Book excerpt: Sharing authentic personal stories and profound life lessons, Kristen Moeller explores our pervasive human tendency to wait for life and to look outside ourselves for answers. What are you waiting for? Do you find yourself waiting for the right moment? The ideal relationship? The perfect job? Are you waiting for your “real” life to begin? Do think that the gifts of life are right around the corner? That one day you will arrive and everything will be okay? Do you endlessly search, yet never seem to find? Through the sharing of authentic personal stories and profound life lessons, Kristen Moeller explores our pervasive human tendency to wait for life and to look outside ourselves for answers. Too often we are “waiting for Jack”—whatever or whoever “Jack” is. So we don’t try; we give up. We sell out and we forget who we are. We are afraid to succeed, afraid to fail, and afraid to say we are afraid. But as Wayne Gretzky said, “You’ll always miss one hundred percent of the shots you don’t take!” Waiting for Jack will inspire you to get on the path, move forward and take the shot. And. to remember that you don’t have to wait for Jack! “Refreshingly vulnerable, witty and wise. Waiting for Jack feels like a conversation with your best friend over coffee. With an honest approach and take action message, Kristen Moeller motivates readers to make it happen. This book is a special gift!” —Robyn Spizman, New York Times–bestselling author

Download or read book The Ultimate Hand Technique Workshop written by Henrique De Almeida and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-04-15 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ultimate Hand Technique Workshop In this book, "The Drum Set Coach" and Berklee Professor, Henrique De Almeida combines the most important hand techniques every drummer should know. The goal of the book & online course (www.TheDrumSetCoach.Com) is to introduce all drummers with the necessary skills to play "glitch-free" with musical flow and smoothness. This book presents a tremendous amount of vocabulary that has real musical applications for the drum set performance. The exercises and concepts presented in the book will enhance all areas of drumming-time keeping, fills and solo ideas. The highlight of the book (and what makes this book different than any other hand technique books out there) is the musical concepts created with Henrique's "hybrid" sticking system. This new way of practicing mirrors the way we play in real life. This book mixes all the important hand techniques together like never before! Single strokes, accents & rebounds, push & pull, double strokes, paradiddle, basic Moeller strokes, flams, finger control, diddle combinations, odd-groupings-stickings, musical applications with phrasing & flow & music forms, development of solo & Improvisation skills. Stop hauling 40 books around and start saving time and money by practicing all you need for hand technique in one book! This book is not a departure from the teachings of traditional hand technique, it is, however a culmination of the teachings of the top hand technique masters, now in one single book! The materials presented in the book have been well tested over several years and have proven to facilitate great results. The final goal is for the student to be able to be free to express music ideas as close to what he or she imagines as possible. This book present the tools to training your hands and mind so the hands will obey the thoughts behind the ideas quickly resulting in an immediate sound picture of the desired phrase. Playing what we imagine with immediacy, without glitches is the goal of the entire book. "Henrique has the best hand technique of any drummer I've known. And I've known some good ones!" - John Ramsay, Chairman/ Percussion Department, The Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA.

Book Get What s Yours

Download or read book Get What s Yours written by Laurence J. Kotlikoff and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn the secrets to maximizing your Social Security benefits and earn up to thousands of dollars more each year with expert advice that you can't get anywhere else. Want to know how to navigate the forbidding maze of Social Security and emerge with the highest possible benefits? You could try reading all 2,728 rules of the Social Security system (and the thousands of explanations of these rules), but Kotlikoff, Moeller, and Solman explain Social Security benefits in an easy to understand and user-friendly style. What you don't know can seriously hurt you: wrong decisions about which Social Security benefits to apply for cost some individual retirees tens of thousands of dollars in lost income every year. How many retirees or those nearing retirement know about such Social Security options as file and suspend (apply for benefits and then don't take them)? Or start stop start (start benefits, stop them, then re-start them)? Or-just as important-when and how to use these techniques? Get What's Yours covers the most frequent benefit scenarios faced by married retired couples, by divorced retirees, by widows and widowers, among others. It explains what to do if you're a retired parent of dependent children, disabled, or an eligible beneficiary who continues to work, and how to plan wisely before retirement. It addresses the tax consequences of your choices, as well as the financial implications for other investments. Many personal finance books briefly address Social Security, but none offers the thorough, authoritative, yet conversational analysis found here. You've paid all your working life for these benefits. Now, get what's yours.

Learn how to maximize your health coverage and save money. Social Security provides the bulk of most retirees’ income and Medicare guarantees them affordable health insurance. But few people know what Medicare covers and what it doesn’t, what it costs, and when to sign up. Nor do they understand which parts of Medicare are provided by the government and how these work with private insurance plans—Medicare Advantage, drug insurance, and Medicare supplement insurance. Do you understand Medicare’s parts A, B, C, D? Which Part D drug plan is right and how do you decide? Which is better, Medigap or Medicare Advantage? What do you do if Medicare denies payment for a procedure that your doctor says you need? How do you navigate the appeals process for denied claims? If you’re still working or have a retiree health plan, how do those benefits work with Medicare? Do you know about the annual enrollment period for Medicare, or about lifetime penalties for late enrollment, or any number of other key Medicare rules? Health costs are the biggest unknown expense for older Americans, who are turning sixty-five at the rate of 10,000 a day. Understanding and navigating Medicare is the best way to save health care dollars and use them wisely. In Get What’s Yours for Medicare, retirement expert Philip Moeller explains how to understand all these important choices and make the right decisions for your health and wealth now—and for the future.

Download or read book The Moral Fool written by Hans-Georg Moeller and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justice, equality, and righteousness these are some of our greatest moral convictions. Yet in times of social conflict, morals can become rigid, making religious war, ethnic cleansing, and political purges possible. Morality, therefore, can be viewed as pathology-a rhetorical, psychological, and social tool that is used and abused as a weapon. An expert on Eastern philosophies and social systems theory, Hans-Georg Moeller questions the perceived goodness of morality and those who claim morality is inherently positive. Critiquing the ethical "fanaticism" of Western moralists, such as Immanuel Kant, Lawrence Kohlberg, John Rawls, and the utilitarians, Moeller points to the absurd fundamentalisms and impracticable prescriptions arising from definitions of good. Instead he advances a theory of "moral foolishness," or moral asceticism, extracted from the "amoral" philosophers of East Asia and such thinkers as Ludwig Wittgenstein and Niklas Luhmann. The moral fool doesn't understand why ethics are necessarily good, and he isn't convinced that the moral perspective is always positive. In this way he is like most people, and Moeller defends this foolishness against ethical pathologies that support the death penalty, just wars, and even Jerry Springer's crude moral theater. Comparing and contrasting the religious philosophies of Christianity, Daoism, and Zen Buddhism, Moeller presents a persuasive argument in favor of amorality.

Book Genuine Pretending

  • Author : Hans-Georg Moeller
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2017-10-17
  • ISBN : 0231545266

Download or read book Genuine Pretending written by Hans-Georg Moeller and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genuine Pretending is an innovative and comprehensive new reading of the Zhuangzi that highlights the critical and therapeutic functions of satire and humor. Hans-Georg Moeller and Paul J. D’Ambrosio show how this Daoist classic, contrary to contemporary philosophical readings, distances itself from the pursuit of authenticity and subverts the dominant Confucianism of its time through satirical allegories and ironical reflections. With humor and parody, the Zhuangzi exposes the Confucian demand to commit to socially constructed norms as pretense and hypocrisy. The Confucian pursuit of sincerity establishes exemplary models that one is supposed to emulate. In contrast, the Zhuangzi parodies such venerated representations of wisdom and deconstructs the very notion of sagehood. Instead, it urges a playful, skillful, and unattached engagement with socially mandated duties and obligations. The Zhuangzi expounds the Daoist art of what Moeller and D’Ambrosio call “genuine pretending”: the paradoxical skill of not only surviving but thriving by enacting social roles without being tricked into submitting to them or letting them define one’s identity. A provocative rereading of a Chinese philosophical classic, Genuine Pretending also suggests the value of a Daoist outlook today as a way of seeking existential sanity in an age of mass media’s paradoxical quest for originality.

Book You and Your Profile

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hans-Georg Moeller
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2021-05-25
  • ISBN : 0231551592
  • Pages : 149 pages

Download or read book You and Your Profile written by Hans-Georg Moeller and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more, we present ourselves and encounter others through profiles. A profile shows us not as we are seen directly but how we are perceived by a broader public. As we observe how others observe us, we calibrate our self-presentation accordingly. Profile-based identity is evident everywhere from pop culture to politics, marketing to morality. But all too often critics simply denounce this alleged superficiality in defense of some supposedly pure ideal of authentic or sincere expression. This book argues that the profile marks an epochal shift in our concept of identity and demonstrates why that matters. You and Your Profile blends social theory, philosophy, and cultural critique to unfold an exploration of the way we have come to experience the world. Instead of polemicizing against the profile, Hans-Georg Moeller and Paul J. D’Ambrosio outline how it works, how we readily apply it in our daily lives, and how it shapes our values—personally, economically, and ethically. They develop a practical vocabulary of life in the digital age. Informed by the Daoist tradition, they suggest strategies for handling the pressure of social media by distancing oneself from one’s public face. A deft and wide-ranging consideration of our era’s identity crisis, this book provides vital clues on how to stay sane in a time of proliferating profiles.
