The sense in which I use the term includes not only painting and sculpture and all the decorative arts but the art of story telling as well, which implies the literary gift. _it is Obvious that the pages of the journal do not afford scope for an extended critical treatment Of Indian Art with its varied parallel lines of development and their cross currents. -our purpose goes no farther than to illustrate some local phases of Sculpture, Painting, Applied Design and Story Telling. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Museum Journal, 1920, Vol. 11 We have long cherished a belief that a correct interpretation of Indian legend for readers of English could best be made by a native who, though familiar with our habits of thought and forms of expres sion, still felt stirring within' him the passionate appeal of his anoes tors. This mental equipment, combined with careful training in scientific methods of observation and record, constitute Mr. Shot ridge's chief qualification for introducing us to the unwritten literature of his people. Listening to an elder tribesman, he recorded this narrative in his native language and. Afterwards translated it into English, always searching for the forms that convey most faithfully the thought, and reproduce most accurately the style and character of the original idiom. The result is a faithful translation which preserves in some degree the epic character of the Tlingit narrative. Of the literary value of the document there is no need -to speak. At the beginning of 1918 the University Museum installed for a time a special exhibition of the art of the African Negro. Visitors to the Museum then' had an Opportunity of viewing some very interesting and remarkable, examples of sculpture made by tribes occupying the equatorial regions of Africa between the upper reaches of the Congo and Dahomey. A new exhibition is now announced. From the standpoint of the artist and the student of design as well as for the student of customs, African images present much matter for study, but to make them intelligible they should be examined in connection with the ideas of which they are the expres 'sion, and with an understanding of the ends they were made to serve. Download or read book Records of the Indian Museum 1914 Vol 10 written by Indian Museum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Indian Museum, 1914, Vol. 10: A Journal of Indian Zoology Cephalothorax a little shorter than wide behind, strongly nar rowing forwards from the posterior corner, with convex lateral margins; the slightly convex front margin is only 5 of the length of the posterior margin. Two verv strong and deep transverse grooves, especially deep in the central part; the anterior groove about in the middle and straight, the posterior one at about the same distance from the anterior groove and the back margin, in the central part angularly curved backwards. The surface some what glossy, slightly but distinctly and regularly granulate. The hairs, most of them crowded along the front and the lateral margins, are truncate. Abdomen very robust and broad, somewhat broader than long, but very much contracted. The tergites are certainly divided by a longitudinal line, but this line is very indistinct, on account of the contracted abdomen; for the same reason the anterior sclerites are also placed somewhat angularly to each other (which is often the case in species belonging to the subgenus Chernes); the surface is glossy and distinctly shagreened; on each sclerite there is in the middle a darker spot; the hairs, situated along the posterior and the lateral margins, are partly truncate and partly (on the posterior somites) nearly pointed; on the last somite there are some longer tactile hairs. The sternites are still more indistinctly divided longitudinally, glossy and minutely shagreened, with numerous, long and pointed hairs along the posterior margins. Its slow drying is ascribed by Mr. Field to its bituminous nature. The experiment shows that moisture may be driven off from it by drying. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, Vol. 88: May, 1914, to October, 1914 She stood, not noticing anything, wait ing for instructions. With the courtesy which was the soul of him and the secret of his genius for inspiring others to do their utmost, the artist glanced at her and glanced at the members of the class, and tried to draw them together with a smile of sympathetic introduction. It was a wish to break the ice. For them it did break the ice; all responded to it with a smile or with other play of the features that meant gracious recognition. With her the ice remained unbroken: she with held all response to the humane overture. Either she may not have trusted herself to respond; or standing there merely as a model, she declined to establish any other understanding with them whatsoever. So that he went further in the kindness of his intention and said, a procedure alto gether unusual. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Art Journal 1866 Vol 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Art Journal 1866 Vol 5 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art-Journal, 1866, Vol. 5 Practical work is useful also for the constant comparison it forces us to make. The qualities of things are impressed upon us by nothing so strongly as by comparison. In merely looking at nature, we compare nothing, or at the best only one part of nature, with another part, but in working actively, we continually compare our bad work with Nature's exquisite work, and so become much more acutely alive to the infinite beauty of the latter. I believe that every reader who has drawn much will agree with me, that he knew nothing about the objects most familiar to him until he had drawn them. I have had a striking illustration of this in my own recent experience. Though long accustomed to a country life, and (in a very small way) an owner of horses and cows, I never knew anything accurately about these animals until two years ago, when I began to make studies of them with a view to painting. Indeed I may very truly say that until last year I had never beheld an OK or a cow artistically at all, and, being clearly aware of this, postponed writing a projected article on Rosa Bonheur from the humiliating conviction that although living summer and winter on a large French farm, and intimately familiar with all the oxen on it, and their labours, personally friendly with them even, and calling them by their names, I had not yet, in the deep critical and artistic sense, seen them.
