Forty-year-old Betty Solomon uttered only six words before the call was disconnected. The operator alerted the police, but an error in communications led them to a wrong address. The Murder of Noreen Boyle A 12-year-old boy leans towards the microphone in the witness stand, his face perfectly composed under his youthful 1980s haircut. His sweater and collared shirt are neatly arranged. The courtroom and the entire town of Mansfield, Ohio are transfixed; this boy, Landry, is giving critical evidence in the murder trial of his mother, who was found dead, encased in concrete with a plastic bag over her head, under the basement floor of his father's new home. The Murder of Dan & Linda Broderick The sleeping Linda, wearing a sheer nightgown, was curled next to her husband of less than seven months, snuggling under an expensive colonial print bedspread. They were a remarkably attractive couple, in the prime of their lives . . . lives that would last just a few minutes more. A creaking floor or some other slight sound stirred Dan from his sleep, and when he moved, Linda opened her eyes, too. They saw the intruder simultaneously. Linda screamed, "Call the police!" The Murder of Mary Cheshire & Darrell Durbin In the early morning hours of October 30, 1988, residents of the Alhambra Trailer Park in Palatka heard a gunshot, a scream that lasted "just a few seconds," and another gunshot. One resident reported looking out his trailer and seeing nothing unusual. Another saw a bedroom light on in Darrell Durbin's trailer; also Durbin's front door was ajar. When daylight came, neighbors reported seeing that cars parked in front of Durbin's trailer had flat tires, because they had been slashed. These neighbors called the police and reported the suspicious events they had witnessed. When a deputy arrived, he received no response from inside the trailer and entered through an unlatched door. There, he found the nude bodies of a man and a woman, both of whom had been shot and killed. The victims were Mary Cheshire and Darrell Durbin.

A daughter of high society and one of Manhattan’s most sought-after debutantes, Emily Price married financier Edwin Post. It was a hopeful union that ended in scandalous divorce. But the trauma forced Emily Post to become her own person. After writing novels for fifteen years, Emily took on a different sort of project. When it debuted in 1922, Etiquette represented a fifty-year-old woman at her wisest–and a country at its wildest. Claridge addresses the secret of Etiquette’s tremendous success and gives us a panoramic view of the culture from which it took its shape, as its author meticulously updated her book twice a decade to keep it consistent with America’s constantly changing social landscape. Now, nearly fifty years after Emily Post’s death, we still feel her enormous influence on how we think Best Society should behave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes an afterword by the author In the Freud Archives tells the story of an unlikely encounter among three men: K. R. Eissler, the venerable doyen of psychoanalysis; Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, a flamboyant, restless forty-two-year-old Sanskrit scholar turned psychoanalyst turned virulent anti-Freudian; and Peter Swales, a mischievous thirty-five-year-old former assistant to the Rolling Stones and self-taught Freud scholar. At the center of their Oedipal drama are the Sigmund Freud Archives--founded, headed, and jealously guarded by Eissler--whose sealed treasure gleams and beckons to the community of Freud scholarship as if it were the Rhine gold. Janet Malcolm's fascinating book first appeared some twenty years ago, when it was immediately recognized as a rare and remarkable work of nonfiction. A story of infatuation and disappointment, betrayal and revenge, In the Freud Archives is essentially a comedy. But the powerful presence of Freud himself and the harsh bracing air of his ideas about unconscious life hover over the narrative and give it a tragic dimension.
