Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Theory of the Bible Of this theory to the interpretation of the history of Israel abolished the Old distinction between sacred and profane history, and put the history of the Jews on the same basis with the history Of the Greeks and Romans. The Darwinian theory Of evo lution gave a scientific basis for this conception of history. According to the theory Of Darwin, man is a developed ape. From a monkey he gradually grew to be a man, passing in countless ages through the successive stages of Paleolithic man, Neolithic man, the Cave man, the Primitive man, until at last he emerged a civilised man. As such he invented the art of writing, and began to make a permanent record of events. Even after he became civilised ln a'measure, that is, began to wear clothes, and to notice things around him, and ask questions about them, he was for a long period of time in a state Of childhood, believed in ghosts, wonder-tales, marvels, and miracles so that the early records Of all nations, the Jews included, con sist Of a mass of mythological stories, that have no historical value, except as illustrations of the crude and undeveloped life Of the primitive people. Book The New Testament Today Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Testament Today Classic Reprint written by Ernest Findlay Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament Today Arouse suspicions of its message than those attempts to conceal or explain away the facts of its origin. The time has surely come when we should try to exchange the old attitude to scripture for one that will be more consistent with the results of modern enquiry. These results, it may be granted, are often one-sided, and in every matter of detail are Open to revision. Those who are best acquainted with them will be the first to admit that they are by no means final. But the main conclu sions at which modern scholars have arrived can no longer be questioned, and have to be taken into account in our estimate of the book. If it is to exercise its proper influence on the new age it must be presented as it really is, not as an ignorant piety has imagined it. The aim of the following chapters is to help, in some small way, towards the new presentation. The book of the primitive church was composed so long ago, out of so many strange elements, that it might seem to have nothing but a historical interest for the mind of our time. Yet it has proved itself, - and never more so than in these changeful days, - to be the most living of all books. Its conceptions of man's needs and duties, of his relation to God and to his fellow-men, have stood every test, and are likely to be enduring. How is it that the ancient book has this permanent value? It was formerly assumed that the riddle could only be answered by a theory of direct inspiration; but such a theory is no longer possible, nor is it necessary. Nothing essen tial is lost to the New Testament when we allow for the historical process whereby it came into being. Its permanent message becomes in many ways more intel ligible, and can be applied more closely to actual needs and circumstances. In any case, the book must be understood in the light of modern knowledge before it can fully appeal to the modern world. In these days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Scripture and the Key to Its Spiritual Sense Then began the assaults of the scientists and critics, whose artillery-has always been directed against the mere letter of Scripture. And how are its divinity and inspiration to be successfully defended, so long as this modern theory of the Bible is maintained by its professed and authorized expounders'? For it cannot be denied that there are, in its literal sense, not a few historic, scientific, and other inaccuracies. Book The Theology of the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theology of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by George Barker Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of the New Testament No one has written on the subject with finer insight and discrimination. The brilliant treatise of Professor Menegoz, entitled he Peehe et la Redemption d'apres St. Paul, has afforded me many useful suggestions. With none of these writers, however, have I been able in all respects to agree. Especially do I dissent from the interpretations given by Wendt and Beyschlag to those portions of the New Testament which relate to the person and work of Christ, and from the presuppositions on which Holtzmann's construction and estimate of New Testament history and theology rest. Appended to the volume will be found a select bibliography which comprises the most important recent literature of the subject. Articles and brochures on minor topics in Biblical Theology, which would be likely to interest only the specialist, have not been included. In accordance with its somewhat general purpose the list is limited to more comprehensive works. A much fuller bibliography, arranged on a different principle, is prefixed to Holtzmann's Lehrbuch. As respects its aim the present work is not apologetic or controversial. It seeks to expound, not to defend. It also recognizes the boundaries between the explicit teachings of the New Testament and inferences which may be drawn from them, however natural or apparently necessary such inferences may seem to be. The limitations of space which were prescribed for the volume have rendered it necessary to bestow careful attention upon the question of proportion and to present the various subjects which are discussed as succinctly as possible. Every chapter has involved a study in condensation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Fresh Look at Genesis 1 2

Download or read book A Fresh Look at Genesis 1 2 written by Gary W Schneider and published by Rio Pindo Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 1132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of this book’s main themes is how God’s ‘Book of Nature’ is concordant with His ‘Book of Scripture’. In their writings, many of the pioneers of the Scientific Revolution often referred to God’s two ‘Books’. These brilliant naturalists were also devout Christians. But that was back then. Is modern science actually compatible with Scripture? More to the point, are the findings of 21st-century science concordant with the Genesis creation story? What else does the text of Genesis 1-2 have to say? While making an honest effort to answer those questions, some vitally-important theological concepts (which were introduced by Moses in the first two chapters of Genesis) are also examined and discussed in this volume. This comprehensive study (on how modern science is concordant with the intended meaning of the text of Genesis 1-2) has many useful features, including the following: Much of the first two parts of the book consists of background material on: (1) logic, (2) history and philosophy of science, and (3) ‘scientific method’, as well as (4) basic geological principles, (5) descriptions of Plate Tectonic theory, and (6) the principles and methods of radiometric dating. This background material is designed to help the reader to understand the implications of the empirical evidence presented in Part Two: God’s Book of Nature. Similarly, there is also extensive material on: (1) Biblical interpretation and hermeneutics, (2) textual criticism, (3) the history of ancient Israel, (4) development of the Hebrew language, and (5) some of the basic elements of Biblical Hebrew. This material is given prior to looking at the literary structure and genre of the Genesis 1-2 text, and then conducting thorough and complete exegetical analyses of the various textual units of Genesis 1-2 in Part Four: God’s Book of Scripture. Prior to the exegetical analyses for each of the textual units of Genesis 1-2, (1) the Biblical Hebrew text, (2) a standard English translation, and (3) an Interlinear version of the text of that unit are provided. The Interlinear version consists of (a) the Hebrew text, with (b) SBL transliterations and (c) English glosses below each one of the Hebrew words. Color coding and other types of annotations/highlighting are used throughout Part Four: God’s Book of Scripture, in order to help the reader identify important Biblical Hebrew elements, including recurring phrases, important BH words, and key BHVS verb forms. There are more than 2000 detailed footnotes. Many of these footnotes also cross-reference other topics in the book to make it easier for the reader to refer back to a discussion of some important theme or concept. Excerpts from the entries of reputable Hebrew and Greek lexicons (for words written in the original languages of the Biblical text) are also footnoted. An Appendix is included with a Key to Transliteration and Pronunciation for Biblical Hebrew graphemes; it also has a short section on Biblical Hebrew Accent Markings. Numerous detailed, colored figures are sprinkled throughout the text. In many of these figures, the artwork itself is worth the inexpensive price of the digital edition of this book. Part Six: The Good News is worth reading as a stand-alone exposition of God’s Grace, but it also helps put the rest of the book in context. Although the most common (and logical) way to read A Fresh Look at Genesis 1-2 is from start to finish, this 1100-page book was also intended to be used as a reference work. Footnotes direct the reader back to pertinent material in preceding chapters that might not have been read already (or that readers might want to revisit, in order to refresh their memory on some topic). Book Astronomy of the Bible Classic Reprint

Download or read book Astronomy of the Bible Classic Reprint written by O. M. Mitchel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Astronomy of the Bible The volume here offered to the public contains the last finished astronomical work of Professor Mitchel; and, with those that he published before his death, constitutes a series which, if not exhaustive of the accepted divisions of the science, presents, in outline, its great physical features and its ethical relations. The Planetary and Stellar Worlds, published in 1848, contained a popular exposition of the important discoveries and splendid theories of modern astronomy. It traced the progress of the great science from the primitive ages, showing how, little by little, the true theory dawned upon the feeble mind of man, fearful and long unwilling to receive it; it presented the great laws, with copious and eloquent illustration; it ofi'ered clear solu tions of the wondrous problems; discussed the discovery of new planets and the characteristics of the cometary world; displayed the grandeur of the scale upon which the universe is built, and showed the benevolent provisions for its perma nent stability. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epoch of Creation: The Scripture Doctrine Contrasted With the Geological Theory The fact that God has made a revelation of his mind and will to man, may not be openly denied but while his Word is admitted and professedly respected, theories are broached at variance with its doctrines, or even irreconcileable with its origin; and which, being associated with all that currently passes for phi losophy and science, are, therefore, only the more imposing to those who would be held in repute for their mental independence and enlargement. Minds of this class are always the first to be captivated by anything which has the aspect of being a new view; and hence, should infidel sentiments ever obtain in the community, it will be chiefly through their influence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its history, the Christian church has had a troubled relationship with the arts, whether literature, poetry, music, visual arts, or other forms of artistic expression. This volume is not designed to resolve the issues, but it is designed to present a number of different statements about various dimensions of the arts in their relationship to the Bible. The Bible is the document that stands behind the Christian church as an inspiration to it and to its arts. As a result, we have divided this volume into six parts: perspectives on the arts, culture and art, visual enactments, contemporary interpretations, music, and the Bible and literature. Many of the issues that the history of the interaction of the arts and the Bible within the Christian church has uncovered are insightfully and artfully addressed by this book. The wide range of contributors runs the gamut from practicing artists of various media to scholars within varied academic fields.
