Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Museum Journal, Vol. 9: March, 1918 His number of the journal is devoted to the subject of American Art, the native production untouched by outside influences. The sense in which I use the term includes not only painting and sculpture and all the decorative arts but the art of story telling as well, which implies the literary gift. _it is Obvious that the pages of the journal do not afford scope for an extended critical treatment Of Indian Art with its varied parallel lines of development and their cross currents. -our purpose goes no farther than to illustrate some local phases of Sculpture, Painting, Applied Design and Story Telling. This reduces our task to the consideration of a few chosen examples from a rich and varied background. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Museum Journal, 1920, Vol. 11 We have long cherished a belief that a correct interpretation of Indian legend for readers of English could best be made by a native who, though familiar with our habits of thought and forms of expres sion, still felt stirring within' him the passionate appeal of his anoes tors. This mental equipment, combined with careful training in scientific methods of observation and record, constitute Mr. Shot ridge's chief qualification for introducing us to the unwritten literature of his people. Listening to an elder tribesman, he recorded this narrative in his native language and. Afterwards translated it into English, always searching for the forms that convey most faithfully the thought, and reproduce most accurately the style and character of the original idiom. The result is a faithful translation which preserves in some degree the epic character of the Tlingit narrative. Of the literary value of the document there is no need -to speak. At the beginning of 1918 the University Museum installed for a time a special exhibition of the art of the African Negro. Visitors to the Museum then' had an Opportunity of viewing some very interesting and remarkable, examples of sculpture made by tribes occupying the equatorial regions of Africa between the upper reaches of the Congo and Dahomey. A new exhibition is now announced. From the standpoint of the artist and the student of design as well as for the student of customs, African images present much matter for study, but to make them intelligible they should be examined in connection with the ideas of which they are the expres 'sion, and with an understanding of the ends they were made to serve. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus of Nazareth makes reference to one of the oldest beliefs in the ancient world—the malignity of an Evil Eye. The Holy Scriptures in their original languages contain no less than twenty-four references to the Evil Eye, although this is obscured by most modern Bible translations. John H. Elliott’s Beware the Evil Eye describes this belief and associated practices, its history, its voluminous appearances in ancient cultures, and the extensive research devoted to it over the centuries in order to unravel this enigma for readers who have never heard of the Evil Eye and its presence in the Bible. The four volumes cover the ancient world from Sumer to the Middle Ages.

Book The Museum Journal Vol 7

Download or read book The Museum Journal Vol 7 written by Pennsylvania University and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Museum Journal, Vol. 7: March, 1916 The sculptures in the exhibition begin with the Han Dynasty (206 B. C. - 25 A. Extend through the Wei Dynasty (386 - 549 A. The T'ang Dynasty (618 - 907 A. And come down to the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1643 A. This extension covers the rise, culmination and decline of sculpture in China, which had its golden age in the period of the T 'angs. The range of this sculpture extends all the way from the genre type of clay statuettes, reminding one of the Tanagra figurines, and taken from the tombs of the T'ang period, to heroic figures in stone representing Buddhist divinities. In using clay as a vehicle and shaping this soft material into forms of lifelike eloquence, . Combining an easy grace of line with great power Of, expression, the knowledge and ability shown are at times startling. Technical skill, combined with imaginative genius, Is seen 'in many fine examples made by masters of the T 'ang period. It is seen in the figure of a horse and in the larger than life seated statue of a disciple of Buddha, both in the same medium, clay. The last named'superb piece of plastic art Shows in a remarkable way how the: lump of. Clay under the master's touch becomes instinct with life and quick with spiritual and intellectual fire. Other sculptors of the same era, using hard stone as their medium, have handed down to posterity works that claim our greatest admiration and respect. Among the considerable number of stone sculptures in the Museum collection, which date from the Tang Dynasty, all of them on a very high plane of artistic and historic interest, there are at least Six statues that are very great masterpieces. Four of these are. Larger than life and two are under life size. All represent Buddhist conceptions of Divinity. They impress one at once with their latent qualities of immobile power and of energy in repose, qualities that seem to belong especially in the province of sculpture. These true impressions lose nothing on more intimate acquaintance. On the contrary they become associated with other qualities which combine to produce an effect of great dignity and power on the one hand and great refinement andcharm on the other. Book Beware the Evil Eye volume 2

Download or read book Beware the Evil Eye volume 2 written by John H Elliott and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Volume 2 of Beware the Evil Eye, John H. Elliott addresses the most extensive sources of Evil Eye belief in antiquity: the cultures of Greece and Rome. In this period, features of the belief found in Mesopotamian and Egyptian sources are expanded to the point where an Evil Eye belief complex becomes apparent. This complex of features associated with the Evil Eye - human eye as key organ of information, eye as active not passive, eye as channel of emotion and dispositions, especially envy, arising in the heart, possessors, victims, defensive strategies, and amulets - is essential to an understanding of the literary references to the Evil Eye. Elliott here illuminates the context for examining Evil Eye belief and practice in the Bible and the biblical communities.
