This book was released on 2015-11-21 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Makar's Dream and Other Stories; tr. from the Russian with an introd. by Marian Fell. Same stories and translator as the London Duckworth and Company edition of "The Murmuring Forest and Other Stories." Four stories by a living Russian writer. The introduction says: "The writings of Vladimir Korolenko have been likened to 'a fresh breeze blowing through the heavy air of a hospital.' The hospital is the pessimistic literature of the modern Russian intellectuals; the fresh breeze is the voice of the simple-hearted children of 'Mother Russia.'" The four stories are Makar's dream; The murmuring forest; In bad company; The day of atonement. Korolenko was born in Little Russia and spent a term of exile in Siberia; both these regions, with their wide, open spaces and far-spreading forests, have had their influence on his work. The heaven of Makar's Dream is a level Siberian plain. -The Athenaeum: Journal of Literature [1916] "True humor-the perception of the incongruity of things-is the element which distinguishes, above all others, the work of Korolenko. Four short stories, admirably translated by Marian Fell, constitute the first volume of his work to be published in English. He was repeatedly arrested for his advanced social doctrines, and was finally exiled for six years to eastern Siberia. Upon his release he published the story of 'Makar's Dream.' The second story, 'The murmuring forest,' is a masterpiece of descriptive narrative of whose beauty and power no synopsis could convey the least Idea. 'The day of atonement' is a delightful tale worthy of Boccaccio at his best." -Boston Transcript [1916] "Gorky's 'Confession' has neither the triteness of motive nor the touch of sentimentality that makes so popularly appealing Korolenko's pleas for social justice-'Makar's Dream' and 'In bad company': but it has a far larger canvas and a much wider range of thought than they." -Dial [1916] "In these we find originality of subject, a radiant style and lyric beauty, gripping charm and deep feeling, betraying the author's optimism and his sympathy with the 'eternally human,' and man's unquenchable desire for freedom and Justice. 'In bad company' is the most convincing story of all, in which he draws a clear picture of his own father. They give vivid glimpses of the daily routine and the outlook, mental and moral alike, of certain classes of the Russian peasantry." -NY Times [1916] "Vladimir Korolenko was born In Little Russia in 1853, of mixed Polish and Cossack stock. The hardships of his early years have given him a profound sympathy with the struggling Peasants. In 1895 he became editor of the magazine Russkoye Bogatsvo, and has continued in Journalistic work until he is to-day one of the greatest publicists in Russia." -Reviews of Reviews [1916] "To find a parallel in English to 'Makar's Dream' or 'The Day of Atonement' we should have to go back to our medieval writers, of the days when faith was simple and laughter was not divorced from religion." -The London Times [1916]
