Download or read book Mysteries of Borobudur Discover Indonesia written by John Miksic and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-22 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With vivid photography and insightful commentary, this travel pictorial shines a light on the Buddhist art and architecture of Borobudur. The glorious ninth–century Buddhist stupa of Borobudur—the largest Buddhist monument in the world—stands in the midst of the lush Kedu Plain of Central Java in Indonesia, where it is visited annually by over a million people. Borobudur contains more than a thousand exquisitely carved relief panels extending along its many terraces for a total distance of more than a kilometer. These are arranged so as to take the visitor on a spiritual journey to enlightenment, and one ascends the monument past scenes depicting the world of desire, the life story of Buddha, and the heroic deeds of other enlightened beings—finally arriving at the great circular terraces at the top of the structure that symbolize the formless world of pure knowledge and perfection.

Chasing answers across Asia and Europe, her historical knowledge and love for her father persists as she tries to uncover some of the archipelago’s biggest hidden secrets while discovering a few familial skeletons of her own. Reader Reviews: "A well-written, a kind of Southeast Asian Da Vinci Code-type mystery … with a degree of scholarly detail all through the narrative." — Professor Rajeev S. Patke, director of the Division of Humanities at Yale-NUS College "The Java Enigma presents itself as a rather singular literary work for its boldness in putting Southeast Asian history at the fore, certainly able to spur new interest in readers that pick this book up." —bakchormeeboy "With so much colourful and eclectic history on Singapore's doorstep, I have often wondered why a code-cracking historical adventure hasn't been written about the region. Finally, The Java Enigma has plugged the gap. With a splash of Dan Brown and a quirky dash of Indiana Jones, Erni Salleh has written a globe-trotting, treasure-hunting thriller that is a fascinating read from start to finish.” —Neil Humphreys, bestselling author of Marina Bay Sins “A riveting read of archaeological and historical mystery. The Java Enigma takes you on a journey across Southeast Asia and into the hidden depths of the monuments, languages and cultures of the Old Malay World—all while unravelling the inherent interconnections in and among them, and in a way, among us all.” —Nuraliah Norasid, award-winning author of The Gatekeeper

Book Tourism Heritage and National Culture in Java

Download or read book Tourism Heritage and National Culture in Java written by Heidi Dahles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on anthropological fieldwork in the 1990s, this book provides an ethnographic perspective in its examination of the politics and policies of cultural tourism as they were played out under the Indonesian New Order regime. The successful New Order tourism policy ensured that tourism development both contributed to, and benefited from, increasing economic prosperity and a long stretch of political stability. However, that success has come at a price; the policy to encourage mainly 'high-quality' tourism revolved around carefully constructed and controlled tourist experiences that have led to local inequalities. The failure of this policy is analysed in a detailed case study of the city of Yogyakarta.

Book Bandit Saints of Java

    Book Details:
  • Author : George Quinn
  • Publisher : Monsoon Books
  • Release : 2019-01-01
  • ISBN : 1912049457
  • Pages : 355 pages

Download or read book Bandit Saints of Java written by George Quinn and published by Monsoon Books. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Java’s pilgrimage culture is a dense, batik-like pattern of contradictions: seriousness collides with laughter; curiosity with bewilderment; piety with scepticism; intense spirituality with, in some places, the joy of shopping. The pilgrimage culture on the island of Java in Indonesia – the world’s largest Muslim country – is a rebuke to the conservative orthodoxy that has been gaining ground in Indonesia’s religious landscape since the 1980s. In the rhetoric of this orthodoxy the “real” Islam is pure and exclusive. Piety comes from obedience to religious authority and its rules. Local pilgrimage is anything but pure and exclusive or rigidly authoritarian. It is powerfully Islamic but it fuses Islam with local history, the ancient power of place and a pastiche of devotional practices with roots deep in the pre-Islamic past. Quietly but tenaciously – just outside the great echo chamber of public space – it is growing as fast as the higher profile neo-orthodoxy. Bandit Saints of Java delves deep under the surface of modern Indonesia, exploring personalities and stories in the weird world of local pilgrimage, where Middle Eastern Islam wrestles with the ancient power of Javanese civilisation. It paints an astonishing portrait of Islam as it is practised today – largely invisible to journalists, scholars and tourists – by many of Java’s 130 million people.
