Download or read book The Morgan Horse and Register Vol 3 written by Joseph Battell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Morgan Horse and Register, Vol. 3: Containing the Names, Morgan Rating, Rule by Which Admitted, and in Case of Stallion Number of All Horses Registered Up to the Time Registrations Were Begun in Volume IV Some few mistakes have been corrected in the addenda and a few horses omitted from the body of the book may there be found. As the United States Government has undertaken the breeding of the Morgan horse on its farm, the U. S. Morgan Horse Farm, Weybridge, Vt., attention has again been directed to the Morgan family of horses and their many good qualities are being recognized. This has increased the demand for Morgans and more individuals are being registered. Most Fairs now have classes for Morgans. Through the efforts of the author in tracing out several branches of the Morgan family, among which are the American Stars, Copper bottoms and Tom Hals, the Morgan blood is found to be very extensively distributed. In fact many of our fastest trotters and pacers have a large percentage of Morgan blood and many of them are, or can be, registered. It will be seen that the rules now in force are slightly different from those given in Volume II. This is especially true of the second rule. The table of standard performers which was begun in Volume II. Pages 415-449, and which included horses whose names begin with the letter A, has not been continued in this volume for lack of space. This table is of interest, as it shows how extensively the Morgan blood is disseminated in speed lines. Most of the illustrations are half-tones made from photographs, and are true to life. A careful examination of these pictures will convince one of the many good qualities of the Morgan horse. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Stallion Register, Vol. 1: Including All Stallions Prominent in the Breeding of the American Roadster, Trotter and Pacer, From the Earliest Records to 1902 N compiling the first volume of The Morgan Horse and Register, we Obtained a large amount of information showing that a very large propor tion of the pedigrees of the more noted progenitors of the foundation stock of the American trotter and pacer, as recorded in Wallace's American Trotting Register, which was the usual accepted authority, were largely erroneous. That the pedigrees Of others, as Copperbottom, Pilot, St. Lawrence and indeed 'the whole contingent of Canadian Sires from which a very large number of the best American road horses, including many Of the fastest trotters and pacers, are in part descended, were not given at all. To correct this we began as early as 1884 to collect accurate information of this class Of Sires, with the intention at first of publishing it in an appendix to the Morgan Register, but it rapidly became too voluminous for such place, and before long it became evident that it would have to be published in a work by itself. To make the work more complete we have added pedigrees of all Sires of 2 30 trotters and 2 z 5 pacers to the year I903 have included also some Of the more noted English thoroughbred Sires, taken from the General Stud Book of England and a large number of thoroughbred and other horses from advertisements in files of American newspapers, and from other Sources. The rating Of Morgan blood for each stallion, SO far as known, is given immediately after the name of the animal. The present volume includes the first three letters of the alphabet, A, B, C, whilst in the Introduction has been added quite a number of valuable articles relating to the Horse, which have mostly been copied from files of different horse papers examined in the public libraries at Washington, D. C. These too, are arranged in order for easy reference, and we think will be found instructive and valuable by all interested in the horse, and his develop ment. From the Earliest Accounts to the Year 1831, Inclusive This hint about soundness may be worth attention, but for the rest, with the advantages this country already possesses, and so long as Horse-racing continues to be followed up with spirit by men of rank and opulence, there can be little to apprehend. To the principal Breeders, whose assistance has been so obligingly afforded, the Editor takes this Opportunity of returning his sincere and grateful acknowledgments, as well for past communications, as, in some instances, for the promise of an annual list for the future from themselves or their Stud-grooms, of all the foals they breed: this he most thankft accepts, as a means of facilitating any future publication, and by adopting in some degree the practice of the original Compiler (who never suffered a day to pass without adding or correcting) he hopes, should he live to publish another Volume, the under taking may prove less laborious, and the book itself be more perfect. To many others besides the Proprietors of Studs, he feels himself greatly indebted, and begs them to accept his sincere thanks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nimrod Abroad, Vol. 2 of 2 I one here alluded to. The contest lay be tween two American-bred horses, but of course of English blood, namely Ameri can Eclipse, and Sir Henry and was won, if my memory does not fail me, by Eclipse, after a succession of desperate struggles in three or four-mile heats. I was also favoured last year with a Copy of the New York Spirit of the Times, a weekly journal, devoted in great part to sporting, containing the pedigree, charac teristics, and performances of a mare called Black Maria, accompanied by a portrait of her. It appears that her sire was the above named Eclipse, and her dam a celebrated racer of her day, named Lady Lightfoot, who won nearly thirty races, the majority at four mile heats, and was never beaten but once, in her eleventh year, and then by Eclipse, over the Union course. She was also the dam of several other celebrated American racers - amongst them, Shark, by the said Eclipse, sold when in training to J. C. Craig, Esq., for dollars. The grandam of Black Maria was another pro digy as to stoutness, running on to her fourteenth year, when she was sold for 2500 dollars, the highest price ever before paid for an American-bred brood mare.
