Book Witnessing Stalin s Justice

Download or read book Witnessing Stalin s Justice written by Kelly J. Evans and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witnessing Stalin's Justice brings together contemporary American reactions to the Moscow show trials and analyses them to understand their impact on US-Soviet relations. Held between 1936 and 1938, the show trials made false charges such as espionage, sabotage and counter-revolutionary plotting at the behest of the exiled Leon Trotsky to condemn the veteran Party leaders who had founded the Communist Party and led the Russian Revolution. Using eyewitness accounts by American diplomats and foreign correspondents for the American press as well as official US government sources, this book highlights the wildly different reactions seen from liberals, radicals, intellectuals and mainstream media. Evans and Welch show how fractures of opinion ran through every level of US society and divided political groups, especially between the American Communist party and other left-wing organisations. Covering the closed trials of the Soviet military, the Soviet anti-foreigner campaign and the Dewey Commission as well as the show trials themselves, Witnessing Stalin's Justice uncovers and brings together American reactions to the Soviet Union's Great Purge.

Book Moscow under Stalinist Rule 1931 34

Download or read book Moscow under Stalinist Rule 1931 34 written by Nobuo Shimotomai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The difficult years of Moscow in 1931-34 witnessed enormous social change in the city and the region. Industrialisation drive and collectivisation of agriculture resulted in unpredicted social upheavals on which new local leaders like Kaganovich, Khrushchev and Malenkov had to cope with. The book describes how such tasks as city planning, provisioning, supply, city transport, including the Metro, were dealt with. The book also considers the impact of this experience on the national level politics, and on the destalinisation campaign after 1953.

Book Britain Confronts the Stalin Revolution

Download or read book Britain Confronts the Stalin Revolution written by Gordon W. Morrell and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Russian politics, like opium, seems infallibly to provoke the most fantastic dreams and imaginings on the part of the people who study them.” — E.A. Walker, British Embassy, Moscow 1931 In March 1933 the economic section of the Soviet secret police arrested six British engineers employed by the Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Company. The arrests provoked a confrontation that brought Anglo-Soviet relations to the brink of disaster and resurrected the spectre of the show trials and purges of the technical intelligentsia that had shaken Soviet society from 1928 to 1931. Britain Confronts the Stalin Revolution is the first full-length study of the Metro-Vickers’ show trial of 1933. Based upon some new and many underutilized Soviet and British sources, Gordon Morrell examines the political, economic, social, legal and cultural dimensions of the only Stalinist political trial of the 1930s that directly engaged a foreign power. Morrell explores the roots of the crisis by analyzing Metro-Vickers’ role in the electrification of the USSR and he examines the political, economic and diplomatic relations between Britain and the Soviets that gave the crisis its international importance. He focusses on the efforts of the British Government to understand and respond to the new Stalinist order and, importantly, casts new light on the apparent role of the British Industrial Intelligence Centre during the early 1930s. Britain Confronts the Stalin Revolution is an accessible, original and multidimensional work that makes an important contribution to the study of Anglo-Soviet relations.

Why do people put their lives at risk to collect intelligence? How do intelligence services ensure that the agents they recruit do their bidding and don't betray them? What makes the perfect spy? Drawing on interviews with active and former British, American, Russian, European, and Asian intelligence officers and agents, Michael Smith creates a layered portrait of why spies spy, what motivates them, and what makes them effective. The accounts of actual spying extend from ancient history to the present, and from running agents inside the Islamic State and al-Qaeda to the recent Russian active measures campaigns and operations to influence votes in the UK, European Union, and United States, penetrating as far as Trump Tower if not the White House.
