Book excerpt: This handbook is a sequel to CALL Publication 90-06, The Musicians of Mars: A Story of Synchronization for the Company/Team Commander, June 1990. This short story was written to emphasize critical synchronization tasks, combat leadership principles, and factors for consideration, primarily for company/team commanders but also for leaders throughout tactical-level units. The importance of integrating and synchronizing available combat power, both lethal and nonlethal, in the decisive action environment against potential hybrid threats is critical to unit success on the battlefield. Musicians of Mars II is written from the perspectives of two company/team commanders and the task force commander in a deliberate defense scenario against a fictional hybrid threat, based on current worldwide potential threats. It explores successes and shortcomings in the planning, preparation and execution of the defense, providing considerations and points of emphasis for tactical leaders.

This book was released on 2020-02-29 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2016, the Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) gave a contemporary update to the classic Musicians of Mars from June 1990. This was done in response to guidance from the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command that indicated the Army's brigade and battalion leaders needed a training aid for decisive operations. The updated work, released as Musicians of Mars II, was intended to facilitate the Army's return to the "blocking and tackling" of decisive action operations. With inputs from the combat training centers (CTCs) and the Maneuver Center of Excellence, Musicians of Mars II was an instant hit with leaders at the company and battalion levels. Responses from tactical audiences that read Musicians of Mars II indicated an appetite for a follow-on publication that emphasized offensive operations. This publication picks up with LTC Milner and TF Mustang addressing the question of "what next" following their successful defense in engagement area Blackjack.

Book Musicians of Mars II Handbook

Book excerpt: Musicians of Mars II is an update from the original 1990 publication, accounting for changes in today's environment and doctrine. It tells a story of synchronization from the maneuver team commander's perspective. There are no perfect solutions, but the intent is to get leaders to think throughout the range of possibilities and capabilities, coordinating assets and efforts throughout the battlefield to achieve victory. Although the story and characters are fictional, the successes and failures portrayed are applicable to units currently training and operating worldwide. The goal is for the reader to better understand synchronization and how to better prepare themselves, their units, and their Soldiers to become "Musicians of Mars." And in doing so, we "Win in a Complex World."

Book excerpt: Musicians of Mars III "The Cobra Strikes" picks up the tale of LTC Milner and Task Force Mustang in the aftermath of their successful defense (in CALL Handbook 16-12, Musicians of Mars II) of engagement area Blackjack. The responses to that publication from our tactical audiences was that there was appetite for a follow-on publication that emphasized offensive operations. This volume delivers. As with Musicians of Mars II, this handbook takes the reader through a fictional scenario where the tactical leaders make decisions, some good and some not so good, that impact subsequent actions. Musicians of Mars III will have its leaders learning and improving as they progress through tactical engagements. This was intentional in the development of this publication, and is designed to facilitate tactical discussions at the company and platoon levels.

Book excerpt: Electronic music is now ubiquitous, from mainstream pop hits to the furthest reaches of the avant garde. But how did we get here? In Mars by 1980, David Stubbs charts the evolution of synthesised tones, from the earliest mechanical experiments in the late nineteenth century, through the musique concrete of the Futurists and radical composers such as Pierre Schaeffer and Karl Stockhausen, to the gradual absorption of electronic instrumentation into the mainstream, be it through the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, grandiose prog rock or the DIY approach of electronica, house and techno.Stubbs tells a tale of mavericks and future dreamers, malfunctioning devices and sonic mayhem. But above all, he describes an essential story of authenticity: is this music? Mars by 1980 is the definitive account that answers this question.

Book Spider from Mars

Download or read book Spider from Mars written by Woody Woodmansey and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 2016, the unexpected death of David Bowie rocked the globe. For millions of people, he was an icon celebrated for his music, his film and theatrical roles, and his trendsetting influence on fashion and gender norms. But no one from her inner circle has told the story of how David Jones—a young folksinger, dancer, and aspiring mime—became one of the most influential artists of our time. Drummer Woody Woodmansey is the last surviving member of Bowie’s band The Spiders from Mars which helped launch his Ziggy Stardust persona and made David Bowie a sensation. In this first memoir to follow Bowie’s passing, Spider from Mars reveals what it was like to be at the white-hot center of a star’s self-creation. With never-before-told stories and never-before-seen photographs, Woodmansey offers details of the album sessions for The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and Aladdin Sane: the four albums that made Bowie a cult figure. And, as fame beckoned by eventually consumed Bowie, Woodmansey recalls the wild tours, eccentric characters, and rock ‘n’ roll excess that eventually drove the band apart. A vivid and unique evocation of a transformative musical era and the enigmatic, visionary musician at the center of it, with a foreword by legendary music producer Tony Visconti and an afterword from Def Leppard's Joe Elliot, Spider from Mars is for everyone who values David Bowie, by one of the people who knew him best. " ... those interested in rock history won’t want to miss this slice of music history." - Publishers Weekly

Situating Christian punk within the modern history of Christianity and the rapidly changing culture of spirituality and secularity, this book illustrates how Christian punk continues punk's autonomous and oppositional creative practices, but from within a typically traditional evangelical morality. Analyzing straight edge Christian abstinence and punk-friendly churches, this book also focuses on gender performance within a subculture dominated by young men in a time of contested gender roles and ideologies. Critically-minded and rich in ethnographic data and insider perspectives, Christian Punk will engage scholars of contemporary evangelicalism, religion and popular music, and punk and all its related subcultures.
