Book Christian Settings in Shakespeare s Tragedies

Download or read book Christian Settings in Shakespeare s Tragedies written by D. Douglas Waters and published by Associated University Presse. This book was released on 1994 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battenhouse's Shakespearean tragedy: Its art and Christian premises, Irving Ribner's Patterns in Shakespearian tragedy, Virgil K. Whitaker's The mirror up to nature: The techniques of Shakespeare's tragedies, and Robert Grams Hunter's Shakespeare and the mystery of God's judgments. Waters questions, for example, Battenhouse's validity of Christian theological and didactic emphases on the old purgation theory of catharsis. His approach differs also from Northrop Frye's views on the tragedies in Northrop Frye on Shakespeare, an archetypal approach to representative plays including the tragedies.

Book The Drama of Complaint

    Book Details:
  • Author : Emily Shortslef
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2023-05-12
  • ISBN : 0192694774
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book The Drama of Complaint written by Emily Shortslef and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Drama of Complaint: Ethical Provocations in Shakespeare's Tragedy is the first book-length study of complaint in Shakespearean drama. Emily Shortslef makes two main arguments. One is that poetic forms of complaint—expressions of discontent and unhappiness—operate in and across the period's literary and nonliterary discourses as sites of thought about human flourishing, the subject of ethical inquiry. The other is that Shakespearean configurations of these ubiquitous forms in theatrical scenes of complaint model new ways of thinking about ethical subjectivity, or ways of desiring, acting, and living consonant with notions of the good life. The Drama of Complaint develops these interlocking arguments through five chapters that demonstrate the thinking materialized in and through five prolific forms of complaint (existential, judicial, spectral, female, and deathbed). Built around some of the most electrifying scenes in Shakespearean tragedy, each chapter is a case study that identifies and theorizes one of these forms of complaint; delineates a matrix of ethical thought that structures that form; and develops a new reading of a Shakespearean tragedy to which that form of complaint and those ethical questions are integral.

Book Thinking with Shakespeare

Download or read book Thinking with Shakespeare written by William Poole and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeares works do not embody any doctrine or set of beliefs, as his critics have long been tempted to suggest, but they do stage encounters with certain kinds of thinking ethical, political, epistemological, even metaphysical that still concern us nowadays. They can be shown to draw on ancient philosophies Platonism, Stoicism, Scepticism either directly or through medieval and continental Renaissance thought. Or their scenarios can be likened to those of other kinds of intellectual argument, such as legal or theological discourse. The essays collected in this volume demonstrate the value of thinking with Shakespeare, either as embodied in Shakespeares own creative programme or in our use of philosophical paradigms as an approach to his works. The contributors are Colin Burrow, Terence Cave, Gabriel Josipovoci, Charles Martindale, Stephen Medcalf, Subha Mukherji, A. D. Nuttall and N. K. Sugimura.
