Book excerpt: Are you embarrassed by the Bible? The Bible is full of stories that make us uncomfortable: Israelites stoned adulterers, slaves were told to obey masters, Jesus declared that sinners go to hell, and God commanded His people to kill others, both young and the old alike. In response, many of us opt for a feel-good faith by embracing only the socially acceptable verses and passages. In Uncensored, Brian Cosby disrupts this deadly trajectory by explaining why all Scripture is God-breathed, holy, and essential to us as believers. And he invites you to quit hiding behind the fig leaf of half-truth and embrace a healthy, passionate faith.

Book Jesus and the Victory of God reissue

Download or read book Jesus and the Victory of God reissue written by N. T. Wright and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 1046 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly anticipated volume, N. T. Wright focuses directly on the historical Jesus: Who was he? What did he say? And what did he mean by it? Wright begins by showing how the questions posed by Albert Schweitzer a century ago remain central today. Then he sketches a profile of Jesus in terms of his prophetic praxis, his subversive stories, the symbols by which he reordered his world, and the answers he gave to the key questions that any world view must address. The examination of Jesus' aims and beliefs, argued on the basis of Jesus' actions and their accompanying riddles, is sure to stimulate heated response. Wright offers a provocative portrait of Jesus as Israel's Messiah who would share and bear the fate of the nation and would embody the long-promised return of Israel's God to Zion.

Book The Bible s Most Embarrassing Moments

Download or read book The Bible s Most Embarrassing Moments written by Paul Tice and published by Book Tree. This book was released on 1999-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work was originally published by the independent Bible Society of New York. This edition is an updated version with a new introduction by Paul Tice. The Bible is commonly referred to by many of us as "the good book." But do we really know what's in it when we so freely give it that title? It is a work which certainly has its good points, but why do we insist on glossing over and ignoring the things that would be considered bad or embarrassing? Lots of strange things happened in the Bible. If they made the Bible into a movie (in its entirety) it would be rated X. Would you want your kids to go see it? Read this book and then decide. We do not recommend this book to those under 18 because, even though it is the Bible, we might in fact be accused of selling pornography! It's unlikely that your local minister would use many of these passages in his sermons. If you're the kind of person who sees movies for the action scenes and always likes things happening then don't bore yourself with the rest of the Bible - just read this one. All the boring stuff was taken out. Just kick back and enjoy all the sex, bloodshed and murder you can stand - it's all in here and it's all yours for just a few measley bucks. Sure, it's embarrassing for a minister or the church itself to be confronted with these realities. There is good and bad in all of us, and the Bible is no exception. For those who take the Bible literally and wish to follow its example, we can only tell you that what is found within many of its pages docs not add up to a profound moral code. Look at the Spanish Inquisition and the Crusades, as two examples, and you will find they were not following a profound moral code at the time, butused the Bible as their guidepost in all of their brutal decisions. This book exposes many of the Bible's most shocking passages -- things you never imagined the "holy book" would contain. If you have read this back cover without being too offended, then chances are you will be intrigu

Download or read book Irresistible written by Andy Stanley and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at the earliest Christian movement reveals what made the new faith so compelling...and what we need to change today to make it so again. Once upon a time there was a version of the Christian faith that was practically irresistible. After all, what could be more so than the gospel that Jesus ushered in? Why, then, isn't it the same with Christianity today? Author and pastor Andy Stanley is deeply concerned with the present-day church and its future. He believes that many of the solutions to our issues can be found by investigating our roots. In Irresistible, Andy chronicles what made the early Jesus Movement so compelling, resilient, and irresistible by answering these questions: What did first-century Christians know that we don't—about God's Word, about their lives, about love? What did they do that we're not doing? What makes Christianity so resistible in today's culture? What needs to change in order to repeat the growth our faith had at its beginning? Many people who leave or disparage the faith cite reasons that have less to do with Jesus than with the conduct of his followers. It's time to hit pause and consider the faith modeled by our first-century brothers and sisters who had no official Bible, no status, and little chance of survival. It's time to embrace the version of faith that initiated—against all human odds—a chain of events resulting in the most significant and extensive cultural transformation the world has ever seen. This is a version of Christianity we must remember and re-embrace if we want to be salt and light in an increasingly savorless and dark world.

Book The Sequence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steven R. Bates
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2024-08-30
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book The Sequence written by Steven R. Bates and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes the best way to let one know what something is, is to let one know what it isn't. Today's typical academic book in eschatology provides the reader with a brief history of the various positions in the field followed by why certain positions should be considered the better options. This is not that book. Over the course of twelve chapters, six sequences will be presented from the three major sources in the New Testament regarding the subject, i.e., Paul's letters to the Thessalonians, the Olivet Discourse, and John's visions in Revelation. Through a careful reconciliation of those six sequences, Dr. Steven R. Bates will show that there's only one sequence of end-times, which he has labeled "The Post-Armageddon, Premillennial Resurrection." He asserts that had any other sequence of end-times been correct, whether pre-tribulationism, pre-wrath, mid-tribulationism, historic pre-millennialism, post-millennialism, a-millennialism, preterism, or any other sequence that one could possibly imagine, then the proponents of that postulation should be able to take the same six sequences from Scripture and reconcile them precisely with one another, sentence by sentence, and prove whatever sequence they propose. But, of course, no one will ever attempt such an endeavor because it's theoretically impossible. Scripture's six sequences only confirm one sequence, and it is the one which has been presented in The Sequence.

Book Man and Woman One in Christ

Download or read book Man and Woman One in Christ written by Philip Barton Payne and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does Paul teach a hierarchy of authority of man over woman, or does he teach the full equality of man and woman in the church and home? In Man and Woman, One in Christ, Philip Barton Payne answers this question and more, injecting crucial insights into the discussion of Paul’s view of women. Condensing over three decades of research on this topic, Payne’s rigorous exegetical analysis demonstrates the consistency of Paul’s message on this topic and its coherence with the rest of his theology. Payne’s exegetical examination of the Pauline corpus is thorough, exploring the influences on Paul, his practice as a church leader, and his teachings to various Christian communities. Paul’s theology, instruction, and practice consistently affirm the equal standing of men and women, with profound implications for the church today. Man and Woman, One in Christ is required reading for all who desire to understand the meaning of Paul’s statements regarding women and their relevance for Christian relationships and ministry today. This work has the potential of uniting the church on this contentious issue.

Evident in each chapter is Bruce's keen evangelical scholarship and pastoral insight.

Book Is the Bible Good for Women

Download or read book Is the Bible Good for Women written by Wendy Alsup and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the Bible actually say about women? This scripturally accurate book rejects harmful misinterpretations and reminds us of the dignity God places on His daughters, with a helpful guide for reflection and group discussion included. In the wake of the Me Too and Church Too movements, many of our loved ones are leaving the church or questioning Christianity because the Bible has at times been misused against them. How do we help our loved ones understand Scripture accurately? Apologetics for Women In this helpful look at God’s work of redemption from Creation to today, Wendy Alsup explores questions such as: • How does God view justice and equal rights for women? • What does it mean to be made in the image of God? • How have the centuries distorted our interpretation of how God views women? • How did Jesus approach the Old Testament and how does that help us read difficult passages today? • What is the difference between a modern view of feminism and the feminism that Scripture models? • How does the Bible explain the Bible to us? Using a Jesus-centered understanding to look at both God’s grand storyline and specific biblical passages, Alsup shows the noble ways God speaks to and about women in its pages. Most of all, she gives concrete tools for understanding Scripture to women who are questioning if the Bible is truly good for them.

Book The Parables of Jesus Explained

Download or read book The Parables of Jesus Explained written by Stephen Tvedten and published by TCK Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thoroughly researched and deeply insightful exploration of Jesus’ teachings from the Gospels. Over a third of the Gospels by Matthew, Mark, and Luke contain Jesus’ parables. In the Book of Matthew, we learn that this style of teaching fulfilled G-d’s prophecy: "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world." But how do we best interpret these vital lessons? The Parables of Jesus Explained offers a close reading of fifty two parables from the Bible. Author Stephen Tvedten explains that a parable is a word-picture which uses an earthly image or story to illustrate a spiritual truth or lesson. It creates a mini-drama that helps define the unknown and unseen by using both the visible and the known. This volume includes close readings of some of the best-known parables, such as The Parable of the Good Samaritan and The Parable of the Prodigal Son, as well as lesser-known stories, such as The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant.
