Book The Monetary Question in 1892 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Monetary Question in 1892 Classic Reprint written by Ottomar Haupt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monetary Question in 1892 In the present state of the Monetary Question, when really all parties have been heard, and all the pros and cons of the case submitted to endless discussions on both sides, the value of a new book on the subject may appear doubtful indeed. Nor is it my intention in the least to revive the "battle of standards," which, besides, for me has been lost entirely for silver, since the time the United States have signally failed to contribute to any extent to the rehabilitation of the white metal, while these enormous purchases have even not prevented a further depreciation unheard of in the monetary history of our times. From that moment all my attention has been turned to gold, which under the circumstances can alone in future form the metal for good and honest money. Book The Golden Age of the Quantity Theory

Download or read book The Golden Age of the Quantity Theory written by David E.W. Laidler and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did neoclassical monetary economics, as epitomized by the work of Fisher, Wicksell, and the Cambridge School, evolve from the classical orthodoxy that dominated economics in the 1870s? To answer this question, David Laidler considers the interaction of theoretical developments with contemporary policy debates about bimetallism and the evolution of the gold exchange standard. He argues that neoclassical monetary economics, in which the quantity theory of money played a central role, laid the intellectual groundwork for the replacement of the gold standard by various managed monetary systems in the years following World War I. Laidler is one of the world's foremost experts on monetary economics, and this book provides an illuminating account and analysis of one of the most important periods in the development of that field. Scholars of the history of economic thought and all monetary economists will find that The Golden Age of the Quantity Theory is the most systematic treatment of the development of monetary economics between 1870 and 1914 currently available. Originally published in 1991. Book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.

Book Money Gold and History

Download or read book Money Gold and History written by Lewis E. Lehrman and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authentic and effective American solution is neither esoteric nor complicated. It is simple and straightforward. The solution is authorized by the United States Constitution – in Article I, Sections 8 and 10 whereby the control of the quantity of dollars in circulation is entrusted to the hands of the people because the definition of the dollar was entrusted to Congress. In 1792, Congress defined by statute the dollar as a specific weight unit of precious metal. There it remained for most of American history, especially from 1792 to 1914 because the dollar was precisely defined by congressional statute as a weight unit of gold or silver. This gold standard economic era was America’s longest period of rapid, non-inflationary, economic growth – almost four percent annually – with the budget under control, except during major wars. Congress need only mobilize its unique, constitutional power under Article I “to coin money and regulate the value thereof.” Until 1971 U.S. law defined the gold value of American currency such that paper dollars and bank demand deposits were convertible to their gold equivalent – by the people (1792-1914) and/or by governments (1933-1971). The last vestige of convertibility was terminated by President Richard Nixon’s Executive Order of August 15, 1971. Congress should now exercise its constitutional power to restore discipline in the Federal Reserve System by dollar-gold convertibility, especially because of the proven, budgetary, and economic growth benefits of a dollar as good as gold.
