Book excerpt: From the pen of pastor Edgar Folk comes an attack late to the anti-Mormon scene (1900), but nonetheless significant for its fanning of opposition to Mormon politicians like B.H. Roberts and Reed Smoot. Praised by local Christian leaders as a model of scholarship, the author confuses portraits of LDS leaders W. Woodruff and J. Taylor. Still worth a serious read for insight on how Christians wrote about Mormons, the Monster Personified.

Book Race and the Making of the Mormon People

Download or read book Race and the Making of the Mormon People written by Max Perry Mueller and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth-century history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Max Perry Mueller argues, illuminates the role that religion played in forming the notion of three "original" American races—red, black, and white—for Mormons and others in the early American Republic. Recovering the voices of a handful of black and Native American Mormons who resolutely wrote themselves into the Mormon archive, Mueller threads together historical experience and Mormon scriptural interpretations. He finds that the Book of Mormon is key to understanding how early followers reflected but also departed from antebellum conceptions of race as biblically and biologically predetermined. Mormon theology and policy both challenged and reaffirmed the essentialist nature of the racialized American experience. The Book of Mormon presented its believers with a radical worldview, proclaiming that all schisms within the human family were anathematic to God's design. That said, church founders were not racial egalitarians. They promoted whiteness as an aspirational racial identity that nonwhites could achieve through conversion to Mormonism. Mueller also shows how, on a broader level, scripture and history may become mutually constituted. For the Mormons, that process shaped a religious movement in perpetual tension between its racialist and universalist impulses during an era before the concept of race was secularized.

Book The Angel and the Sorcerer

Download or read book The Angel and the Sorcerer written by Peter Levenda and published by Nicolas-Hays, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on Levenda’s research into Mormonism, Freemasonry, and esoteric societies over the past thirty years, this book is intended for an audience that is curious about Mormonism in light of the fact that at the beginning of 2012 there were two Mormons running for the GOP presidential nomination against two Roman Catholics. There has been much confusion in the media over various Mormon phenomena, such as the “magic underwear,” polygamy “Big Love” style, and much else. This book examines the beliefs and reveals the facts of Mormon ideas and practice, starting with its founder Joseph Smith Jr. who began his religious career with rituals of ceremonial magic and divination, and ended it with Freemasonry, the largest militia in the state of Illinois, a candidacy for US president, and assassination. Levenda also discussed the Mormons connection to Howard Hughes, Richard Nixon and Watergate as well as the role of Mormons in contemporary Presidential elections. This is the fascinating story of a purely American religion, its occult origins, and the rise of Mormons in American politics.

Book Mormons in America

Download or read book Mormons in America written by Claudia Lauper Bushman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-27 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mormonism is one of the world's fastest growing religions, doubling its membership every 15 years. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the formal denomination of the Mormon church) is now 10 million strong, with more than half of its membership coming from outside the United States. More than 88 million copies of The Book of Mormon have been printed, and it has been translated into more than 50 languages. Mormons in America tells the tumultuous story of this religious group, from its humble origins in small-town New York State in 1830 to its present heyday. Claudia and Richard Bushman introduce us to charismatic leaders like Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, go deep behind Mormon rites and traditions, take us along the adventurous trail of the Mormon pioneers into the West, evoke the momentous erection of Salt Lake City in the desert, and draw us into the dozens of skirmishes, verbal attacks, and court battles between Mormons and their neighbors, other religions, the media, and the American government. Religion in American Life explores the evolution, character, and dynamic of organized religion in America from 1500 to the present day. Written by distinguished historians of religion, these books weave together the varying stories that compose the religious fabric of the United States, from Puritanism to alternative religious practices. Primary source material coupled with handsome illustrations and lucid text make these books essential in any exploration of America's diverse nature. Each book includes a chronology, suggestions for further reading, and an index.

Book Secrets Mormons Don t Want You to Know

Download or read book Secrets Mormons Don t Want You to Know written by Richard Benson and published by Chick Publications. This book was released on 2011 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Christians only see the "public" face of Mormonism, thanks to their persuasive PR campaigns: clean-faced young people, parents committed to family values, and spectacular temples. But what do Mormons really believe? In this revealing book you'll learn their shocking doctrines, like: It's good to lie... to protect the church. There are millions of gods. God was once a man, and became a god. We can become gods, too. Jesus and Lucifer were spirit brothers. We all have an "Eternal Mother." God is a polygamist. The Jesus of the Bible was a polygamist. The Jesus of Christianity is NOT the Jesus of Mormonism. Sins are forgiven through good works. Salvation by faith in Jesus is "utter nonsense." Black people were cursed by God. A group of gods helped Jesus form the earth. Some sins require the shedding of your own blood. You'll also read the moving testimony of former Mormon, Cindy Benson. She reveals from personal experience the ugly, hidden side of Mormonism. She was only eleven years old when her 53-year-old father announced that a 15-year-old girl must become his second wife. Once you know what Mormons really believe, you will be better equipped to witness to them. Here is what Mormon leaders really taught their members, and what the Bible has to say about it. We believe this book will help you create burning questions "instead of a "burning in the bosom") for Mormons you know. And the Bible verses are right there to give you the answer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of A Midwife's Tale, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Bancroft Prize for History, and The Age of Homespun--a revelatory, nuanced, and deeply intimate look at the world of early Mormon women whose seemingly ordinary lives belied an astonishingly revolutionary spirit, drive, and determination. A stunning and sure-to-be controversial book that pieces together, through more than two dozen nineteenth-century diaries, letters, albums, minute-books, and quilts left by first-generation Latter-day Saints, or Mormons, the never-before-told story of the earliest days of the women of Mormon "plural marriage," whose right to vote in the state of Utah was given to them by a Mormon-dominated legislature as an outgrowth of polygamy in 1870, fifty years ahead of the vote nationally ratified by Congress, and who became political actors in spite of, or because of, their marital arrangements. Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, writing of this small group of Mormon women who've previously been seen as mere names and dates, has brilliantly reconstructed these textured, complex lives to give us a fulsome portrait of who these women were and of their "sex radicalism"--the idea that a woman should choose when and with whom to bear children.
