Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mormon Battalion: Its History and Achievements At this point Mr. Little seems to have taken up the matter personally and directly with the President, and under date of June lst addressed an Appeal to him. In it Mr Little expresses confidence in the President, else he would not have left his home to ask favors of him for his people (i. E., the Mormons). He gave an account of himself and his forefathers, who fought in the bat tles of the Revolution of his own character, vouched for by his letters of introduction from men of high standing; and then avers that the people he represents are of as high character as himself. I come to you, he said, fully believing that you will not suffer me to depart without rendering me some pecuniary assistance. Our brethren in the west are compelled to go [west]; and we in the eastern country are determined to go and live, and, if necessary, to suffer and die with them. Our determinations are fixed and cannot be changed. From twelve to fifteen thousand have already left Nauvoo for California, and many others are making ready to go. Some have gone around Cape Horn, and I trust before this time have landed at the Bay of San Francisco. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. On July 16, 1846 approximately 543 latter-day saints volunteered to enlist to aid the U.S. campaign against Mexico. This group of saints was known as the Mormon Battalion, and earned a place in the history of the West. During its 2,000 mile march its men cleared a wagon road from Santa Fe to San Diego and helped secure California as United States territory. Members of the Battalion helped preserve a feeble peace in southern California before the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended hostilities. They established a wagon road between the Gila and the Rio Grande, which influenced the U.S. government to make the Gadsden Purchase. They opened wagon roads that linked California with Salt Lake City via Carson and Cajon passes. A former member of the Battalion was arguably given credit for the discovery of gold in California, while others eventually participated in the gold rush and helped stimulate economic development in the Great Basin. These LDS former soldiers ultimately received favorable recognition both from their military commanders and from other non-Mormons for their industriousness and loyalty. And through it all, never fought a battle. This book is properly formatted for aesthetics and ease of reading. This book is great for teachers and students or for the casual reader. This book is the perfect addition to any classic literary library. At Latter-day Strengths we have taken the time and care into formatting this book to make it the best possible reading experience. Enjoy!

This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of the Mormon Battalion in the Mexican War, 1846-1847 After a lapse of thirty-six years from the time of the enlistment of the Mormon Battalion, no apology is required for publishing its history. Had its publication been undertaken at an earlier date, it might have been accomplished more satisfactorily to all concerned, as many important and interesting facts and incidents have doubtless been buried with the departed veterans. However, the most sanguine expectations of the author have been realized in the data collected for compiling this history, consisting of diaries written during service and numerous letters and statements from surviving members of that valiant corps. Neither labor, pains nor expense has been spared in the effort to make this a just and authentic history. The author has not aimed at sensational effect, nor made any attempt at literary embellishment, but rather endeavored to offer a plain statement of facts and give due credit to all concerned. Should his efforts meet the approval of his intelligent readers, his highest ambition in the publication of this work will be attained.
