This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Vernacular Literature of Hindustan I have been the more willing to exclude these last from our present consideration as they have been already exhaustively dealt with by Garcin de Tassy. I may add that by Hindiistan I mean Raj'putana and the valleys of the J amuna and of the Ganges as far east as the river Kosi, and that I do not include under that term either the Pa ab or Lower Bangal. The vernacular languages dealt with may roughly -be considered as three in number, Mar'wari, Hindi, and Bih ari, each with its various dialects and sub - dialects. One omission must be mentioned with regret. I have refrained from including the large number of anonymous folk - epics and of folk-songs (such as ja t'sdrs, and the like) current throughout Northern India. These can only be collected on the spot from the mouths of the people, and, so far as I am aware, that has only been systematically done in the province of Bihar. I have therefore, after some hesitation, determined to exclude all mention of them from the work, as any attempt to describe them as a whole could only have been incomplete and misleading. Book Nation and Region in Grierson s Linguistic Survey of India

Download or read book Nation and Region in Grierson s Linguistic Survey of India written by Javed Majeed and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Abraham Grierson’s Linguistic Survey of India is one of the most complete sources on South Asian languages. This book is the first detailed examination of the Survey. It shows how the Survey collaborated with Indian activists to consolidate the regional languages in India. By focusing on India as a linguistic region, it was at odds with the colonial state’s conceptualisation of the subcontinent, in which religious and caste differences were key to its understanding of Indian society. A number of the Survey’s narratives are detachable from its rigorous linguistic imperatives, and together with aspects of Grierson’s other texts, these contributed to the way in which Indian nationalists appropriated and reshaped languages, making them religiously charged ideological symbols of particular versions of the subcontinent. Thus, the Survey played an important role in the emergence of religious nationalism and language conflict in the subcontinent in the 20th century. This volume, like its companion volume Colonialism and Knowledge in Grierson’s Linguistic Survey of India, will be a great resource for scholars and researchers of linguistics, language and literature, history, political studies, cultural studies and South Asian studies.

Book The Eighty four Hymns of Hita Hariva a

Download or read book The Eighty four Hymns of Hita Hariva a written by Hita Harivaṃśa Gosvāmī and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CAurasi Pada (Eighty-four Hymns) is a sixteenth-century anthology of devotional Braj Bhasa verses ascribed to Hita Harivamsa, a devotee of Radha. With the delicacy of their language and the intensity of their sentiments, these poems recreate the bucolic world of Jayadeva; and their devotional content gives them an unrivalled place in the history of Vaisnava devotional literature. The text, which comprises the theological basis of the Radhavallabha sampradaya, appears here for the first time in a critical edition and is accompanied by a fully annotated rendering in English. The study which follows the text examines its language and prosody, with particular reference to the musical talas in which it is sung in the contemporary tradition of the Radhavallabhi hymnal; and a further section traces the processes by which the text has been transmitted by sectarian tradition over the centuries.
