Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although introduced30 years ago, the J-matrix method has witnessed a resurgence of interest in the last few years. In fact, the interest never ceased, as some authors have found in this method an effective way of handling the continuous spectrum of scattering operators, in addition to other operators. The motivation behind the introduction of the J-matrix method will be presented in brief. The introduction of fast computing machines enabled theorists to perform cal- lations, although approximate, in a conveniently short period of time. This made it possible to study varied scenarios and models, and the effects that different possible parameters have on the ?nal results of such calculations. The ?rst area of research that bene?ted from this opportunity was the structural calculation of atomic and nuclear systems. The Hamiltonian element of the system was set up as a matrix in a convenient, ?nite, bound-state-like basis. A matrix of larger size resulted in a better con?guration interaction matrix that was subsequently diagonalized. The discrete energy eigenvalues thus obtained approximated the spectrum of the system, while the eigenfunctions approximated the wave function of the resulting discrete state. Structural theorists were delighted because they were able to obtain very accurate values for the lowest energy states of interest.

Book Wave Scattering By Small Bodies Of Arbitrary Shapes

Download or read book Wave Scattering By Small Bodies Of Arbitrary Shapes written by Alexander G Ramm and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-05-24 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents analytical formulas which allow one to calculate the S-matrix for the acoustic and electromagnetic wave scattering by small bodies or arbitrary shapes with arbitrary accuracy. Equations for the self-consistent field in media consisting of many small bodies are derived. Applications of these results to ultrasound mammography and electrical engineering are considered. The above formulas are not available in the works of other authors. Their derivation is based on a mathematical theory for solving integral equations of electrostatics, magnetostatics, and other static fields. These equations are at a simple characteristic value. Convergent iterative processes are constructed for stable solution of these equations. The theory completes the classical work of Rayleigh on scattering by small bodies by providing analytical formulas for polarizability tensors for bodies of arbitrary shapes.

Book Electron Molecule Scattering and Photoionization

Download or read book Electron Molecule Scattering and Photoionization written by P.G. Burke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited papers and selected contributed papers presented at the International Symposium on 'Electron-Molecule Scattering and Photoionization' held at SERC's Daresbury Laboratory, Cheshire, England from 18th to 19th July, 1987. This Symposium was a Satellite Meeting to the XVth International Conference on the Physics of Electronic and Atomic Collisions (ICPEAC I and follows a tradition of Satellite Meetings i. n related areas of collisions held in association with previous ICPEAC's. In order to make this volume as representative of the Symposium as possible 'Hot Topics' presented orally at the meeting together with a few papers selected by the Programme Committee from the contributed posters are included. The Editors are grateful to the authors for responding rapidly to the invitation to submit their contri butions for inclusion in the volume, as indeed they are grateful to all the authors for the high quality of their contributions. The Symposium brought together over 100 scientists from many countries and from broad interdisciplinary backgrounds to hear about current rapid advances in electron-molecule scatteri. ng and photoioniza tion. These advances have been stimulated on the experimental side by the increasing availability of electron beams with millivolt energy resolution, by synchrotron radiation sources and by intense tunable lasers. On the theoretical side the introduction of new computational methods enables accurate predictions to be made, resulting in a new and deeper understanding of the basic physical processes involved.

This book was released on 2009-07-25 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth volume of Light Scattering Reviews is composed of three parts. The ?rstpartisconcernedwiththeoreticalandexperimentalstudiesofsinglelightsc- tering by small nonspherical particles. Light scattering by small particles such as, for instance, droplets in the terrestrial clouds is a well understood area of physical optics. On the other hand, exact theoretical calculations of light scattering p- terns for most of nonspherical and irregularly shaped particles can be performed only for the restricted values of the size parameter, which is proportional to the ratio of the characteristic size of the particle to the wavelength?. For the large nonspherical particles, approximations are used (e. g. , ray optics). The exact th- retical techniques such as the T-matrix method cannot be used for extremely large particles, such as those in ice clouds, because then the size parameter in the v- iblex=2?a/???,wherea is the characteristic size (radius for spheres), and the associated numerical codes become unstable and produce wrong answers. Yet another problem is due to the fact that particles in many turbid media (e. g. , dust clouds) cannot be characterized by a single shape. Often, refractive indices also vary. Because of problems with theoretical calculations, experimental (i. e. , la- ratory) investigations are important for the characterization and understanding of the optical properties of such types of particles. The ?rst paper in this volume, written by B. Gustafson, is aimed at the descr- tionofscaledanalogueexperimentsinelectromagneticscattering.

Book Electron Molecule Collisions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Isao Shimamura

Download or read book Electron Molecule Collisions written by Isao Shimamura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattering phenomena play an important role in modern physics. Many significant discoveries have been made through collision experiments. Amongst diverse kinds of collision systems, this book sheds light on the collision of an electron with a molecule. The electron-molecule collision provides a basic scattering problem. It is scattering by a nonspherical, multicentered composite particle with its centers having degrees of freedom of motion. The molecule can even disintegrate, Le., dissociate or ionize into fragments, some or all of which may also be molecules. Although it is a difficult problem, the recent theoretical, experimental, and computational progress has been so significant as to warrant publication of a book that specializes in this field. The progress owes partly to technical develop ments in measurements and computations. No less important has been the great and continuing stimulus from such fields of application as astrophysics, the physics of the earth's upper atmosphere, laser physics, radiation physics, the physics of gas discharges, magnetohydrodynamic power generation, and so on. This book aims at introducing the reader to the problem of electron molecule collisions, elucidating the physics behind the phenomena, and review ing, to some extent, up-to-date important results. This book should be appropri ate for graduate reading in physics and chemistry. We also believe that investi gators in atomic and molecular physics will benefit much from this book.
