Book Global Goliaths

Download or read book Global Goliaths written by James R. Hines and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How multinationals contribute, or don't, to global prosperity Globalization and multinational corporations have long seemed partners in the enterprise of economic growth: globalization-led prosperity was the goal, and giant corporations spanning the globe would help achieve it. In recent years, however, the notion that all economies, both developed and developing, can prosper from globalization has been called into question by political figures and has fueled a populist backlash around the world against globalization and the corporations that made it possible. In an effort to elevate the sometimes contentious public debate over the conduct and operation of multinational corporations, this edited volume examines key questions about their role, both in their home countries and in the rest of the world where they do business. Is their multinational nature an essential driver of their profits? Do U.S. and European multinationals contribute to home country employment? Do multinational firms exploit foreign workers? How do multinationals influence foreign policy? How will the rise of the digital economy and digital trade in services affect multinationals? In addressing these and similar questions, the book also examines the role that multinational corporations play in the outcomes that policymakers care about most: economic growth, jobs, inequality, and tax fairness.

Book The Future of Business

Download or read book The Future of Business written by Max Ways and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-03-05 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Business: Global Issues in the 80s and 90s examines the future material, social, and intellectual vigor of business in the United States. The opportunities and problems facing business are analyzed, with emphasis on the basic forces and trends—both internal and external to business—that will largely shape it in the coming decades and their implications for society in general. This book is comprised of five chapters and begins with the argument that business corporations must be able to articulate a set of guiding principles that relate their conduct to the whole range of human aspirations, not just to material abundance or economic considerations alone. The next chapter predicts the future of business based on its international condition and its situation as it is affected by other parts of the societies in which it operates. The role played by business, especially multinational corporations, in the post-1945 expansion of international trade—referred to as ""the new imperialism""—is then discussed, along with the importance of business to government and vice versa; the implications for business of the change from fixed-age retirement to flexible-age retirement; and the future of business-government relations. The final chapter explores a number of economic issues, their implications for politics, the imperative of international cooperation, and the role of business in helping to solve them. This monograph will be of interest to businessmen, business leaders, consumers, employees, politicians, and the general public.

Download or read book The Global 1980s written by Jonathan Davis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global 1980s takes an international perspective on the upheaval across the world during the long 1980s (1979–1991) with the end of the Cold War, a move towards a free-market economic system, and the increasing connectedness of the world. The 1980s was a decade of unimaginable change. At its start, dictatorships across the world appeared stable, the state was still seen as having a role to play in ensuring people’s well-being, and the Cold War seemed set to continue long into the future. By the end of the decade, dictatorships had fallen, globalisation was on the march and the opening of the Berlin Wall paved the way for the end of the Cold War. Divided into four chronological parts, sixteen chapters on themes including domestic politics, the global spread of democracy, international relations and global concerns including AIDS, acid rain and nuclear war, explore how world-wide change was initiated both from above and below. The book covers such topics as ideological changes in the liberal democratic west and socialist east, protests against nuclear weapons and for democratic governance, global environmental worries, and the end of apartheid in South Africa. Offering an overview of a decade in transition, as the global order established after 1945 broke down and a new, globalised world order emerged, and supported by case studies from across the world, this truly global book is an essential resource for students and scholars of the long 1980s and the twentieth century more generally.

Book Marketing Aspects of International Business

Download or read book Marketing Aspects of International Business written by G.M. Hampton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The old ways break down, times change, and new life blossoms from the ruins. Frederich Schiller These words of a great poet express a basic fact of life-the inevitability of change. If marketers were asked to envision the future, they would not hesitate to answer that the entire globe is involved in a human revolution like no other in history. The changes now taking place, in both industrially developed and developing nations, are indications of the problems, chal lenges, and opportunities confronting future economic growth and development. Perhaps the most prominent characteristic of this change is the growing economic interdependence of all nations. Today it seems quite unnecessary to point out that any nation's problems and opportunities anywhere are now every nation's problems and opportunities everywhere. This economic and business interdependence on a global scale is the new reality, regardless of whether we want to accept it. The task ahead for all corporate managers becomes one of adapting to this new international business reality. It also requires them to assume the leadership role in helping individuals of all nations to become more and more aware of their mutual need for another's products and services. Today every corporation, whether confined within one nation or not, operates in this dynamic, changing, international business environment.

Download or read book The City of Musical Memory written by Lise A. Waxer and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for Popular Music Books (2002) Winner of the Society for Ethnomusicology's (SEM) Alan P. Merriam Prize (2003) Salsa is a popular dance music developed by Puerto Ricans in New York City during the 1960s and 70s, based on Afro-Cuban forms. By the 1980s, the Colombian metropolis of Cali emerged on the global stage as an important center for salsa consumption and performance. Despite their geographic distance from the Caribbean and from Hispanic Caribbean migrants in New York City, Caleños (people from Cali) claim unity with Cubans, Puerto Ricans and New York Latinos by virtue of their having adopted salsa as their own. The City of Musical Memory explores this local adoption of salsa and its Afro-Caribbean antecedents in relation to national and regional musical styles, shedding light on salsa's spread to other Latin American cities. Cali's case disputes the prevalent academic notion that live music is more "real" or "authentic" than its recorded versions, since in this city salsa recordings were until recently much more important than musicians themselves, and continued to be influential in the live scene. This book makes valuable contributions to ongoing discussions about the place of technology in music culture and the complex negotiations of local and transnational cultural identities.
