Book Giovan Pietro Bellori The Lives of the Modern Painters Sculptors and Architects

Download or read book Giovan Pietro Bellori The Lives of the Modern Painters Sculptors and Architects written by Giovanni Pietro Bellori and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-21 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete translation of the biographies of fifteen artists, including Annibale Carracci, Carvaggio, Rubens, Van Dyck, and Poussin, written by the seventeenth-century antiquarian Giovan Pietro Bellori. Originally conceived as a continuation of Vasari's famous Lives, it is a fundamental source for seventeenth-century Italian art and artistic theory, providing detailed descriptions of extant and lost works of art, while casting light on the cultural politics of contemporary Rome and the relations between Rome and France. The importance of Bellori's Lives lies in the scrupulous documentation of artists, many of whom he knew personally; the author's detailed descriptions of their works; and his exposition of the classicist theory of art in the introductory lecture, the Idea. This volume contains the twelve Lives published in the original edition of 1672 and three Lives (Guido Reni, Andrea Sacchi, and Carlo Maratti) that survive in manuscript form and that were published for the first time in 1942.

Book From Hegel to Madonna

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Miklitsch
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 1998-02-13
  • ISBN : 143841305X
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book From Hegel to Madonna written by Robert Miklitsch and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-02-13 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Hegel to Madonna presents a genealogical survey of the discourses of negation and affirmation associated with the work of Hegel, Adorno, Deleuze, and Guattari; then, rotating from the philosophical to the political-economic axis, turns to the problem of a general economy of "commodity-fetishism." Drawing on the work of Marx and Freud, Miklitsch mobilizes a new, renewed understanding of "commodity fetishism"--what he calls the commodity-body-sign--in order to examine received notions of consumption and commodification. The aim is to envision a dialectical mode of critique, at once critical and affirmative, that can account for the cultural contradictions of late capitalism. The author also analyzes the phenomenon of Madonna Studies, reading the interest in the pop star as a sign of the academic times, a symptomatic figure not only of cultural studies in all its celebratory, cultural-populist excess but of a critical discourse responsive to postmodern culture in all its politically complex mutability.

Book Gender Branding and the Modern Music Industry

Download or read book Gender Branding and the Modern Music Industry written by Kristin Lieb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender, Branding, and the Modern Music Industry combines interview data with music industry professionals with theoretical frameworks from sociology, mass communication, and marketing to explain and explore the gender differences female artists experience. This book provides a rare lens on the rigid packaging process that transforms female artists of various genres into female pop stars. Stars—and the industry power brokers who make their fortunes—have learned to prioritize sexual attractiveness over talent as they fight a crowded field for movie deals, magazine covers, and fashion lines, let alone record deals. This focus on the female pop star’s body as her core asset has resigned many women to being "short term brands," positioned to earn as much money as possible before burning out or aging ungracefully. This book, which includes interview data from music industry insiders, explores the sociological forces that drive women into these tired representations, and the ramifications for the greater social world.
