Book Theory of Multicomponent Fluids

Download or read book Theory of Multicomponent Fluids written by Donald A. Drew and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-10 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exposition of the derivation and use of equations of motion for two-phase flow. The approach taken derives the equations of motion using ensemble averaging, and compares them with those derived from control volume methods. Closure for dispersed flows is discussed, and some fundamental solutions are given. The work focuses on the fundamental aspects of two-phase flow, and is intended to give the reader a background for understanding the dynamics as well as a system of equations that can be used in predictions of the behavior of dispersed two-phase flows. The exposition in terms of ensemble averaging is new, and combining it with modern continuum mechanics concepts makes this book unique. Intended for engineering, mathematics and physics researchers and advanced graduate students working in the field.

Download or read book The Dynamics of Concepts written by Philip R.van Loocke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-01-28 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a model for concepts and their dynamics. A basic assumptionis that concepts are composed of specified components, which are representedby large binary patterns whose psychological meaning is governed by the interaction between conceptual modules and other functional modules. A recurrent connectionist model is developed in which some inputs are attracted faster than others by an attractor, where convergence times can beinterpreted as decision latencies. The learning rule proposed is extracted from psychological experiments. The rule has the property that that whena context becomes more familiar, the associations between the concepts of the context spontaneously evolve from loose associations to a more taxonomicorganization.

Book The Multi component Concept

Download or read book The Multi component Concept written by Thomas E. O'Donovan and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study accomplishes three things. First, it captures in a formal manner the experiences of the Army's first tri-component battalion, the 52nd Engineer Battalion. This ensures that the lessons learned, successes, challenges and overall results at the unit level for the period from tri-component reorganization in October 1999 to the present are recorded and available to planners, analysts, and leaders. Second, the study assesses the multi-component (MC) concept by extrapolating from the experience of the 52nd Engineer Battalion. The assessment is done in three approaches; against the stated goals of the MC concept, against a model for effective change within organizations, and finally using the Doctrine-Training-Leader development-Organization- Material-Soldier (DTLOMS) model for force management. The case study and the assessment form the basis for the third goal, a set of recommendations for the MC program, both in terms of the 52nd Engineer Battalion and the overall MC program. These study goals serve to show that the MC concept has tremendous potential to truly address some of the significant issues that have challenged AC/RC interaction for many years.

Book Grammars for Language and Genes

Download or read book Grammars for Language and Genes written by David Chiang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grammars are gaining importance in natural language processing and computational biology as a means of encoding theories and structuring algorithms. But one serious obstacle to applications of grammars is that formal language theory traditionally classifies grammars according to their weak generative capacity (what sets of strings they generate) and tends to ignore strong generative capacity (what sets of structural descriptions they generate) even though the latter is more relevant to applications. This book develops and demonstrates a framework for carrying out rigorous comparisons of grammar formalisms in terms of their usefulness for applications, focusing on three areas of application: statistical parsing, natural language translation, and biological sequence analysis. These results should pave the way for theoretical research to pursue results that are more directed towards applications, and for practical research to explore the use of advanced grammar formalisms more easily.

Book IUTAM Symposium on Variational Concepts with Applications to the Mechanics of Materials

Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Variational Concepts with Applications to the Mechanics of Materials written by Klaus Hackl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-02 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variational calculus has been the basis of a variety of powerful methods in the ?eld of mechanics of materials for a long time. Examples range from numerical schemes like the ?nite element method to the determination of effective material properties via homogenization and multiscale approaches. In recent years, however, a broad range of novel applications of variational concepts has been developed. This c- prises the modeling of the evolution of internal variables in inelastic materials as well as the initiation and development of material patterns and microstructures. The IUTAM Symposium on “Variational Concepts with Applications to the - chanics of Materials” took place at the Ruhr-University of Bochum, Germany, on September 22–26, 2008. The symposium was attended by 55 delegates from 10 countries. Altogether 31 lectures were presented. The objective of the symposium was to give an overview of the new dev- opments sketched above, to bring together leading experts in these ?elds, and to provide a forum for discussing recent advances and identifying open problems to work on in the future. The symposium focused on the developmentof new material models as well as the advancement of the corresponding computational techniques. Speci?c emphasis is put on the treatment of materials possessing an inherent - crostructure and thus exhibiting a behavior which fundamentally involves multiple scales. Among the topics addressed at the symposium were: 1. Energy-based modeling of material microstructures via envelopes of n- quasiconvex potentials and applications to plastic behavior and pha- transformations.

Book Asymmetric Domino Reactions

Download or read book Asymmetric Domino Reactions written by Helene Pellissier and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the latest developments in asymmetric domino reactions, focussing on those published in the last 6 years. These fascinating reactions have rapidly become one of the most current fields in organic chemistry, since they allow reaching easily high molecular complexity in an economically favourable way with advantages of savings in solvent, time, energy, and costs. Unsurprisingly, the high levels of efficiency and enantioselectivity generally reached in these reactions have been exploited for the production of a wide number of complex chiral molecules with dense stereochemistry and functionality, which are motifs present in biologically active compounds and natural products. The book is divided into three principal sections, dealing successively with asymmetric domino reactions based on the use of chiral auxiliaries, asymmetric domino reactions based on the use of chiral metal catalysts, and asymmetric domino reactions based on the use of chiral organocatalysts, covering the literature since the beginning of 2006.
