Download or read book The Last Man on the Moon written by Eugene Cernan and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Apollo 17 commander and NASA veteran, “an exciting, insider’s take on what it was like to become one of the first humans in space” (Publishers Weekly). Eugene Cernan was a unique American who came of age as an astronaut during the most exciting and dangerous decade of space flight. His career spanned the entire Gemini and Apollo programs, from being the first person to spacewalk all the way around our world to the moment when he left man’s last footprint on the moon as commander of Apollo 17. Between those two historic events lay more adventures than an ordinary person could imagine as Cernan repeatedly put his life, his family, and everything he held dear on the altar of an obsessive desire. Written with New York Times–bestselling author Don Davis, The Last Man on the Moon is the astronaut story never before told—about the fear, love, and sacrifice demanded of the few who dare to reach beyond the heavens. “Thrilling highlights . . . a book not just about space flight but also about the often-brutal competition that went on between the US and the Soviet Union.” —Washington Times “A fascinating book.” —Charlotte Observer

Book excerpt: Horatio Alger wrote wildly popular dime novels in the mid to late 1800s about poor boys making good. the theme was always the same; that through honesty, hard work, strong determination, and perseverance, the American Dream could be realized regardless of his beginnings in life. "Puttin' on Airs" is the author's own story of himself as a poor boy who made good against the odds, a story which could have been written by Horatio Alger. the author describes his life growing up in rural Louisiana as one often children of uneducated parents, under conditions of spirit crushing poverty. He escaped this life by joining the Navy at age 17. Within 5 years time he became an offi cer and aviator and went on to complete a 21 year Navy career. In time he obtained a university degree (with honors), the only member of his family to even attend college. Only 2 of the 10 children even graduated from high school, himself and a sister. "Join the Navy and see the world," the recruiting poster said, and see the world, he did. He has been on 6 continents and in over 40 countries. He was also on the front line of the Cold War from near its beginning to near its end, which included a year in Viet Nam as a helicopter pilot. As a helicopter pilot, he also helped retrieve the astronauts from the sea after their return to earth. with the same determination and grit that propelled him in his Navy career, he entered private business after retiring from the Navy, which has made him a wealthy man. This well written book should be an inspiration to anyone who enjoys a good rags to riches story.
Download or read book From Pole to Pole with a Few Stops Between written by Harry Hanlan and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-five years of bush type flying in some of the harshest conditions in the world have resulted in many memorable experiences that I would like to share. A lot of my early flying was done along the west coast of British Columbia and in the Canadian Arctic between Yellowknife and the northern coast. Flying a Single Otter on floats out of Norman Wells in the Northwest Territories added hundreds of hours of float time to my logbook. I also accumulated many hours on skis and large high flotation tires in the high Arctic Islands and northern Greenland. These stories and poems were written over many years while I was flying in the Canadian Arctic, the Antarctic, South America and in many other parts of the world. They are stories of adventure, humor and tragedy, tales of landings on grassy jungle strips, snow, glaciers, ice, rivers, lakes and some of the busiest airports in the world. These stories are not just about the flying, they involve the people I have flown with and flown for and many others who are part of the aviation industry. I have tried to avoid concentrating too much on the difficulties and dangers involved in this type of flying. While there was no shortage of adventures, there were also many beautiful and fun times that I hope I've done justice to.

Download or read book 7 best short stories by Stanley G Weinbaum written by Stanley G. Weinbaum and published by Tacet Books. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s, when Stanley G. Weinbaum began writing science fiction, the genre was considered immature, of little artistic value. The stories so far were full of adventures and heroism, but there was little commitment to the depth of the characters and the treatment of science in the narratives. Weinbaum has brought the exact opposite of this to the genre: his stories are rich in scientific content, his characters are realistic and women are not relegated to the role of hero objects. Critic August Nemo selected seven short stories from this author for you to enjoy the best of science fiction. This book contains: - A Martian Odyssey - The Adaptative Ultimate - Parasite Planet - Pygmalion's Spectacles - The Mad Moon - Redemption Cairn - The Lotus Eaters

Download or read book Vitaphone Films written by Roy Liebman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The headline of the Variety extra on October 27, 1926, proclaimed "Vitaphone1 Thrills L.A.!" Vitaphone, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. formed in association with Western Electric, was one of the major producers of talkies, even though its sound-on-disc technology barely lasted four years. The Vitaphone features and shorts that have survived intact, or that have been so carefully restored, preserve much of the show business history that might otherwise have been lost with the industry's fast-paced advances in movie making. This book is a catalogue of Vitaphone features and shorts. The first section lists the features and shorts by release number. The New York productions (1926-1940) are listed first, followed by the West Coast productions (1927-1970). For shorts, the following particulars, if known and if applicable, are given: title, alternate title(s), instrumental and vocal selections performed on screen, composer(s) and performers of instrumental and vocal selections, release date and synopsis of the film, names of major cast members and directors, set information if two or fewer sets were used, and the amount paid to early performers. For features, entries list release dates, genre, and major cast members. The section on performers includes only those who appeared in shorts, listing dates and places of birth when known.

Download or read book FALLING IN LOVE AT THE END OF THE ROAD written by Ronald John Vierling and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Most Unlikely Likely American Tale Appearances can be deceptive. First impressions can be misleading. People who might seem so different that they could never become a couple sometimes turn around and fall in love. Perhaps that’s part of what makes the world interesting. Falling in Love at the End of the Road is that kind of story. A young, unmarried Haitian woman, Isabel Jean, fleeing with her ten-year-old daughter as far away from the dangers of violent abuse as she can – all the way to Ely, Minnesota – crosses paths with a mature Caucasian widower, Samuel Woolf, who has lived in lonely isolation in his family’s lake house for two years following his beloved wife’s death. Initially drawn together by her financial and his emotional needs, as time passes, they discover their apparent ethnic differences are superficial; their psychological similarities are profound. However, be advised: while this tale might initially appear predictable and simple, it is, in fact, deceptively compelling and complex – as compelling as the heroine and hero’s evolving relationship and as complex as the surprising if terrifying climax. Isabel Ebony Jean and Samuel Singer Woolf may well be the most unlikely likely couple modern readers have ever had the experience of meeting. Joyce Davidsen M.Ed., University of Central Florida
Download or read book Nothing is Impossible written by Victor Miller and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battle is the severest test a man can be called upon to undergo; it can bring out the best in a man _ and the worst... The author of this book, Victor Miller, joined the Queen's Royal Regiment, at Guildford, upon the outbreak of the Second World War. He volunteered for the elite Glider Pilot Regiment upon its formation and passed, with above average marks, the RAF pilot training programme. From here, he was to take part in three of the most iconic airborne operations of the entire conflict. The invasion of Sicily, the Allies first attack in to Europe, where he was wounded and temporarily taken prisoner; Arnhem, where the 1st Airborne Division struck sixty-four miles behind enemy lines only to clash with two SS Armoured Panzer Divisions resulting in 80% losses in nine days; and the assault crossing of the Rhine, into Germany proper, with 'only' 30% losses. This remarkable story, jotted down shortly after each operation when the events were still vivid in the author's mind, is an astonishing record of skill, bravery, comradeship and resourcefulness which represents a fitting tribute to many fallen friends and colleagues. The book was published initially in 1994, before the author's death. This posthumous edition comes with brand new supplementary content, drawn together by the author's sons and family.
Download or read book Not Brave Enough written by Rick Butcher and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It was a moment of revelation for me. I was seventeen when I learned to fly, just a stupid kid, and if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have done it. I didn't necessarily regret it, in fact quite the opposite; I love to fly. I love everything about it. I just suddenly realized that I'm not inherently brave enough of a person to have put myself through all that I've endured while chasing the clouds. I was a kid so squarely risk averse that I demanded everyone get their money back after playing cards for pennies and nickels. I was a kid who was intimidated by the challenges involved with earning Boy Scout badges or the honor roll. If I had been offered a safe, effortless, and boring destiny, to never have to face the unknown, I would've taken it and probably never looked back."
