Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Money-Lender Unmasked The Author has endeavoured, in a popular style, to describe and expose the methods adopted by the majority of Money Lenders in the ordinary course of their business, and he believes it to be the first time that any attempt has been made to place the whole of the facts in a succinct form before the public. The history now told is the outcome of continuous observation and personal investigation, and the writer earnestly hopes that, as a sequel to the recital, every reader may regard it as a duty to exert himself in an endeavour to remove the evils herein brought to light. In a leading Journal it was recently remarked that the system of money lending had been so frequently ventilated and exposed, and had arrived at such a deplorable state, that nothing more could be said or done for it - it was simply irremediable in its baseness and hopeless in its condition. Whether this be so or not, the reader can judge for himself after he has perused the following facts and the author's tabulated suggestions. Book excerpt: Credit and Community examines the history of consumer credit and debt in working class communities. Concentrating on forms of credit that were traditionally very dependent on personal relationships and social networks, such as mail-order catalogues and co-operatives, it demonstrates how community-based arrangements declined as more impersonal forms of borrowing emerged during the twentieth century. Tallymen and check traders moved into doorstep moneylending during the 1960s, but in subsequent decades the loss of their best working class customers, owing to increased spending power and the emergence of a broader range of credit alternatives, forced them to focus on the 'financially excluded'. This 'sub-prime' market was open for exploitation by unlicensed lenders, and Sean O'Connell offers the first detailed historical investigation of illegal moneylending in the UK, encompassing the 'she usurers' of Edwardian Liverpool and the violent loan sharks of Blair's Britain. O'Connell contrasts such commercial forms of credit with formal and informal co-operative alternatives, such as 'diddlum clubs', 'partners', and mutuality clubs. He provides the first history of the UK credit unions, revealing the importance of Irish and Caribbean immigrant volunteers, and explains the relative failure of the movement compared with Ireland. Drawing on a wide range of neglected sources, including the archives of consumer credit companies, the records of the co-operative and credit union movements, and government papers, Credit and Community makes a strong contribution to historical understandings of credit and debt. Oral history testimony from both sides of the credit divide is used to telling effect, offering key insights into the complex nature of the relationship between borrowers and lenders.

Book excerpt: Since the turn of the millennium, the British media has been awash with stories of bankers and financiers caught engaging in acts of corporate wrongdoing and financial skullduggery. But just how different are these crimes to those committed in the past? And, is the threat of financial fraud greater today than in bygone years? In this book, Matthew Hollow begins answering these questions by providing an in-depth historical overview of some of the most significant frauds that took place in the British financial sector between 1919 and 1939. Using extensive archival evidence, he reveals the variety of tactics that were employed by interwar fraudsters to conceal their underhand transactions and dupe the British public into handing over their money. He goes on to explore the different factors that motivated these fraudsters many of whom had previously had blemish-free records to engage in these acts of deception and deceit. Rogue Banking is a unique resource for history and finance researchers and students, both in the UK and around the world, who are interested in questions relating to corporate fraud and white-collar crime. This book's interdisciplinary approach also makes it an accessible and informative tool for professionals in accountancy, management and criminology.
