It is often hard for want to be actors and directors to get those "golden nuggets" about the craft unless you are lucky enough to get into those rehearsal rooms with the great artists. It is rare to find a book on acting and directing that gives practical notes that can immediately impact your work as an artist. Notes and tips that are short, direct, easy to interpret, and that can be implemented immediately into your craft. After twenty-three years working in the theatre, I have jotted down many of these gold nuggets learned through my personal conversations with some of the great western theatre artists who are no longer with us. Through this book, my work with them and their memories live on.

Book Practical Stage Directing for Amateurs a Handbook for Amateur Managers and Actors

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ... VII THE STAGE AND THE SCENERY The disadvantages under which most companies of amateurs give their performances are so many and so formidable, that one often wonders how they attain the success they often do attain. Improvised stages, ill designed and ill fitted costumes, inappropriate scenery, very bad lighting--against all these obstacles the amateur contends blithefully. Most frequently he simply ignores the obstacles; and perhaps this is a mercy, for if he realized his handicaps, he might not run at all. But the better way, one may venture to think, is frankly to recognize the difficulties of a mechanical sort in the way of the manager; to learn what are some of the really indispensable requirements in the matter of scenic investiture; and to try very hard, for the sake of the play, to live up to them. THE DIMENSIONS OF THE STAGE Most amateur plays are produced on far too small stages. Perhaps the old fashion of "private theatricals" in somebody's drawing room is responsible for the continuance of the habit of staging even pretentious plays, oftentimes, under conditions of space which are really impossible. There may be a dozen reasons for this convention; but there are a hundred better reasons for breaking with it at every opportunity. Schools which take their dramatics at all seriously ought to use the greatest care, in building new auditoriums with a stage, that the latter is something more than a platform suitable for a concert or an address. Unless plays are to be only/semi-successful as artistic productions, the actors must have plenty of room. On the small stages, too often deemed appropriate for non-professional players, there is quite lacking all opportunity for the free and slightly exaggerated movement so necessary for...

Book excerpt: Why does a director choose a particular script? What must they do in order to keep actors fresh and truthful through take after take of a single scene? How do you stage a shootout—involving more than one hundred extras and three colliding taxis—in the heart of New York’s diamond district? What does it take to keep the studio honchos happy? From the first rehearsal to the final screening, Making Movies is a master’s take, delivered with clarity, candor, and a wealth of anecdote. For in this book, Sidney Lumet, one of our most consistently acclaimed directors, gives us both a professional memoir and a definitive guide to the art, craft, and business of the motion picture. Drawing on forty years of experience on movies that range from Long Day’s Journey into Night to Network and The Verdict—and with such stars as Katharine Hepburn, Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, and Al Pacino—Lumet explains how painstaking labor and inspired split-second decisions can result in two hours of screen magic.

Download or read book Practical Stage Directing for Amateurs written by Emerson Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Stage Directing for Amateurs: A Handbook for Amateur Managers and Actors Demand - if one can so name that which is no more than an indefinite but insistent feeling - the actor has found that he has gained in every way. If amateur players aim as high as they can; if they work hard to give a performance which modestly asks to be judged by professional standards; if they try to get all the values possible out of the play; if, instead of merely reading lines, they make a real attempt - with what light they have - to impersonate character, we think there is a great gain all round. Not only is it more fun, but there is also a marked and permanent ad vance in accepted standards. Not only are rehearsals more interesting, when they are made the occasion of intelligent study, but they are a whole lot more amusing than those of the older type. Book True and False

Download or read book True and False written by David Mamet and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-09-07 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of our most brilliantly iconoclastic playwrights takes on the art of profession of acting with these words: invent nothing, deny nothing, speak up, stand up, stay out of school. Acting schools, “interpretation,” “sense memory,” “The Method”—David Mamet takes a jackhammer to the idols of contemporary acting, while revealing the true heroism and nobility of the craft. He shows actors how to undertake auditions and rehearsals, deal with agents and directors, engage audiences, and stay faithful to the script, while rejecting the temptations that seduce so many of their colleagues. Bracing in its clarity, exhilarating in its common sense, True and False is as shocking as it is practical, as witty as it is instructive, and as irreverent as it is inspiring.

The Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful film franchises in cinematic history. Winner of a record eleven Academy Awards--a clean sweep--and breaking box office records worldwide, the trilogy is a breathtaking cinematic achievement and beloved by fans everywhere. For Sean Astin, a Hollywood child (his mother is Patty Duke and stepfather is John Astin) who made his feature film debut at 13 in the 1980s classic The Goonies and played the title role in Rudy, the call from his agent about the role of Samwise Gamgee couldn't have come at a better time. His career was at a low point and choice roles were hard to come by. But his 18-month experience in New Zealand with director Peter Jackson and the cast and crew od The Lord of the Rings films would be more than simply a dream-come-true--it would prove to be the challenge of a lifetime. There and Back Again: An Actor's Tale is the complete memoir of Sean Astin, from his early days in Hollywood to the role that changed his life. Though much has been written about the making of the films, including the techniques and artistry employed to bring Tolkien's vision of life and the various relationships between castmembers, the real story of what took place on the set, the harrowing ordeals of the actors and the unspoken controversy and backstage dealings have never been told. Sean's experience and candid account of his time filming in New Zealand is unparalleled. More than a companion guide to the Ring films, There and Back Again filled with stories from the set and of the actors involved that have never been revealed before and is an eye-opening look from a Hollywood veteran at the blood, sweat and tears that went into the making of one of the most ambitious films of all time.

In 1982, James Lapine, at the beginning of his career as a playwright and director, met Stephen Sondheim, nineteen years his senior and already a legendary Broadway composer and lyricist. Shortly thereafter, the two decided to write a musical inspired by Georges Seurat’s nineteenth-century painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Through conversations between Lapine and Sondheim, as well as most of the production team, and with a treasure trove of personal photographs, sketches, script notes, and sheet music, the two Broadway icons lift the curtain on their beloved musical. Book You Can t Be Serious

Download or read book You Can t Be Serious written by Kal Penn and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kal Penn's unlikely career arc has taken him from nerdy American kid from an immigrant family in the New York suburb of Montclair, New Jersey, to world-famous actor, to White House staffer under President Obama, and back to actor again. Now, in You Can't Be Serious, he reflects on the most ridiculous, offensive, and rewarding moments that have stood out during his journey. With intelligence, humor, and charm on every page, Penn explores what it means to be the embodiment of the American Dream, as the child of immigrant parents who came to this country with very little, and who never expected to see their son get his big break by sliding off an oiled-up naked woman in a raunchy Ryan Reynolds movie. He also pulls back the curtain on racism in Hollywood and the constant reminders that he would never fit in. And of course, he reveals how, after twenty-five years fighting for success in Hollywood, he made the terrifying but rewarding decision to walk away from it all for a career in politics. Above all, You Can't Be Serious shows that everyone can have more than one life story. Penn bravely demonstrates by example that no matter who you are and where you come from, you have many more choices than those presented to you. It's a story about struggle, triumph, and learning how to keep your head up. And okay, yes, it's also about whether Kal really smoked weed in the White House with the former First Lady--because let's be honest, that's what you really want to know"--
