Download or read book External Possession written by Doris L. Payne and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1999-08-15 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: External Possession Constructions (EPCs) are found in nearly all parts of the world and across widely divergent language families. The data-rich papers in this first-ever volume on EPCs document their typological variability, explore diachronic reasons for variations, and investigate their functions and theoretical ramifications. EPCs code the possessor as a core grammatical relation of the verb and in a constituent separate from that which contains the possessed item. Though EPCs express possession, they do so without the necessary involvement of a possessive predicate such as “have” or “own”. In many cases, EPCs appear to “break the rules” about how many arguments a verb of a given valence can have. They thus constitute an important limiting case for evaluating theories of the relationship between verbal argument structure and syntactic clause structure. They also raise core questions about intersections among verbal valence, cognitive event construal, voice, and language processing.
Download or read book The Lost Tomb of Viracocha written by Maurice Cotterell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-02-20 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author of The Tutankhamun Prophecies decodes the spiritual mysteries hidden within the recently discovered Mochian pyramids in Sipan • Reveals that ancient Inca sun-kings possessed the same solar science as Lord Pacal of Mexico and Tutankhamun of Egypt • Solves the mystery of the ancient Inca legend concerning a white god who traveled through ancient Peru, healing the sick and restoring sight to the blind Inca mythology tells of a tall, white leader who wandered along the coast performing miracles, a man they called Viracocha Pachamac, which means "God of the World." Centuries later another great miracle worker, similar to the first, appeared and wandered the countryside, healing the sick and restoring sight to the blind. He, too, was named Viracocha. These accounts have long baffled scholars, as have the carvings left by the people of Tiahuanaco who preserved these legends. Now Maurice Cotterell, who cracked the codes hidden in both ancient Maya carvings and the treasures of Tutankhamun, unlocks the secrets concealed within the treasure-filled tombs of Viracocha Pachamac and Viracocha. His investigation of these tombs, held within the long-lost pyramids of Peru, proves that these two figures were not myth but actually existed 1,500 years ago. The two Viracocha sun-kings had much in common with Lord Pacal of Mexico and Tutankhamun of Egypt and, like them, left the secrets of a super solar science encoded in their treasures. This science reveals the intimate connection between the cycles of life and birth on Earth and solar activity such as sunspots. More important, it holds the key to reincarnation and human spiritual realization, with answers to the spiritual mysteries of life and death.
Download or read book What the Brain Tells the Muscles written by Sam A. Rosenfeld and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents the research of Dr. Edward V. Evarts and his colleagues in the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Mental Health. The research is leading to a deeper understanding of the brain mechanisms responsible for the control and integration of motor functions. Potential application of the research findings to relief of movement disorders-for example, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's chorea-is evident. Although such application must await further research and development, the kind of research described in this monograph represents the slow but steady accretion of knowledge that someday in the future will lead to a so-called breakthrough in the prevention and treatment of crippling illnesses.
Download or read book The Scientific American Book of Love Sex and the Brain written by Judith Horstman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who do we love? Who loves us? And why? Is love really a mystery, or can neuroscience offer some answers to these age-old questions? In her third enthralling book about the brain, Judith Horstman takes us on a lively tour of our most important sex and love organ and the whole smorgasbord of our many kinds of love-from the bonding of parent and child to the passion of erotic love, the affectionate love of companionship, the role of animals in our lives, and the love of God. Drawing on the latest neuroscience, she explores why and how we are born to love-how we're hardwired to crave the companionship of others, and how very badly things can go without love. Among the findings: parental love makes our brain bigger, sex and orgasm make it healthier, social isolation makes it miserable-and although the craving for romantic love can be described as an addiction, friendship may actually be the most important loving relationship of your life. Based on recent studies and articles culled from the prestigious Scientific American and Scientific American Mind magazines, The Scientific American Book of Love, Sex, and the Brain offers a fascinating look at how the brain controls our loving relationships, most intimate moments, and our deep and basic need for connection.

Download or read book Nine Gates written by Jane Lindskold and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As evocative and moving as Charles de Lint's Newford books, with the three-dimensional protagonists and enthralling action of Mercedes Lackey's fantasies, Nine Gates makes our world today as excitingly strange and unfamiliar as any fantasy realm . . .and transports readers to a wondrous magical world drawn from Chinese lore and legend. Brenda Morris has barely had time to become accustomed to the idea that she has some of the powers of the Rat, a member of the Chinese Zodiac; that her elderly, former child-star "aunt," Pearl, is the Dragon; and that the young African-American former soldier she trains beside is the Dog. Brenda has learned that our world is not the only world and that her not-quite-Chinese ancestors came from a magical place, the Lands of Smoke and Sacrifice, created thousands of years ago by the destruction of China's books and scholars during the time of the first Emperor. Now, generations later, the Lands are once again at war, and the magics of the Thirteen Orphans are desperately needed. A mission to capture those powers went disastrously wrong and now the Lands' Dragon, Tiger, Snake, and Monkey are trapped on Earth unless the Orphans can build the Nine Gates. To do that, they must first save the Four Guardians of the Land Between, who are under magical attack. Complicating things is the fact that Brenda has fallen hard for the handsome man who is the Tiger, much to the distress of the sensual young woman who is the Snake. Download or read book A Method for Recording and Analyzing EEGs and VERs from Rats Under Hyperbaric Conditions written by Steven H. Ferris and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is described for recording electroencephalograms (EEG) and visually evoked cortical responses (VERs) from rats during hyperbaric exposure. A reliable and durable chronic electrode implantation procedure is used in which miniature, self-tapping stainless steel screws serve a dual role as cortical electrodes and as anchors for a miniature connecting socket. Sample data are presented which were obtained from implanted rats during exposure to hyperbaric air. The techniques developed are well-suited for studying the neurophysiological effects of hyperbaric environments. (Author)
