Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt and the Books of Moses: Or the Books of Moses; Illustrated by the Monuments of Egypt These researches derive special importance from the light which they cast upon the Old Testament records, especially upon the Mosaic history. An incidental, nu designed, but most valuable proof is thus drawn from witnesses that cannot lie, in favour of the trustworthiness of those records. Paintings, numerous and beautiful beyond conception, as fresh and perfect as if finished only yesterday. Exhibit before our eyes the truth of what the Hebrew lawgiver wrote, almost five thousand years ago. The authenticity of the documents of our faith thus rests, not on manuscripts and written records alone, but the hardest and most enduring substances in nature have added their unsuspecting testimony. It might have been thought that all that is worth saying on the subject had been said, and well said. This would be a mistake. Each year some fresh discovery modifies our conception of Egypt and its history, and it is not a rare event for a belief which no one ever thought of question ing to be destroyed by a single blow of the excavator's pick.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Past, Vol. 6: Being English Translations of the Ancient Monuments of Egypt and Western Asia With the present volume the New Series of the Records of the Past comes to an end. The public seems to prefer books about the ancient inscriptions of the Oriental world rather than translations of the inscriptions themselves, and it would therefore be un desirable to continue to publish them. The curiosity excited by the first attempts at the decipherment of the Egyptian and Assyrian texts appears now to be satisfied, and even students of the Old Testament are contented to allow questions which bear directly on Biblical history and interpretation to be settled by the small but enthusiastic body of workers in the fields of Egyptian and Assyrian research. Book excerpt: Written in the tradition of historians like Mary Beard and Stacy Schiff who find modern lessons in ancient history, this provocative narrative explores the lives of five remarkable pharaohs who ruled Egypt with absolute power, shining a new light on the country's 3,000-year empire and its meaning today. In a new era when democracies around the world are threatened or crumbling, best-selling author Kara Cooney turns to five ancient Egyptian pharaohs--Khufu, Senwosret III, Akenhaten, Ramses II, and Taharqa--to understand why many so often give up power to the few, and what it can mean for our future. As the first centralized political power on earth, the pharaohs and their process of divine kingship can tell us a lot about the world's politics, past and present. Every animal-headed god, every monumental temple, every pyramid, every tomb, offers extraordinary insight into a culture that combined deeply held religious beliefs with uniquely human schemes to justify a system in which one ruled over many. From Khufu, the man who built the Great Pyramid at Giza as testament to his authoritarian reign, and Taharqa, the last true pharaoh who worked to make Egypt great again, we discover a clear lens into understanding how power was earned, controlled, and manipulated in ancient times. And in mining the past, Cooney uncovers the reason why societies have so willingly chosen a dictator over democracy, time and time again.

Book Ancient Egypt the Light of the World

Download or read book Ancient Egypt the Light of the World written by Gerald Massey and published by Black Classic Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerald Massay was one of the first Egyptologists in modern times to realize that with the final eclipse of the incredibly old Land of Kam (a.k.a ancient Egypt), a light had been extinguished in world civilization. He was a man of protean interests and concerns - at once a poet, socialist, Shakespearean scholar, mythographer and Egyptologist. Part of his genius was the ability to look truth in the face and not flinch. Massey did in the cultural domain what modern paleontologists have done in the anthropological: pinpoint Africa as the crucible of humanity's story. In the first volume of Ancient Egypt, Massey was primarily concerned with elaborating how the first humans emergine in Africa created thought. What had been evident to him from the outset was that the myths, rituals and religions of ancient Egypt - or Old Kam - had preserved virtually intact a record of the psychomythic evolution of humanity. In the second volume, Massey examines the celestial phenomenon known as the Precession of the Equinoxes. He believed only by understanding this phenomenon was it possible to fathom Nile Valley history. He provides the reader with extensive detail on the interconnection of the two. The last half of the second volume is devoted to the Kamite sources of Christianity. Massey demonstrated the manner in which New Testament Christianity evolved directly out of the Osirian mysteries. Massey pioneered the effort the connect Old Kamite thought to its origin in Africa's antiquity. His conclusions, which are constantly being verified, showed that Kamite thought was the direct progenitor to the philosophy, metaphysics, religion and science that eventually shaped Western cvilization. -- from back cover.
