notch in the Gunman’s Tally. Hailing from the western states of Nebraska, Oklahoma and Montana, Hubbard grew up surrounded by grizzled frontiersmen and leather-tough cowboys, counting a Native American medicine man as one of his closest friends. When he chose to write stories of the Old West, Hubbard didn’t have to go far to do his research, drawing on his own memories of a youth steeped in the life and legends of the American frontier. Also includes the Western adventure, Ruin at Rio Piedras, the story of a young cowboy kicked off a ranch for falling in love with the owner’s daughter…only to devise a whip-smart plan to win the day—and the girl. “Outstanding.” —Midwest Book Review
