Download or read book The Collected Letters of St Teresa of Avila vol 2 1578 1582 written by Teresa of Avila and published by ICS Publications. This book was released on 2011-09-23 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains Letters from 1578 to 1582 Includes Biographical Sketches and Sources for the Biographical Sketches. This second and final volume of St. Teresa's correspondence begins with the year 1578, a most troubling time for Teresa. A keen observer of the reality around her as well as within, Teresa in these letters focuses light on many of the struggles in both the Carmelite order and the church of sixteenth-century Spain. She introduces us to major personalities who have left their mark on history. Through her letters historians gain a better knowledge of the chronology of events in Teresa's life and how she related to the diverse people she had dealings with. A number of everyday particulars that compilers and editors of those times considered unimportant are today prized. Her worries, her troubles and triumphs, her expressions of sadness and joy, are all present here. With a compelling spontaneity, these letters disclose a Teresa in a complex variety of circumstances. The extraordinary gifts of grace bestowed by God on this Spanish Madre fortified her for a demanding ministry of service which entailed heavy responsibilities and that drew her contemplative soul into a whirl of activities. Because of the limited means of travel and communication in the sixteenth century, the organization of a reform like hers, with its unavoidable business matters, had to be dealt with chiefly through correspondence, a chafing duty that became one of Teresa's greatest trials. She often repeated that letter-writing was her biggest burden, a wearisome task that cost her more than all the miserable roads and bad weather experienced on her journeys through Spain. With its endnotes, biographical sketches, and above all, fresh translation, this second volume of Teresa's Collected Letters opens again another door into the fascinating world of this saint, one of the greatest women history has known.

Download or read book The More I Owe You written by Michael Sledge and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2010-05-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the acclaimed memoir Mother and Son creates an intimate portrait of poet Elizabeth Bishop in this “sensitive and engrossing” debut novel (Publishers Weekly). “A portrait of the artist as a human—a woman of desire, contradiction, and need.” —A. M. Homes, author of The Mistress’s Daughter Artfully drawing from Elizabeth Bishop’s lifelong correspondences and biography, The More I Owe You explores the modernist poet’s intensely private world, including her life in Brazil and her relationship with her lover, the dazzling, aristocratic Lota de Macedo Soares. Despite their seemingly idyllic existence in Soares’s glass house in the jungle, Bishop’s lifelong battle with alcoholism rises to the surface. And as the sensuous landscape of Rio de Janeiro, the rhythms of the samba and the bossa nova, and the political turmoil of 1950’s Brazil envelop Bishop, she enters a world she never expected to inhabit . . . A vivid imagining of the tumultuous relationship between two brilliant and artistic women, The More I Owe You reveals Elizabeth Bishop to be a literary genius who lived in conflict with herself, both as a writer and as a woman. “Real–life poet Elizabeth Bishop is vividly and imaginatively portrayed in Sledge’s debut novel. . . . Strong and intoxicating.” —Booklist “A gorgeous meditation on enduring love, damage, and what it can be to be happy, for however brief a moment. Bravo, bravo, bravo.” —Stacey D’Erasmo, author of The Sky Below “A beautiful dream of a book. Sumptuously detailed, deeply felt, it is as if Sledge slipped back in time and walked every step with Elizabeth Bishop, breathed every breath with her.” —Alison Smith, author of Name All the Animals

Download or read book This Spot of Ground written by Carol B. Duncan and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Spot of Ground: Spiritual Baptists in Toronto represents the first detailed exploration of an African-Caribbean religion in the context of contemporary migration to Canada. Toronto is home to Canadas largest black population, a significant portion of which comprises Caribbean migrants and their descendants. This book shows how the development of the Spiritual Baptist religion in Canada has been shaped by the immigration experiences of church members, the large majority of whom are women, and it examines the ways in which religious experiences have mediated the members’ experiences of migration and everyday life in Canada. This Spot of Ground is based on a critical ethnography, with in-depth interviews and participant observations of church services and other ritual activities, including baptism and pilgrimage and field research in Trinidad that explores the transnational linkages with Spiritual Baptists there. The book addresses theoretical and methodological issues also, including the development of perspectives suitable for examining diasporic African religious and cultural expressions characterized by transnational migration, an emphasis on oral tradition as the repository of cultural history, and linguistic and cultural hybridity. This Spot of Ground contributes new information to the study of Caribbean religion and culture in the diaspora, providing a detailed examination of the significance of religion in the immigration process and identity and community formations of Caribbean people in Canada.
