Book Diseases of Fruit Crops Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of Fruit Crops Classic Reprint written by Harry Warren Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Fruit Crops It is a curious but logical fact that in spite of a rapidly increasing population and an increased demand for fruit, there has been a decided decrease in the number of deciduous fruit trees in the United States during the last thirty years. With this marked decrease in the number of trees, there has been only a slight decrease in total production, and it is probable that there has been an increase in fruit which actually reaches the ultimate consumer. It is evident that diseases and insects have eliminated millions of fruit trees and that those which remain have been made much more productive owing to the control of pests. This more efficient and more stable production in spite of the increase in the number Of parasites has been made possible mainly by the scientific development of plant protection. Efficient plant protection has been made possible only by a thorough knowledge of the nature and cause of the diseases of plants. Download or read book Fruit Blights and Diseases of Fruit Trees written by T. Kirk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit-Blights and Diseases of Fruit-Trees: Interim Report The climate of New Zealand is exceptionally favourable to the rapid increase and vigorous growth of insects and plants introduced from temperate countries. European insects and weeds, when intro duced, ourish with a vigour rarely exhibited in their native country, and increase with greater rapidity. But this is not all: under the new conditions induced by extensive cultivation the food-supply of many native pests has been increased to an unlimited extent, so that it is no matter for surprise that the grass - grub, lemon-tree-borer, and several species of scale, are found in ever-increasing numbers, and give good promise of excelling their imported allies in their powers of destruction. In former years fruit-cultivation was carried on under easier con dition: few insects had been introduced, and indigenous kinds had not discovered the more enticing food-supply afforded by introduced fruit-trees. All this is changed a tree is no sooner planted than it is in danger of being attacked, and requires to be frequently inspected 'in order that noxious insects and fungi may be destroyed on their first appearance. The intending fruit-grower should consider this risk before planting. Unless he determines beforehand that his trees shall be kept clean at any cost, his anticipations of profit will be dis appointed, and his orchards will be a source of infection for the whole country side. Book Diseases of Cultivated Plants and Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of Cultivated Plants and Trees Classic Reprint written by George Massee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Cultivated Plants and Trees There are many causes which favour the spread and increase of disease at the present day, which had no existence in bygone times, perhaps the most potent is that commonly known as 'rapid transit.' Undoubtedly a change of seed is good, but, as experience has proved, you never know what disease you are intro ducing, and in many instances it is impossible to detect anything wrong until too late. The facility with which seeds, tubers, and even living plants can now be sent to the uttermost parts of the earth is a source of great danger from the point of view of introducing new diseases, and unless something in the way of a quarantine is insisted upon in every country, it appears highly probable that in course of time those diseases, which assume the proportions of an epidemic, Will be equally abundant wherever the host-plant is cultivated. Where total prohibition is not considered necessary, quarantine, which has answered so well in the case of animal diseases, might with advantage be applied in the case of fruit-trees, etc. The trees should be planted in some suitable place, and be examined from time to time by some qualified person. After a season's growth they might be allowed to pass into the country, if free from disease. I am quite aware that some people will say this idea is not practicable, and further, such precautions are -not necessary. There is certainly nothing impracticable; it is quite as easy to plant a tree in one place as another. The cost of a tree that has been in quarantine for a season would certainly cost more than it would at the moment of landing, but on the one hand the purchaser would secure a tree free from disease, whereas on the other hand the tree might prove to be infected With some disease. The fact that the most destructive diseases attacking fruit-trees and other plants in Europe, also eventually appear in whatever part of the world such trees are cultivated, is absolute proof that the disease has been conveyed along with the plant. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Leaflets on Fungus Pests and Allied Diseases of Fruit Trees Unlike insect pests, which are for the most part more or less clearly understood, there is often a certain mystery in the public mind connected with fungi. Their strange form, sudden appear ance and devastating habits are not readily explainable. To the practical fruit grower painful familiarity with their presence soon robs fungus parasites of any mysterious charm, and, by force of circumstances, he is compelled to study them, if it be only their mode of attacking plants and the best methods of keeping them at bay. Whether, however, the origin and} habits are understood or not, it may not be inadvisable to point out at the commencement of this volume the main outlines of the life of any ordinary fungus. Book Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables

Download or read book Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables written by Dean Humboldt Rose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables: Apples, Pears, Quinces Some of the more important facts concerning fungi (molds) should be kept in mind in dealing with fungus diseases of fruits. An important characteristic of most fungi is that they produce minute bodies called spores, which are usually the most important means by which fungi reproduce themselves and are distributed. Being small and light, spores are easily carried by wind, rain, insects, and other agents. Spores of several kinds of fungi that attack fruits are quite common on the soil surface and on all plant parts above ground. Spores on the surface of a fruit, under favorable conditions, produce fine fungus threads that may enter the fruit and cause disease. Fungus spores lie inert until temperature and moisture condi tions are favorable for their germination. The fungus threads they produce may or may not enter the fruit through the unbroken skin, but they are always more likely to enter if skin breaks are present. Factors that favor the development of each disease in storage, in transit, or on the market are discussed under appropri ate headings.
