Book The Mycoplasmatales and the L phase of Bacteria

Download or read book The Mycoplasmatales and the L phase of Bacteria written by Leonard Hayflick and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of the book, The Mycoplasmatales and the L-phase of Bacteria by Leonard Hayflick, Ed. is presented. That organisms which lack cell walls are under intensive study is evident from the table of contents and the size of this book. The editor has drawn together 26 chapters by 35 contributors, mostly from the Second International Conference on the Biology of the Mycoplasmas held in 1966. Fifteen of the chapters are updated and expanded versions of papers published earlier in the 871-page proceedings of the 1966 conference (Biology of the Mycoplasmas, Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, vol. 143, 1967). The articles are well organized, clearly written, thoroughly referenced, and comprehensive. The book is not abundantly illustrated, but does contain sparkling photographs of mycoplasma organisms as viewed under the electron microscope. The book, covers topics which range from studies of ultrastructure to the epidemiology of Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Book Molecular Biology and Pathogenicity of Mycoplasmas

Download or read book Molecular Biology and Pathogenicity of Mycoplasmas written by Shmuel Razin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: was the result of the efforts of Robert Cleverdon. The rapidly developing discipline of molecular biology and the rapidly expanding knowledge of the PPLO were brought together at this meeting. In addition to the PPLO specialists, the conference invited Julius Marmur to compare PPLO DNA to DNA of other organisms; David Garfinkel, who was one of the first to develop computer models of metabolism; Cyrus Levinthal to talk about coding; and Henry Quastler to discuss information theory constraints on very small cells. The conference was an announcement of the role of PPLO in the fundamental understanding of molecular biology. Looking back 40-some years to the Connecticut meeting, it was a rather bold enterprise. The meeting was international and inter-disciplinary and began a series of important collaborations with influences resonating down to the present. If I may be allowed a personal remark, it was where I first met Shmuel Razin, who has been a leading figure in the emerging mycoplasma research and a good friend. This present volume is in some ways the fulfillment of the promise of that early meeting. It is an example of the collaborative work of scientists in building an understanding of fundamental aspects of biology.

Book Phytopathogenic Prokaryotes V2

Download or read book Phytopathogenic Prokaryotes V2 written by Mark Mount and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phytopathogenic Prokaryotes, Volume 2, provides an understanding of the diversity and complexity of diseases caused by these organisms. It is part of a two-volume treatise that summarizes current research on phytopathogenic prokaryotes. The book is organized into five parts. Part I describes the movement of pathogens from one host to another. The concepts to be presented are essential for understanding the epidemiology and, therefore, the control of diseases caused by prokaryotes. Parts II and III elaborate on the dynamic nature of host/parasite interaction. First to be presented are methods by which hosts may evolve to minimize damage caused by their pathogens. Second, the mechanisms for rapid genetic change available to the pathogen to counteract host defenses are discussed. Part IV emphasizes control of diseases caused by prokaryotes. Manipulation of plant-prokaryote interactions to break the disease cycle or minimize losses is discussed in regard to cultural practices, host breeding, biological control, and chemical control. Part V deals with cultivation and preservation of phytopathogenic prokaryotes.

Book Molecular Detection of Human Bacterial Pathogens

Download or read book Molecular Detection of Human Bacterial Pathogens written by Dongyou Liu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 1282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As more original molecular protocols and subsequent modifications are described in the literature, it has become difficult for those not directly involved in the development of these protocols to know which are most appropriate to adopt for accurate identification of bacterial pathogens. Molecular Detection of Human Bacterial Pathogens addresses this issue, with international scientists in respective bacterial pathogen research and diagnosis providing expert summaries on current diagnostic approaches for major human bacterial pathogens. Each chapter consists of a brief review on the classification, epidemiology, clinical features, and diagnosis of an important pathogenic bacterial genus, an outline of clinical sample collection and preparation procedures, a selection of representative stepwise molecular protocols, and a discussion on further research requirements relating to improved diagnosis. This book represents a reliable and convenient reference on molecular detection and identification of major human bacterial pathogens; an indispensable tool for upcoming and experienced medical, veterinary, and industrial laboratory scientists engaged in bacterial characterization; and an essential textbook for undergraduate and graduate students in microbiology.

Book Mycoplasma pneumoniae Clinical Manifestations Microbiology and Immunology

Download or read book Mycoplasma pneumoniae Clinical Manifestations Microbiology and Immunology written by Ran Nir-Paz and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mp) is a major human pathogen that causes both upper and lower respiratory infections, and is one of the leading causes of community acquired pneumonia (CAP), accounting for 11–15% of CAP throughout the world. Additionally it is known to induce an inflammatory process which depends on several mechanisms such as virulence of Mp (lipoproteins, community acquired respiratory distress syndrome (CARDS) toxin, oxidative products) and host defenses (cellular immunity and humoral immunity). Although it is a common pathogen, the pathogenesis for Mp infections is not yet fully understood. From the clinical point of view, since the pioneer studies in the 1960s and 1970s on the clinical presentation of Mp associated disease, the diagnostics approaches have changed dramatically leading to a better understanding of the clinical presentation and new issues have emerged - such as antibiotics resistance. The purpose of this Frontiers ebook is to thoroughly review and discuss the clinical presentation in view of the improved diagnostics, microbiological and immunological analysis of Mp infections, with focus on the history of Mp, clinical features of disease, bacterial structure of Mp and mechanism of gliding, clinical and laboratory diagnostics, the role of lipoproteins and Toll-like receptor, CARDS toxin, subtyping of Mp isolates and genome analysis, macrolide resistance and treatment.
