Book The Modern Treatment of Nervous and Mental Diseases

Download or read book The Modern Treatment of Nervous and Mental Diseases written by William Alanson White and published by . This book was released on 1913 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, devoted to the treatment of nervous and mental diseases, is designed to meet the needs which the rapid advances in knowledge of neurology and psychiatry have created. The nervous system is here regarded as a whole and as inclusive of the mind, and it is maintained that disturbances of any and all of its functions, mental as well as physical, are proper subjects for therapeutics. The present work lays emphasis upon the psychical side of life as being worth quite as much consideration as the physical. It sets forth doctrines of nervous and mental hygiene, reconstructive factors in social organization as applied to human ills, and endeavors to present a broad front to the pessimistic nihilism in therapeutics that has been too long current in these fields, because the doctor's eyes have been too closely focused on the individual examples and results of human accidents. Neurology and psychiatry offer the widest possible opportunities for preventive medicine as well as for therapeutic optimism. The program here presented is essentially therapeutic. Planned as it has been on a broad scale, the more practical issues confronting the clinician have, nevertheless, been fully met. The editors have sacrificed philosophical views for more definite guideposts wherever, in the present state of our knowledge, such a course seemed wiser. In the light of such a family chart it will be seen that eugenics has both a positive and a negative side. The positive side of eugenics has to do with bringing about desirable conditions, while the negative side has to do with preventing undesirable conditions. Book The Modern Treatment of Mental Nervous Disorders

Download or read book The Modern Treatment of Mental Nervous Disorders written by Bernard Hart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Treatment of Mental Nervous Disorders: A Lecture Delivered at the University of Manchester, on 25th March 1918 "The modern treatment of mental and nervous disorders" is a title which covers a very wide field, a field so wide that to deal with it in any comprehensive and detailed manner within the limits of a single lecture is obviously impracticable. It is, moreover, a highly technical field, requiring for its adequate understanding a theoretical and practical knowledge of medicine which I cannot assume my present audience to possess. The goal which I hope to achieve is, however, a comparatively modest one, and I shall only endeavour to set forth certain aspects of the subject which are of general and not merely of medical interest. In particular I propose to call attention to certain problems which are of importance to the lay public, because their solution vitally concerns the public health. "Mental and nervous disorder" is a popular rather than a technical term, and, like all such terms, its meaning is somewhat loose and indefinite, but, with the help of a few additional words of explanation, it will be sufficiently precise for our present purpose. By "mental disorder" is meant actual insanity, and those minor mental disturbances which are stages on the road to insanity. Book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 4

Download or read book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 4 written by Vikram Patel and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are common, highly disabling, and associated with significant premature mortality. The impact of these disorders on the social and economic well-being of individuals, families, and societies is large, growing, and underestimated. Despite this burden, these disorders have been systematically neglected, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with pitifully small contributions to scaling up cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies. Systematically compiling the substantial existing knowledge to address this inequity is the central goal of this volume. This evidence-base can help policy makers in resource-constrained settings as they prioritize programs and interventions to address these disorders.
