Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Money We Need: A Short Primer on Money and Currency And yet the assertion that the United States grew rich during the war by making trade for the shoddy mills and the sutlers is quite as worthy of respect as many Of the arguments which are addressed to Con gress and the country by those who are in favor of the Silver dollar instead Of the gold' dollar, or Of bimetallism, which means the same thing as a Sin gle Silver standard, or Of paper dollars printed by the government in quantities to suit. Whatever is said here must not be considered as addressed person ally to all who believe that something radical ought to be done to reform our money system. A good many honest people have been deceived, and a good many intelligent people have been mystified, by the speculations of those for whose apparently studious pursuit of this subject they have respect. They have been led to believe, for example, that there is not enough gold in the world for the proper transac tion of the world's business; that gold has increased in value, become clearer, and that therefore it purchases more Of other products than it used to. There is a universal outcry about low prices, and sugges tions are made that if silver were used for money as well as gold, money would be cheaper and other products would be dearer. The idea has gained ground that money is something valuable in itself, something that men, especially bankers, pursue for its own sake, because they want to store it up. Therefore these greedy persons have devised meth ods, arts, tricks - all Of them dishonorable and tyran nical - by the practice Of which they may gather in the money-of the world and compel others who want it to pay enormously for it. Book The Production of Money

Download or read book The Production of Money written by Ann Pettifor and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is money, where does it come from, and who controls it? In this accessible, brilliantly argued book, leading political economist Ann Pettifor explains in straightforward terms history’s most misunderstood invention: the money system. Pettifor argues that democracies can, and indeed must, reclaim control over money production and restrain the out-of-control finance sector so that it serves the interests of society, as well as the needs of the ecosystem. The Production of Money examines and assesses popular alternative debates on, and innovations in, money, such as “green QE” and “helicopter money.” She sets out the possibility of linking the money in our pockets (or on our smartphones) to the improvements we want to see in the world around us.

Book A Primer on Money Banking and Gold Peter L Bernstein s Finance Classics

Download or read book A Primer on Money Banking and Gold Peter L Bernstein s Finance Classics written by Peter L. Bernstein and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the foremost financial writers of his generation, Peter Bernstein has the unique ability to synthesize intellectual history and economics with the theory and practice of investment management. Now, with classic titles such as Economist on Wall Street, A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold, and The Price of Prosperity—which have forewords by financial luminaries and new introductions by the author—you can enjoy some of the best of Bernstein in his earlier Wall Street days. With the proliferation of financial instruments, new areas of instability, and innovative capital market strategies, many economists and investors have lost sight of the fundamentals of the financial system—its strengths as well as its weaknesses. A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold takes you back to the beginning and sorts out all the pieces. Peter Bernstein skillfully addresses how and why commercial banks lend and invest, where money comes from, how it moves from hand to hand, and the critical role of interest rates. He explores the Federal Reserve System and the consequences of the Fed's actions on the overall economy. But this book is not just about the past. Bernstein's novel perspective on gold and the dollar is critical for today's decision makers, as he provides extensive views on the future of money, banking, and gold in the world economy. This illuminating story about the heart of our economic system is essential reading at a time when developments in finance are more important than ever.

Most of us devote 8-12 hours a day seeking to make money and worry about it, trying to determine how much we earn to spend or invest. But what is the underlying concept of money? Is it a piece of paper with pretty pictures that dictates its concept? Is it what the authorities describe? Or is it what you and I decide as a marketplace participant? How did people use money during the early BC era? Who used to control the supply of money within a country, and what forms of money were used? Did Egyptians used paper money to build the Pyramids? How did we evolve from gold coins to paper money? Was there a high volume of frauds when we evolved from paper money to plastic money (credit cards)? Did people find internet banking secure in the 1990s? And what in the world are cryptocurrencies? What is a financial market? Are stock markets the only form of financial market? What are bonds? How do banks trade currencies, and what's their role in the financial system? Are central banks and commercial banks the same type of institutions? Is having debt really an issue? Living in a world where money is a constant that one works for, it is important to become aware of what constitutes the participants that make up the financial system that governs money control.
