Book excerpt: This paper posits a notion of the value of an individual's human capital and the associated return on human capital. These concepts are examined using U.S. data on male earnings and financial asset returns. We decompose the value of human capital into a bond, a stock and a residual value component. We find that (1) the bond component of human capital is larger than the stock component at all ages, (2) the value of human capital is far below the value implied by discounting earnings at the risk-free rate, (3) mean human capital returns exceed stock returns early in life and decline with age and (4) human capital returns and stock returns have a small positive correlation over the working lifetime -- National Bureau of Economic Research web site.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money, like sex, has been essential to the rise and development of civilization. The first known writings were records of simple business transactions and later on money came to be used as a common denominator for all goods. Current dealings with money have become infinitely more complicated than at the beginning of recorded history but its basic meaning is the same, a medium underlying all goods and services, in which comparative values are measured and by which they are acquired. Certainly, money is a vital and essential part of our everyday life. It is hard, if not impossible, to conceive of any of us going through a single day's series of experiences without using it or one of its symbolic equivalents: checks, credit cards, letters of credit, IOU's, scrip, food stamps or what have you. Both of us have had a longstanding interest in money, in what it could and could not buy, in investing, spending and allocating. Our personal interest in money antedated our professional training and our career pathways for we were people first before we became people who were therapists.

Book Portfolio Selection and Asset Pricing

Download or read book Portfolio Selection and Asset Pricing written by Shouyang Wang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our daily life, almost every family owns a portfolio of assets. This portfolio could contain real assets such as a car, or a house, as well as financial assets such as stocks, bonds or futures. Portfolio theory deals with how to form a satisfied portfolio among an enormous number of assets. Originally proposed by H. Markowtiz in 1952, the mean-variance methodology for portfolio optimization has been central to the research activities in this area and has served as a basis for the development of modem financial theory during the past four decades. Follow-on work with this approach has born much fruit for this field of study. Among all those research fruits, the most important is the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) proposed by Sharpe in 1964. This model greatly simplifies the input for portfolio selection and makes the mean-variance methodology into a practical application. Consequently, lots of models were proposed to price the capital assets. In this book, some of the most important progresses in portfolio theory are surveyed and a few new models for portfolio selection are presented. Models for asset pricing are illustrated and the empirical tests of CAPM for China's stock markets are made. The first chapter surveys ideas and principles of modeling the investment decision process of economic agents. It starts with the Markowitz criteria of formulating return and risk as mean and variance and then looks into other related criteria which are based on probability assumptions on future prices of securities.

Book The Mind of A Rich Man

  • Author : Dan Bob
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018-09-25
  • ISBN : 9781724012555
  • Pages : 71 pages

Download or read book The Mind of A Rich Man written by Dan Bob and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting rich involves shedding middle class values; to get ahead, to get more value and to make more money. It involves playing your cards close to your chest, posing a front, hiding your true feelings, sometimes revealing them at the right moment; not showing anger during provocative situations; getting into the grey areas and getting murkier; reading between the lines of a deal and making use of possibilities within them; finding loopholes and exploiting them and many more. Middle class people are conditioned to believe in the most primitive forms of employment, as most of the human species evolved from hunting and later from farming traditions. The linear relationship between "work and reward" or "input and output" can be firmly and easily established in these primitive or ancient economic activities. The rich, however, see through the subjective, work on it and exploit it. The rich man sees beyond the visible, physical aspects of money and has an entirely different view of money. The rich people are able to see the non-linear relationship created through value addition and they exploit the value, which, at times, is subjective. On the contrary, the middle class are conditioned to believe only in the objective world or the world of appearances. The rich man does not engage in direct rendering of labor unless and until the task is of high value that will fetch him more value or money. He knows other ways that can make him a lot of money and has plenty of calculations going on in his head on how to bring himself more money. He trades value for money than labor. He is ahead of others in evolution. Rich people are also more evolved in their understanding of the non-linear aspects on how money works and how their brain should work to get more value. This book is designed to target the right areas in our brains to change the way we see the world, other people, money, business and finances. In order to target the right areas that cause changes, the book explains these concepts in a highly succinct manner. So, if you are ready, let's take a quick tour to change the way we see and think about money to move us in the right direction that will eventually help us live financially better lives and to get rich.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing well with money isn’t necessarily about what you know. It’s about how you behave. And behavior is hard to teach, even to really smart people. Money—investing, personal finance, and business decisions—is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money and teaches you how to make better sense of one of life’s most important topics.
