Book Protecting White Spruce Understories when Harvesting Aspen

Download or read book Protecting White Spruce Understories when Harvesting Aspen written by Canada-Alberta Partnership Agreement in Forestry and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was aimed primarily at technology tranfer, demonstrating the integration of silvicultural and harvesting techniques for protecting spruce understories in mixedwoods. This report provides details of the silvicultural component. It stresses post-harvest implications, particularly blowdown risk and growth and yield potential of released understory, and regeneration and growth of spruce, aspen, and poplar on mechanically harvested mixedwood sites. The project addresses concerns about maintaining the coniferous component of mixedwood forests and finding alternatives to clearcutting. It covers the current status of operational understory protection and some related aspects of integrated resource management.

Book Timber harvesting Techniques that Protect Conifer Understory in Mixedwood Stands

Download or read book Timber harvesting Techniques that Protect Conifer Understory in Mixedwood Stands written by E. A. Sauder and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents cost and productivity results, as well as results about the harvesting-related damage incurred by the understory in a mixedwood harvesting trial. The trial compared conventional and Scandinavian harvesting equipment, levels of operational supervision, and special operational techniques. The study took place in the northern boreal forest region of Central Alberta during 1988 to 1990. Recommendations are proposed to guide operators, planners, supervisors, and regulators when they harvest 2-storied mixedwood stands and want to protect a significant portion of the understory.

Book Alternative Silvicultural Systems for Ontario s Boreal Mixedwoods

Download or read book Alternative Silvicultural Systems for Ontario s Boreal Mixedwoods written by Christopher Herbert Richard Wedeles and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarises the potential use of alternative silvicultural (harvesting) systems on the productivity of boreal mixedwood forests. Begins with an overview of the ecology of boreal mixedwoods, including physical environment, stand dynamics, and landscape ecology; then provides detailed reviews of modified clear-cutting systems (including strip cutting, patch cutting, and seed-tree cutting), shelterwood systems, and selection systems (including group selection and individual tree selection). Also briefly discusses the environmental considerations that are associated with these systems (effects on soil, water resources, wildlife, and aesthetics). Concludes with a discussion of areas of uncertainty in the application of alternative systems and the perceived problems that have limited their use in boreal mixedwoods.

Book Minimizing Wind Damage in Alternative Silviculture Systems in Boreal Mixedwoods

Download or read book Minimizing Wind Damage in Alternative Silviculture Systems in Boreal Mixedwoods written by S. Navratil and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews the nature of wind damage in forest stands and relates that damage to the silvicultural systems used or being developed for management of boreal mixedwoods. The report gives detailed consideration to the approaches for minimizing wind damage in released white spruce understory specific to the two-stage harvesting and silvicultural system. The review addresses the individual tree stability, stand stability, and external stability factors such as site characteristics, topography, windiness of the region, and sheltering effects of adjacent stands, and relates these to a framework for recognizing high-risk sites and stands. The report also discusses principles of wind damage management in the context of designing silvicultural systems with incremental wind protection levels.

Book Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest

Download or read book Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest written by Sylvie Gauthier and published by PUQ. This book was released on 2009 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Ecosystem Management. A management approach that aims to maintain healthy and resilient forest ecosystems by focusing on a reduction of differences between natural and managed landscapes to ensure long-term maintenance of ecosystem functions and thereby retain the social and economic benefits they provide to society. That is the definition of forest ecosystem management proposed in this book, which provides a summary of key ecological concepts supporting this approach. The book includes a review of major disturbance regimes that shape the natural dynamics of the boreal forest and gives examples from different Canadian boreal regions. Several projects implementing the forest ecosystem management approach are presented to illustrate the challenges created by current forestry practices and the solutions that this new approach can provide. In short, knowledge and understanding of forest dynamics can serve as a guide for forest management. Planning interventions based on natural dynamics can facilitate reconciliation between forest harvesting needs and the interests of other forest users.

Book Dynamics Silviculture and Management of Mixed Forests

Download or read book Dynamics Silviculture and Management of Mixed Forests written by Andrés Bravo-Oviedo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capacity of mixed forests to mitigate climate change effects by increasing resilience and lowering risks is pinpointed as an opportunity to highlight the role of tree species rich forests as part of complex socio-ecological systems. This book updates and presents the state-of-the-art of mixed forest performance in terms of regeneration, growth, yield and delivery of ecosystem services. Examples from more than 20 countries in Europe, North Africa and South America provide insights on the interplay between structure and functionining, stability, silviculture and optimization of management of this type of forests. The book also analyses the role of natural mixed forests and mixed plantations in the delivery of ecosystem services and the best modelling strategy to study mixed forest dynamics. The book is intended to serve as a reference tool for students, researchers and professionals concerned about the management of mixed forests in a context of social and environmental change.

Book excerpt: The principal objective of the Birds in the Boreal Forest workshop was to foster interaction between those concerned with sustaining forests as an industrial resource and those interested in sustaining forests as a habitat for birds and other wildlife. A total of 25 presentations were given in 5 topical sessions: overviews of biodiversity and boreal ecology; state of knowledge of impacts of forest management on birds in the boreal forest; landscape issues - scaling up' from the stand to the ecosystem; foresters' perspectives on integrated resource management: where are we headed?; and databases and information networks: what do have and what do we need? Eighty six participants attended the workshop. The workshop launches a new research program on forest bird ecology in western and northern Canada.

Book Ecological Silviculture

Download or read book Ecological Silviculture written by Brian J. Palik and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical silviculture has often emphasized timber models, fundamentally based in production agriculture. This books presents silvicultural methods based in natural forest models—models that emulate natural disturbances and development processes, sustain biological legacies, and allow time to take its course in shaping stands. These methods, dubbed “ecological forestry,” have been successfully implemented by foresters for decades managing a wide variety of forestlands. Ecological silvicultural strategies protect threatened and rare species, sustain biological diversity, and provide habitat for game and non-game species, all while providing timber in profitable ways.
