Book excerpt: WESTERN WRITERS OF AMERICA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE Champion cowboy Ben Smith is on trial for assault and battery, destruction of property, and intent to commit murder. His real troubles are just beginning. One of the last of the great American cowboys, Ben Smith is a three-time rodeo champion with one last chance to take a stand. Injured in a rodeo fall, he heads home at the age of forty to the Little Brawny Ranch, where he befriends the son of the Big Brawny’s owner. Ben agrees to show little Jimmy the ropes: the rigors of ranching, the rewards of hard work, and the awe-inspiring beauty of the wild mustang herds running free. But when they learn the horses are being rounded up—for the slaughterhouse—the rawhide cowboy and skinny greenhorn strike back, each in his own way, to save the mustangs. But there is the inevitable, violent, historic showdown. Ablaze with action, humanity, humor, and a noble cause, The Mustangers is Andrew J. Fenady at the top of his game. “Outstanding.” —Trail Dust Magazine on The Christmas Trespassers “If you want to escape into a western by a one-of-a-kind storyteller, here’s the perfect stocking-stuffer.” —Roundup Magazine

Book excerpt: “A fascinating narrative with all the grace and power embodied in the wild horses that once populated the Western range . . . [A] magnificently told saga.” —Albuquerque Journal A Los Angeles Times Best Nonfiction Book of the Year Mustang is the sweeping story of the wild horse in the culture, history, and popular imagination of the American West. It follows the wild horse across time, from its evolutionary origins on this continent to its return with the conquistadors, its bloody battles on the old frontier, its iconic status in Buffalo Bill shows and early westerns, and its plight today as it makes its last stand on the vanishing range. With the Bureau of Land Management proposing to euthanize thousands of horses and ever-encroaching development threatening the land, the mustang’s position has never been more perilous. But as Stillman reveals, the horses are still running wild despite all the obstacles, with spirit unbroken. Hailed by critics nationwide, Mustang is “brisk, smart, thorough, and surprising” (Atlantic Monthly). “Like the best nonfiction writers of our time (Jon Krakauer and Bruce Chatwin come to mind), Stillman’s prose is inviting, her voice authoritative and her vision imaginative and impressively broad.” —Los Angeles Times “Powerful . . . Stillman’s talent as a writer makes this impossible [to stop reading], to the mustang’s benefit.” —Orion “A circumspect writer passionate about her purpose can produce a significant gift for readers. Stillman’s wonderful chronicle of America’s mustangs is an excellent example.” —The Seattle Times

Book excerpt: Autry Braden with his partner Ed Talley aim to make their fortune and join the unscrupulous and murderous George Mason to hunt mustangs in 1804 Spanish Texas across the Sabine from Louisiana Territory. Their mission intersects with Maria Manuel, who is running from the vicious Juan Castenada, captain of the Spanish garrison at Nacogdoches, who has violated Maria and had Mason kill her husband so he could claim her as his wife. As Maria escapes Castenada's horrors, she takes refuge with the mustanging trio where Braden protects her from the vile Mason as they move west of Nacogdoches into the country of the Wichita and Lipan, who are enemies. The Wichita want to trade for Maria, but Mason realizes her value to Castenada, so he offers them half of their mustang haul when they return, but all of the animals will come out of Braden's and Talley's share. This creates animosity among the three men. When they reach the village of the Lipan, the chief's son wants Maria instead of trade goods. When her trade is refused, the warrior Galls challenges Braden to a fight for her. Braden wins but creates an enemy in Galls who must destroy Braden to win his honor back. After leaving the Lipan camp, the party moves into mustang country where they encounter the legendary golden stallion and his brood of 200 mares. They work weeks to acquaint the mustangs with their presence, build a pen to trap them in and trail brake them once they are captured. Braden captures the golden stallion and breaks it for the return to Louisiana Territory. In the interim, Castenada has decided to pursue the mustangers, take Maria and claim the mustangs for his own. The Spanish locate the mustangers but remain hidden to spring their trap closer to Nacogdoches to make it easier to claim their spoils. On the return trip toward the Sabine, all the interweaving animosities of the mustangers, the Spanish, the Lipans and the Wichita boil over in a variety of showdowns, some with expected outcomes and others with unforeseen resolutions.
