Book The Death and Afterlife of the North American Martyrs

Download or read book The Death and Afterlife of the North American Martyrs written by Emma Anderson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-18 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1640s, eight Jesuit missionaries met their deaths at the hands of native antagonists. With their collective canonization in 1930, these men became North America's first saints. Emma Anderson untangles the complexities of these seminal acts of violence and their ever-changing legacy across the centuries. While exploring how Jesuit missionaries perceived their terrifying final hours, she also seeks to comprehend the motivations of those who confronted them from the other side of the axe, musket, or caldron of boiling water, and to illuminate the experiences of those native Catholics who, though they died alongside their missionary mentors, have yet to receive comparable recognition as martyrs. In tracing the creation and evolution of the cult of the martyrs across the centuries, Anderson reveals the ways in which both believers and detractors have honored andpreserved the memory of the martyrs in this "afterlife," and how their powerful story has been continually reinterpreted in the collective imagination. As rival shrines rose on either side of the U.S.-Canadian border, these figures would both unite and deeply divide natives and non-natives, francophones and anglophones, Protestants and Catholics, Canadians and Americans, forging a legacy as controversial as it has been enduring.

Book excerpt: In the 1640s--a decade of epidemic and warfare across colonial North America--eight Jesuit missionaries met their deaths at the hands of native antagonists. With their collective canonization in 1930, these men, known to the devout as the North American martyrs, would become the continent's first official Catholic saints. In The Death and Afterlife of the North American Martyrs, Emma Anderson untangles the complexities of these seminal acts of violence and their ever-changing legacy across the centuries. While exploring how Jesuit missionaries perceived their terrifying final hours, the work also seeks to comprehend the motivations of the those who confronted them from the other side of the axe, musket, or caldron of boiling water, and to illuminate the experiences of those native Catholics who, though they died alongside their missionary mentors, have yet to receive comparable recognition as martyrs by the Catholic Church. In tracing the creation and evolution of the cult of the martyrs across the centuries, Anderson reveals the ways in which both believers and detractors have honored and preserved the memory of the martyrs in this "afterlife," and how their powerful story has been continually reinterpreted in the collective imagination over the centuries. As rival shrines rose to honor the martyrs on either side of the U.S.-Canadian border, these figures would both unite and deeply divide natives and non-natives, francophones and anglophones, Protestants and Catholics, Canadians and Americans, forging a legacy as controversial as it has been enduring.

Book excerpt: This authoritative account of the first Native American woman to be declared a saint by the Church is sure to inspire you. Discover an extraordinary young woman who was called by Pope Blessed John Paul II, God's "bountiful gift" to His Church and a "sweet, frail yet strong figure of a young woman who died when she was only twenty-four years old: Kateri Tekakwitha, the 'Lily of the Mohawks.'" The daughter of a Mohawk chief and a Roman Catholic mother, Kateri (baptized Catherine) Tekakwitha (1656-1680) forms a unique bridge between the Native American community and the Church. Kateri was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1980 and canonized in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. Kateri Tekakwitha's faith and love for Christ in the face of overwhelming hostility and her own debilitating illnesses will encourage you as you seek God's grace to overcome challenges in your own life! She is a powerful role model for converts to the Church, young people striving for chastity, and anyone looking to deepen their own prayer life. She is also a shining example that God's call to holiness is truly universal and is heard by men and women in all walks of life and all ages. Written by experienced and prolific authors Matthew and Margaret Bunson, St. Kateri: Lily of the Mohawks is the most definitive biography of Kateri Tekakwitha. Experience the extraordinary stories of the French Jesuit missionaries, the famed Blackrobes," in the wilderness of North America and the heroic conversions of the Native Americans to the Catholic faith. Follow Kateri's life from when she contracted smallpox as a toddler – a disease that swept through her village – claiming her family and leaving her severely disfigured and half-blinded. Drawn to the Catholic faith by the Bible stories and teachings of the French Jesuits, Kateri amazed them by her perfection of the virtues, her mystical prayer life, and her total love for Christ. Her last words were: "Jesus, I love you." Kateri Tekakwitha's life of faith is an inspiration to everyone!

Book Saint Among Savages

Download or read book Saint Among Savages written by Francis Xavier Talbot and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint among Savages tells the remarkable story of St. Isaac Jogues, a French Jesuit who was killed by Mohawks while serving as a missionary in New France. Coming from a upper middle class life in Orleans, he knew from an early age that he wanted to be a priest and serve abroad as a missionary to risk his life in order to save souls. Along with several others, collectively known as the North American Martyrs, he followed his dreams and met death in the American wilderness. Living with the Huron people in what is now Ontario, he was captured by Mohawk warriors and tortured and held captive for over a year. He escaped back to France with help from the Dutch in New York, and remarkably insisted on going back to New France, even though he knew what he might be facing. Besides Jogues' life there is also a lot of material about the lives and customs of the Native American peoples who lived along the St. Lawrence River.

Book A Shrine in the Mohawk Valley

Download or read book A Shrine in the Mohawk Valley written by Auriesville New York and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Shrine in the Mohawk Valley: The Site of the First Indian Mission in New York State; Scene of the Death of the Missionaries Isaac Jogues and Rene Goupil; Birthplace of Kateri Tekagwitha, "Lily of the Mohawks"; Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs It was under a title like this that Our Lady was first vener ated in the Mohawk Valley. At least, the meaning attached to the name of her first statue which was brought to the Mohawks when their village was at St. Peter's, above Fonda, was Virgin Faithful, Notre Dame de Foye, though Foye would seem to have been the name of a town near Dinant where she was spe cially honored, and whence also statues similar to the statue ven erated there were sent to many places in Europe and to the mis sions in America. At any rate, it was suggestive of the fidelity of Our Lady in life and in death, not only to her Divine Son, but to all her clients; and the missionaries had good reason to be grateful for the fervor manifested by the Indians on the advent of this statue. In 1676 Father Bruyas wrote in the Relations: Since we have this precious treasure in our possession, the church of the Mohawks has completely changed its appearance. The old Christians have regained their fervor, and the number of the new goes on increasing day by day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
