The people were also displeased because of the sub sidies imposed, to which they had long been strangers and were even inclined to pronounce his government tyrannic. In this posture of affairs, and probably in the year 1434, after March had been confined, and his estates seized, Sir Robert Graham, now delivered from his first imprisonment, and irritated by that disgrace, pwposed, in a meeting of the lords and chief men, that he would represent their grievances to the king, if they would support him. As he was elo quent, and versed in the laws, they wxlhngly assented. Accordingly, in the next parliament, or that held for the forfeiture of March in January 1435, Graham's violence led him to exceed his commission for he rose with an enraged countenance, and approaching the royal seat, laid his hand on the king, saying, I arrest you in the name of all the three estates of your realm, here assembled in parliament for, as your people have sworn to obey you, so are you constrained by an equal oath to govern by law, and not to wrong your subjects, but in °ustice to maintain and defend them. Then turning around, he exciaimed, Is it not thus as I say But the members, struck. With consternation at Graham's rashness, remained in profound silence and the king instantly ordered the audacious censor to prison, to which he was conveyed, after a severe sarcasm on the meanness of Spirit, shewn by those who had promised to sup ort him. Soon after Graham was ordered into banishment; and his possessions for. Feited to the king. We answer, That it is closely connected with all translations from classic authors. Those words, which have fallen into so much disgrace with ourselves, were so inter woven not only in the daily and familiar speech but in the most finished and elaborate writings of the antients, that the whole embroidery of their poetry must be picked out 51161 taken to pieces, it it becomes requisite to exclude them. Hence arises the difficulty of translating not only Aristophanes, of whom we have been speakinf, but Catullus, of whom we are about to speak. It is to litt e purpose to say that the senti ment may be transferred, and the language left behind. There is no sentiment without language, and if its language be' altered it is not the same sentunent. Words, therefore, not being independent of ideas, it is evident that a translation conducted on the principle of excluding certain words will leave the sentiment unconveyed, and all the coaxing and intreaties of the translator will not persuade it to migrate. Eve nation in the world has a stock of untranslatable words, but lthey embody the sentiments and peculiarities that are incident to that nation. This is what, we we talk about the enins of a lang e, which more than its moral abitudes swayings influencing its forms of speech. How much, then, must we lose of the distinct and appropriate character of a literature, when we are forbidden to translate its most common and received phraseology?
