Book excerpt: In spring of 1985, Dave Worrell, a police detective on Canada’s Sunshine Coast, received a call: a young female provincial ward reported that she had been sexually assualted by her school principal. Dave was no stranger to investigating allegations like these, but as he dove deeper into the suspect’s history, it soon became clear that Robert Olav Noyes’s actions were even more far-reaching and sinister than anyone could have imagined. The Noyes case is infamous in British Columbia not only for the nature of the crime, but for the number of victims and the length of time he had been perpetrating; although he was ultimately charged with nineteen counts of sexual assault, he admitted to assaulting over sixty, and investigators believe the true count is in the hundreds. But how did he go unseen for so long? With care and precision, Dave recounts the investigation, interviewing witnesses and gathering information, all as the small-town communities involved fall apart in the wake of Noyes’s arrest. He unfolds the story piece by piece, then takes it to court, providing firsthand experience and transcripts of the gruelling court sessions to prosecute Noyes. The Monster Within is a close look at the Noyes case written by the lead investigator himself, spanning from the nascent moments of the Noyes case to the aftermath of his sentence.

Download or read book The Monster Within Idea written by R. Thomas Riley and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monsters lurk in everyone: monsters of greed, of guilt, of the pleasure found in pain, of the pain found when pleasure dies. Carefully disguised, the monsters can sit down beside you or take up residence within you at the slightest twist of fate. Will you try to stop them? Will you want to? This collection of 19 stories from R. Thomas Riley deftly explores the monsters born of the human mind. “Attrition” offers a future prison system that frees only those who repent sincerely—but what can an inmate do if he finds that sincerity is not really the key? “Twin Thieves” and “Tautology” throw a devilish spin on relationships gone wrong, while “The Lesser Evil” twists the abuses of race and power into a gritty, noirish nightmare of the choices a man must make to protect a lesser man and a greater good. In “Touching God,” a young man's past catches up to him when worlds bleed into each other and the past crosses into present, bringing back the abuse he once escaped and the brother who wasn't so lucky. Sacrifice, selfishness, and the worst of good intentions: all combine in The Monster Within Idea. From vampires and aliens to hit women and Wild Bill Hickock, Riley gives a subtle psychological turn to dark science fiction and horror. Let the monsters walk the paths of your mind. The idea is already within.“With the eponymous story [ R. Thomas Riley ] manages to create, in just four short pages, what Stephen King tried to hard (and ultimately failed) to do with The Colorado Kid, an utterly captivating yet completely unsolvable mystery that doesn't resort to any cheap cop-outs. Concise, confident and bewildering as all holy f@#%, this is how to do it. A pure experience of paranoia and horror of the truest Lovecraftian sense, this bastard kicked my ass all the way to next Tuesday.”?— Anton Cancre (www.horrornews.net) “Creepy, visceral and evocative stories than make you grin while your skin puckers in goose bumps. They lead you to the edge of the precipice and then drop you over to a satisfying conclusion—be it a sudden crash at the end or the revelation of wings.”? —Jennifer Brozek—editor of The Edge of Propinquity “…You'll find yourself tearing through this book as if your life depended on it…”—?K.D. Payne (www.monsterlibrarian.com)“Riley is dark and disturbing. The Monster Within Idea pulled me into his horrific world and I loved every minute of it.”?—John Grover, author of Space Stations and Graveyards, A Beckoning of Shadows and the upcoming Angels, Ashes and Alchemy “The Monster Within Idea is a fun ride, dark, disturbing and well written. Riley started off strong and is only getting stronger. Highly recommended!”?—James A. Moore, author of Deeper and Cherry Hill “A natural storyteller with a concise voice, R. Thomas Riley truly entertains in this collection. Unsettling at times, truly compelling, Riley's moody & wild tales kick hard and crank the appetite for more.”?—Steven L. Shrewsbury, author of Hawg, Tormentor and Godforsaken “R. Thomas Riley is a rising star. When you see those zombie and vampires digging their way up from the grave, and you see that hand break the surface of the earth, the backdrop a tombstone, you see one on his way up--that's a guy named R. Thomas Riley.” — Robert W. Walker, Kindle Bestselling author of more than 40 novels, including the Instinct series and Edge series

Book The Unnameable Monster in Literature and Film

Download or read book The Unnameable Monster in Literature and Film written by Maria Beville and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book visits the 'Thing' in its various manifestations as an unnameable monster in literature and film, reinforcing the idea that the very essence of the monster is its excess and its indeterminacy. Tied primarily to the artistic modes of the gothic, science fiction, and horror, the unnameable monster retains a persistent presence in literary forms as a reminder of the sublime object that exceeds our worst fears. Beville examines various representations of this elusive monster and argues that we must looks at the monster, rather than through it, at ourselves. As such, this book responds to the obsessive manner in which the monsters of literature and culture are ‘managed’ in processes of classification and in claims that they serve a social function by embodying all that is horrible in the human imagination. The book primarily considers literature from the Romantic period to the present, and film that leans toward postmodernism. Incorporating disciplines such as cultural theory, film theory, literary criticism, and continental philosophy, it focuses on that most difficult but interesting quality of the monster, its unnameability, in order to transform and accelerate current readings of not only the monsters of literature and film, but also those that are the focus of contemporary theoretical discussion.

Book The Monster in the Machine

Download or read book The Monster in the Machine written by Zakiya Hanafi and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2000-10-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Monster in the Machine tracks the ways in which human beings were defined in contrast to supernatural and demonic creatures during the time of the Scientific Revolution. Zakiya Hanafi recreates scenes of Italian life and culture from the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth centuries to show how monsters were conceptualized at this particular locale and historical juncture—a period when the sacred was being supplanted by a secular, decidedly nonmagical way of looking at the world. Noting that the word “monster” is derived from the Latin for “omen” or “warning,” Hanafi explores the monster’s early identity as a portent or messenger from God. Although monsters have always been considered “whatever we are not,” they gradually were tranformed into mechanical devices when new discoveries in science and medicine revealed the mechanical nature of the human body. In analyzing the historical literature of monstrosity, magic, and museum collections, Hanafi uses contemporary theory and the philosophy of technology to illuminate the timeless significance of the monster theme. She elaborates the association between women and the monstrous in medical literature and sheds new light on the work of Vico—particularly his notion of the conatus—by relating it to Vico’s own health. By explicating obscure and fascinating texts from such disciplines as medicine and poetics, she invites the reader to the piazzas and pulpits of seventeenth-century Naples, where poets, courtiers, and Jesuit preachers used grotesque figures of speech to captivate audiences with their monstrous wit. Drawing from a variety of texts from medicine, moral philosophy, and poetics, Hanafi’s guided tour through this baroque museum of ideas will interest readers in comparative literature, Italian literature, history of ideas, history of science, art history, poetics, women’s studies, and philosophy.
