Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: The Moon Rock by Arthur John Rees Excerpt: The voice of the clergyman intoned the last sad hope of humanity, the final prayer was said, and the mourners turned away, leaving Mrs. Turold to take her rest in a bleak Cornish churchyard among strangers, far from the place of her birth and kindred. The fact would not have troubled her if she had known. In life she had been a nonentity; in death she was not less. At least she could now mix with her betters without reproach, free (in the all-enveloping silence) from the fear of betraying her humble origin. Debrett's Peerage was unimportant in the grave; breaches of social etiquette passed unnoticed there; the wagging of malicious tongues was stopped by dust. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Her husband lingered at the grave-side after the others had departed. As he stood staring into the open grave, regardless of a lurking grave-digger waiting to fill it, he looked like a man whose part in the drama of life was Care. There was no hint of happiness in his long narrow face, dull sunken eyes, and bloodless compressed lips. His expression was not that of one unable to tear himself away from the last glimpse of a loved wife fallen from his arms into the clutch of Death. It was the gaze of one immersed in anxious thought. The mourners, who had just left the churchyard, awaited him by a rude stone cross near the entrance to the church. There were six—four men, a woman, and a girl. In the road close by stood the motor-car which had brought them to the churchyard in the wake of the hearse, glistening incongruously in the grey Cornish setting of moorland and sea....

Book Bob Dylan in the Big Apple

Download or read book Bob Dylan in the Big Apple written by K G Miles and published by McNidder & Grace. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A must have travel and music guide to Bob Dylan's favourite New York city haunts. Bob Dylan in the Big Apple will take you on a journey that Dylan took through the streets of New York in the early 1960s, looking at the locations, including the less trodden Dylan trails, the characters he befriended as well as revealing stories that formed the backdrop to his life and work. We follow in his early footsteps into the Cafe Wha? as well as, more recently, the Beacon Theatre. Along the way we take in fighting on Elizabeth Street, the 'crummy' hotel, the tavern 'on the corner of Armageddon Street' and the Tuscarora Indian Reservation and more. We also take the Rolling Tyre Walk as well as the Talkin' Washington Park Square picnic. With photographs and a map of the locations and wonderful stories this is a must for any Dylan enthusiast. 'K G Miles has captured the vibrant spirit of Bobby's Big Apple career as well as looking into the nooks and crannies of the people, places and scenes of NYC. As one who was privileged to be there in those halcyon days I could not be more pleased. It's a great read.' John Winn, singer, songwriter and old troubadour 'This is your travel guide through time and space to the favorite haunts of the most celebrated folkie on planet earth. There is something magical about walking in the footsteps of our musical heroes. Whether it's the Beatles in Liverpool, Leonard Cohen in Hydra or Bob Dylan in New York City, these pilgrimages can be vastly more rewarding than any planned vacation. Refreshingly non-academic, this book begins and ends at the Beacon Theatre, where Dylanophiles from around the world converge for a glimpse of the enigma that is Bob Dylan.' Kevin Odegard, musician, 'Blood on The Tracks'

Download or read book Van Halen written by John Scanlan and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2012-06-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Van Halen are known for classic songs like “Runnin’ with the Devil,” "Panama,” and “Jump,” but also for the drama surrounding the exits of its former members. While many have attempted to discover the secrets of Van Halen through an analysis of their musical role models, John Scanlan looks at deeper aesthetic and philosophical influences in Van Halen, a groundbreaking account of this extraordinary band. Following the band’s pursuit of the art of artlessness, Scanlan describes how they characterize what historian Kevin Starr terms “Zen California”—a state of mind and way of being that above all celebrates the now, and in rock and roll terms refers to the unregulated expenditure of energy and youthful exuberance destined to extinguish itself. Scanlan sheds light on key events and influences—the decaying of Hollywood in the 1970s; Ted Templeman’s work as a producer at Sunset Sound Studios; Top Jimmy, a blues rock singer who performed at the Zero Zero club; and the building of Eddie Van Halen’s Hollywood Hills studio in 1983—that show how 1970s California was the only time and place that Van Halen could have emerged. Along the way, Scanlan also explores the relationship between David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen, the climate of Southern California and its relation to a sense of cultural exuberance, the echoes of Beat aesthetics in David Lee Roth’s attitude to time, Eddie Van Halen’s bebop sensibility, and the real roots of the so-called “Brown” sound. An illuminating look at a classic rock group and the cultural moment in which they came of age, Van Halen is a book for fans of the band and the history of rock and roll.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “A riveting feat of science writing that recasts that most familiar of celestial objects into something eerily extraordinary, pivotal to our history, and awesome in the original sense of the word.”—Ed Yong, New York Times bestselling author of An Immense World A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice Many of us know that the Moon pulls on our oceans, driving the tides, but did you know that it smells like gunpowder? Or that it was essential to the development of science and religion? Acclaimed journalist Rebecca Boyle takes readers on a dazzling tour to reveal the intimate role that our 4.51-billion-year-old companion has played in our biological and cultural evolution. Our Moon’s gravity stabilized Earth’s orbit—and its climate. It drew nutrients to the surface of the primordial ocean, where they fostered the evolution of complex life. The Moon continues to influence animal migration and reproduction, plants’ movements, and, possibly, the flow of the very blood in our veins. While the Sun helped prehistoric hunters and gatherers mark daily time, early civilizations used the phases of the Moon to count months and years, allowing them to plan farther ahead. Mesopotamian priests recorded the Moon’s position in order to make predictions, and, in the process, created the earliest known empirical, scientific observations. In Our Moon, Boyle introduces us to ancient astronomers and major figures of the scientific revolution, including Johannes Kepler and his influential lunar science fiction. Our relationship to the Moon changed when Apollo astronauts landed on it in 1969, and it’s about to change again. As governments and billionaires aim to turn a profit from its resources, Rebecca Boyle shows us that the Moon belongs to everybody, and nobody at all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Day in the Moon Behind us the sun had set and night was coming on with a perfectly clear Sky. We were walking along a footpath among clumps of heath and furze. A herdsman was singing as he Slowly brought back his cattle to their Shed, and gradually as the night came on the thousand sounds Of Earth were hushed. One might have said that Nature was assuming a recollected Silence the better to prepare man to feel the charm of the heavens that were soon all studded with stars. And now, as the tints Of the landscape faded away, my childish imagination was full Of delight. The wide unbroken plain extended to the hori zon, which it seemed to touch, and I thought that the sea must present much the same appearance. Here and there the thickets of high-growing shrubs stood out in dark patches on the ground, and I imagined they were like great waves. The clumps of pines scattered here and there farther oh, black. Book Walking on the Moon

Download or read book Walking on the Moon written by Chris Campion and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambition brought the Police together. It also tore them apart – but not before they became the biggest band in the world and the first supergroup of the Eighties. In Walking on the Moon Chris Campion tells the full, uncensored story of their spectacular rise. Written with a fan’s eye for detail this no-holds-barred account follows the band from their early struggle to make a mark in the volatile late 70’s punk scene, through their emergence – masterminded with the help of legendary manager Miles Copeland III – as an international rock phenomenon. Walking on the Moon features for the first time the arduous touring and recording schedule that saw the band crack America, the unorthodox business strategies that catapulted them to the top, and the bouts of infighting that caused their early demise. Campion details the shock 2007 reunion that saw them re-emerge as a global touring spectacle after a 20-year hiatus from the music industry and explores how the band members’ conflicting personalities and the chaotic personal life of frontman Sting informed some of their biggest hits. Much more than simply an entertaining romp, the book offers insightful critical analysis of the broader factors that enabled the Police’s success, and reveals a band struggling to balance commercial ambition with a desire for artistic credibility. Walking on the Moon is an epic tale of Eighties rock and the role played within it by one of the biggest names in music: The Police.A former contributing editor to Dazed & Confused and Vice magazines, and a writer for the Observer, the Daily Telegraph and Bizarre, Chris Campion has reported on the world of popular culture for almost two decades.
