Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mosaic Law in Modern Life And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. - exodus 20 1, 2. That grounds the law of God on the right of God. By it you are rid of arbitrariness. Here is no lightning out of a clear sky. Here is no loud voiced Despot saying, Thou shalt and Thou shalt not, by sheer force of might. The law of God issues from the right of God. The duty of man and the will of God are one fact seen from below and above. Seen as sometimes cloud is seen, dark and forbidding below, but surely sun lit and beautiful above. Book excerpt: Too many times, we read books, articles, or papers on Christianity, and we are left to wonder where the author is coming from or what his approach is for interpreting scripture. So right here, at the start, I would like to declare my method of interpretation and on which translation of the scripture I rest. First, I take the Word of God (scriptures) to be infallible, inerrant, and without contradiction. I believe that God said what he meant and meant what he said, and it is our task and responsibility to rightly divide the Word of truth. On all matters of life and spirit, the scripture is the final authority; in saying this, the scripture will be the primary source material for the whole of this paper. When speaking of the scripture, I am referring to the authorized version 1611. I believe this is the preserved Word of God for the English-speaking people. I realize this is another hotly debated topic, and we do not have the time or the space to debate it here, as this would be a distraction from the main topic. I will say though, outside of textual criticisms, biblical preservation, manuscript evidence, dynamic or formal equivalence translation, and a host other topics in this debate, it all comes down to thiswho is the final authority? We as Christians need to take a stand, we need to pick a version or translation that we believe is the Word of God and say, Thus saith the Word of God. If we do not, we set ourselves up as the final authority and not God; we dont like how one version says something, so we go to another and another until we find one that says what we want or that proves our point. This is not being transformed by the Word of God but making the Word of God conform to us and our biases. It is a matter of faith.

Book Daily Life through American History in Primary Documents 4 volumes

Download or read book Daily Life through American History in Primary Documents 4 volumes written by Randall M. Miller and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-12-12 with total page 1208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this book, students, teachers, and general readers get a most important look at primary documents—essentially history's "first draft"—revealing rare insights into how American life in past eras really was, and also about how professional historians begin their work. Daily Life through American History in Primary Documents presents a large sweep of American history through the voices of the American people themselves. This multivolume work explores the daily lives of American people from colonial times to the present through primary documents that include diaries, letters, memoirs, speeches, sermons, pamphlets, and all manner of public and private writings from "the people." The emphasis is on the variety of people's experiences as they ordered and lived their daily lives. The cast includes Americans of every class and condition, men and women, parents and children, free and "unfree," native-born and immigrant. Hundreds of images further illustrate American life as it developed over more than four centuries and as Americans moved across a continent. Organized both chronologically and topically, this collection invites many uses by students, teachers, librarians, and anyone wanting to discover what counted in American lives at any one time and over time. Its focus on primary documents encourages readers of the volume to explore specific and critical events by taking a firsthand look at the actual documents from which those events draw historical meaning. The documents show Americans at work, at home, at play, in the public square, in places of worship, and on the move. As such, they perfectly complement the acclaimed Greenwood Encyclopedia of Daily Life in America and will enrich any American history, social science, and sociology classroom.
