Download or read book Mourning Remains written by Isaias Rojas-Perez and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mourning Remains examines the attempts to find, recover, and identify the bodies of Peruvians who were disappeared during the 1980s and 1990s counterinsurgency campaign in Peru's central southern Andes. Isaias Rojas-Perez explores the lives and political engagement of elderly Quechua mothers as they attempt to mourn and seek recognition for their kin. Of the estimated 16,000 Peruvians disappeared during the conflict, only the bodies of 3,202 victims have been located, and only 1,833 identified. The rest remain unknown or unfound, scattered across the country and often shattered beyond recognition. Rojas-Perez examines how, in the face of the state's failure to account for their missing dead, the mothers rearrange senses of community, belonging, authority, and the human to bring the disappeared back into being through everyday practices of mourning and memorialization. Mourning Remains reveals how collective mourning becomes a political escape from the state's project of governing past death and how the dead can help secure the future of the body politic.

Download or read book The Mourning After written by John Ibson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the battlefields of World War II, with their fellow soldiers as the only shield between life and death, a generation of American men found themselves connecting with each other in new and profound ways. Back home after the war, however, these intimacies faced both scorn and vicious homophobia. The Mourning After makes sense of this cruel irony, telling the story of the unmeasured toll exacted upon generations of male friendships. John Ibson draws evidence from the contrasting views of male closeness depicted in WWII-era fiction by Gore Vidal and John Horne Burns, as well as from such wide-ranging sources as psychiatry texts, child development books, the memoirs of veterans’ children, and a slew of vernacular snapshots of happy male couples. In this sweeping reinterpretation of the postwar years, Ibson argues that a prolonged mourning for tenderness lost lay at the core of midcentury American masculinity, leaving far too many men with an unspoken ache that continued long after the fighting stopped, forever damaging their relationships with their wives, their children, and each other.
Download or read book From a Dark Place written by Lee Beck and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The killings began in May when the body of a young teacher was discovered in the bedroom of her historic Society Hill home of Philadelphia. The second victim was found seven days later. The number of victims grew incrementally during the uncomfortably wet and humid Spring and Summer. Each of the victims surgically mutilated by a madman possessing the skills of a surgeon. In a city renowned for its medical institutions and thousands of medically-trained professionals, one among them was a killer. For Captain Leo Gromski, of the Special Homicide Unit the pursuit of a phantom leads to the most shocking revelation a persistent investigator could conceptualize. The identity of the killer leads Gromski down the path to the Roach Motel of conspiracies: its tentacles stretching from Philadelphias City Hall to the United States State Department.

Download or read book Queering Acts of Mourning in the Aftermath of Argentina s Dictatorship written by Cecilia Sosa and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The aftermath of Argentina's last dictatorship (1976-1983) has traditionally been associated with narratives of suffering, which recall the loss of the 30,000 civilians infamously known as the "disappeared." When democracy was recovered, the unspoken rule was that only those related by blood to the missing were entiteld to ask for justice. This book both queries and queers this bloodline normativity. Drawing on queer theory and performance studies, it develops an alternative framework for understanding the affective transmission of trauma beyond traditional family settings. To do so, it introduces an archive of non-normative acts of mourning that runs across different generations. Through the analysis of a broad spectrum of performances--including interviews, memoirs, cooking sessions, films, jokes, theatrical productions and literature--the book shows how the experience of loss has not only produced a well-known imaginary of suffering but also new forms of collective pleasure"--Back cover.

Download or read book Aesthetics in Grief and Mourning written by Kathleen Marie Higgins and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A philosophical exploration of aesthetic experience during bereavement. In Aesthetics of Grief and Mourning, philosopher Kathleen Marie Higgins reflects on the ways that aesthetics aids people experiencing loss. Some practices related to bereavement, such as funerals, are scripted, but many others are recursive, improvisational, mundane—telling stories, listening to music, and reflecting on art or literature. Higgins shows how these grounding, aesthetic practices can ease the disorienting effects of loss, shedding new light on the importance of aesthetics for personal and communal flourishing.
