Book The Last Mojito

Download or read book The Last Mojito written by Bart Edelman and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The poems in The Last Mojito were written between 2000 and 2004. The six distinct sections of the book-the ingredients of the infamous mojito (mint, sugar, lime, rum, ice, and club soda)--were chosen, initially, to impart a rather playful frame to the collection's content. Quite a few of the poems, of course, reveal the presence of alcohol. In almost all cases, more often than not, the mere mention of spirits or booze is employed as a continual theme, helping to open up friendships or any relationships in a way that bring the narrators closer towards a supposed set of insights gained from a glass that's no longer filled with what might pass for liquid truth. Individual poems such as "Enough," "Pub Crawl," "Forbidden City," "Story of His Life," and "I Killed the Poet," explore both probable and improbable situations the speakers face on the road to self-discovery."--Publisher's website.

Book Mojito Cocktail Recipes

Download or read book Mojito Cocktail Recipes written by Katy Lyons and published by Katy Lyons. This book was released on 2022-07-16 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mojito was invented in Havana by the English pirate Sir Francis Drake, following an unsuccessful invasion in the 1500s. As the story goes, his crew were suffering from scurvy and dysentery. The local Cubans had medicine and the pirate and his men went out and collected aguardiente (a generic name for alcohol), mint leaves, lime and sugar cane juice. This mixture was turned into an elixir like drink. Shortly after, a cocktail known as “El Draque” made with similar ingredients, became popular in Cuba. To prepare a mojito, fresh lime juice is added to sugar and mint leaves. The mixture is then gently mashed with a muddler. The mint leaves should only be bruised to release the essential oils, but not shredded. Then rum is added and the mixture is stirred to dissolve the sugar and to lift the mint leaves up from the bottom. This creates a better presentation. Finally, the drink is topped with crushed ice and sparkling soda water. Mint leaves and lime wedges are used to garnish the glass. This cookbook contains many different varieties of traditional and non-traditional recipes for the mojito.

Book excerpt: This unique culinary history of America offers a fascinating look at our past and uses long-forgotten recipes to explain how eight flavors changed how we eat. The United States boasts a culturally and ethnically diverse population which makes for a continually changing culinary landscape. But a young historical gastronomist named Sarah Lohman discovered that American food is united by eight flavors: black pepper, vanilla, curry powder, chili powder, soy sauce, garlic, MSG, and Sriracha. In Eight Flavors, Lohman sets out to explore how these influential ingredients made their way to the American table. She begins in the archives, searching through economic, scientific, political, religious, and culinary records. She pores over cookbooks and manuscripts, dating back to the eighteenth century, through modern standards like How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman. Lohman discovers when each of these eight flavors first appear in American kitchens—then she asks why. Eight Flavors introduces the explorers, merchants, botanists, farmers, writers, and chefs whose choices came to define the American palate. Lohman takes you on a journey through the past to tell us something about our present, and our future. We meet John Crowninshield a New England merchant who traveled to Sumatra in the 1790s in search of black pepper. And Edmond Albius, a twelve-year-old slave who lived on an island off the coast of Madagascar, who discovered the technique still used to pollinate vanilla orchids today. Weaving together original research, historical recipes, gorgeous illustrations and Lohman’s own adventures both in the kitchen and in the field, Eight Flavors is a delicious treat—ready to be devoured.
