Book Pirate Princes and Yankee Jacks

Download or read book Pirate Princes and Yankee Jacks written by Daniel Henderson and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2020-09-13 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pirate Princes and Yankee Jacks is a tribute to the men and boys who created and served in America's first navy. It sets forth David Forsyth's Adventures in America's Battles on Sea and Desert with the Buccaneer Princes of Barbary* (North Africa), with an Account of a Search under the Sands of the Sahara Desert for the Treasure-filled Tomb of Ancient Kings. It is about the pioneering American captains and sailors who once suffered slavery and torture to make the Mediterranean a safe sea for Yankee vessels. It also remembers the Americans who lay for nine years in Turkish prisons and about General William Eaton, who led a little band of Americans and Greeks on a desperate venture across the North African desert to release the imprisoned crew of the Philadelphia from Turkish bondage, and who, for the first time, raised the United States flag over a fort of the old world. * Barbary, or the Barbary Coast, is an area along the North Coast of Africa. It was not always a unified political entity. From the 16th century onwards, it was divided into the political entities of the Regency of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripolitania (Tripoli). Major rulers and petty monarchs during the times of the Barbary States' plundering parties included the Pasha or Dey of Algiers, the Bey of Tunis and the Bey of Tripoli. ================ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Pirate Princes, Yankee Jacks, Barbary Coast, Algiers, Tunis, Tripolitania, Tripoli, America, USA, First Navy, Battles, Sea, Desert, Buccaneer Princes, North Africa, Sands, Sahara Desert, Treasure, Tomb, Ancient Kings, captains, Yankee vessels, Turkey, imprisoned, prisoner, General William Eaton, the Philadelphia, bondage, release, rescue, US Flag, political entity, Barbary States, Pasha, Dey of Algiers, Bey of Tunis, Bey of Tripoli, Man from the East, Capture, Corsairs, Rose of Egypt, First Voyage, Mutiny, Betrayal, American Frigate, Cattleship, Old Ironsides, Connecticut Yankee, sultan, Court of Tunis, blow up, loss, American Eagle, African Desert, Desert Girl, Reuben James, Save, Stephen Decatur, Desert City, Derne, Sold, Slavery, Home Surprises, Pirate Nest, Bloody Bashaws, Sixpence, ransom, Wrecking, Piracy, Communities, Mediterranean, Roman Times, Fighter, Join, Caravan, Tokra, Treasure City, Dreams, Gloomy, Liberate, Chains of Barbarism, First Time, Fort, Old World, Tobruk,

Book PUCK OF POOK s HILL fantasy action and adventure through Britain s historical past

Download or read book PUCK OF POOK s HILL fantasy action and adventure through Britain s historical past written by Rudyard Kipling and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2020 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puck of Pook's Hill is a fantasy book by Rudyard Kipling. It contains a series of short stories set in different periods of English history. It counts both as historical fantasy and contemporary fantasy. The stories are narrated to two children living near Burwash, East Sussex, England in the area of Kipling's own house – “Bateman's,” by people magically plucked out of history by the elf Puck. Synopsis: When Dan and Una stage a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream in a fairy ring, they are astonished by the appearance of Puck in person. He explains that he is the last of the People of the Hills, who started as gods before descending into this world. Puck leads the two children in a series of extraordinary historical adventures in which they meet, Romans, Crusaders, Saxons and Vikings. Puck calmly concludes the series of stories: "Weland gave the Sword, The Sword gave the Treasure, and the Treasure gave the Law. It's as natural as an oak growing" and herein lies the magic. Kipling's charming songs and verses, including the famous Smuggler's Song are placed between each thrilling story. The book is beautifully illustrated by H.R. Millar and Arthur Rackham. ============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Puck of Pook’s hill, fantasy fiction, folklore, myths, legends, magic, children’s stories, fables, children’s fiction, juvenile fiction, young adult fiction, storyteller, Ælueva, Aelueva, Amal, Aquila, Aquila, arrow, Ash, Baron’s, Beacon, Borkum, Britain, brook, Bury, Cæsar, Caesar, Castle, children, Christian, Cohort, coin, crusader, Dallington, Dan, Devil, Duke, Elias, Emperor, Empire, England, Fairy Ring, Faun, Fulke, Gaul, Gilbert, Gods, gold, Great, heart, Hobden, horses, Hugh, Jehan, King, kiss, knight, Manor House, Marsh, Master, Maximus, Mithras, Norman, Normandy, North, novice, palace, parchment, Parnesius, Pater, people of the hills, Pertinax, Pevensey, Pharisees, Pict, ponies, Prince, Princess, Puck, Richard, Roman, Rome, Santlache, Saxon, sea, Sebastian, secrets, serpentine, shield, ship, South, Stavanger, sword, Theodosius, Thorkild, Thorn, tower, Una, velvet, Victrix, violets, Volaterrae, Weland’s sword, whales, white-ash, Whitgift, Winged Hats, Witta, woods, Xenophon, tree song, young men, harp song, dane women, joyous venture, old men, runes, centurion of the thirtieth, 30th, british-roman, great wall, hal o’ the draft, smugglers’ song, bee boy, dymchurch flit, three-part, fifth river, treasure, law, children’s song,

Book QUEEN OF THE PIRATE ISLE A Children s Adventure Story

Download or read book QUEEN OF THE PIRATE ISLE A Children s Adventure Story written by Bret Harte and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2020-07-08 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a quintessential children’s make-up-adventure story and is delightful in its telling. The 28 color images are exquisitely crafted and reflect and add to the essence of the story. Our story is set in the San Francisco area during the Gold Rush era of the late 1840’s and early 1850’s. The Queen of the Pirate Isle is about an imaginative young girl named Polly, who, with her cousin Hickory, a small Chinese boy named Wan Lee, and a neighbour named Patsey, who, after a game of pirates in the house, decide to “run away” to become real pirates. On their way they pass through the mining area where they slip and fall down a steep mud-slide. Polly’s doll’s removable hair got caught on something and ripped off during the fall and is now bald. They end up falling asleep in a nearby mine and are awoken and brought home by the miners, who have dressed up as pirates as a thank-you to Polly and the children as the mine in which they fell asleep led the miners to a new seam of gold.

They were written by Irving Crump [1887-1979], a writer and editor of Boys' Life, and in 1922 they were published as a book, "Og - Son of Fire." A US nation-wide radio show, "Og - Son of Fire" aired in 1934-35, hosted by Libby. It was originally aired by WBBM, Chicago and later by WABC, New York and then over the CBS radio network. Book THE WATER BABIES A Children s Classic

Download or read book THE WATER BABIES A Children s Classic written by Charles Kingsley and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby is a children's novel by Charles Kingsley between 1862–63. It is written as part satire, satirising the events of the period. The book’s protagonist is Tom, a young chimney sweep, who falls into a river after encountering an upper-class girl named Ellie and being chased out of her house. There he appears to drown and is transformed into a "water-baby", as he is told by a caddisfly—an insect that sheds its skin—and begins his moral education. Tom embarks on a series of adventures and lessons, and enjoys the community of other water-babies on Saint Brendan's Island once he proves himself a moral creature. The major spiritual leaders in his new world are the fairies Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby (a reference to the Golden Rule), Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid, and Mother Carey. Weekly, Tom is allowed the company of Ellie, who eventually becomes a water-baby as well. Grimes, his old master, drowns as well, and in his final adventure, Tom travels to the end of the world to attempt to help the man where he is being punished for his misdeeds. Tom helps Grimes to find repentance, and Grimes will be given a second chance if he can successfully perform a final penance. By proving his willingness to do things he does not like, if they are the right things to do, Tom earns himself a return to human form, and becomes "a great man of science" who "can plan railways, design steam-engines, electric telegraphs, rifled guns, and so forth". He and Ellie are united, although the book states (perhaps jokingly) that they never marry, claiming that in fairy tales, no one beneath the rank of prince and princess ever marries. The book ends with the caveat that it is only a fairy tale, and the reader is to believe none of it, "even if it is true." Initially published in serial form Macmillan's Magazine, it was first published in its entirety in 1863. The story is thematically concerned with Christian redemption, though Kingsley also uses the book to argue that England treats its poor badly, and to question child labour, among other themes. ================ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Water Babies, fairy tale, land babies, childrens novel, childrens stories, Charles kingsley, satire, magical, enchanting, adventure, underwater, under sea, dragonfly, Land Babies, Water-Babies, Down To The Sea, Fairies, Tom, St. Brandans Isle, Leap Frog, Jump, Little White Lady, Give Chase, Lizards, Bathe, Old Dame, Cool, Clear Water, Pterodactyles, Cramchild, Queen, Learn, Old Salmon, Wicked, Old Otter, Coasting, Point Of Rock, Champagne, Swam, Buoy, Terns, Lazy Sunfish, Distinguished, Lobster, Professor, Ptthmllnsprts, Wise Man, Leap Frog, Town Clerk, White Sand, Inshore, Fishes, Nursery Maid, Nasty Old Monk, Ellie, Surprise, Warm Springs, Light Summer, Flapdoodle Tree, Eft, Pond, Beasts of the Sea, Grand Old Lady, Quakeress, Good Crow, Water Dog, Jellyfish, Mackerel, Epimetheus, Pandora, Old Mother Shipton, Great Sea serpent, Philosophers, Gotham, Spectacles, Poor Turnip Sun, Mr. Grimes, Bandage, Black Cedars, folklore, fantasy, waterfall, Caddisfly. education, Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby, Golden Rule, Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid, Mother Carey,

Of these Fairy Tales told to children in the Australian bush, “The Magic Gun” and “The Underground River,” are original, but the others have been brought from the old country i.e. Great Britain. Download or read book Essentials of Shinto written by Stuart Picken and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1994-11-22 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shinto is finally receiving the attention it deserves as a fundamental component of Japanese culture. Nevertheless, it remains a remarkably complex and elusive phenomenon to which Western categories of religion do not readily apply. A knowledge of Shinto can only proceed from a basic understanding of Japanese shrines and civilization, for it is closely intermingled with the Japanese way of life and continues to be a vital natural religion. This book is a convenient guide to Shinto thought. As a reference work, the volume does not offer a detailed critical study of all aspects of Shinto. Instead, it overviews the essential teachings of Shinto and provides the necessary cultural and historical context for understanding Shinto as a dynamic force in Japanese civilization. The book begins with an historical overview of Shinto, followed by a discussion of Japanese myths. The volume then discusses the role of shrines, which are central to Shinto rituals. Other portions of the book discuss the various Shinto sects and the evolution of Shinto from the Heian period to the present. Because Japanese terms are central to Shinto, the work includes a glossary.
