Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Social Religion From any authority arbitrarily attached, even by reverent love, to his person or to his relation to the modern world. It seemed to me that in this way a wider and more enduring interest in and for the movement could be secured. So it is that I have begun this book as though Bahaism, its founders, its teaching, and its believers did not exist, but have summoned, as it were, a convention of all men and women of goodwill, reverence, and natural though often bewildered faith - a convention which, out of its own experience, comes to agree upon certain fundamental conclusions concerning society and the spiritual life, and certain methods by which these conclusions can best be realized in action. These conclusions are no other than the Bahai teaching; the method is no other than the relation of Baha'o'llah to social evolution. For the deeper interest arising from unprejudiced personal agreement, I willingly forewent the advantage I possessed in the fact that Bahaism has already established itself throughout the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Religion: An Interpretation of Christianity in Terms of Modern Life Boundless wealth is appalled by the squalor grovelling at its doors. Along the avenue rushes Twentieth Century Civilization snugly ensconced in a motor; in the adjacent alley, Terror, in the semblance of a wolf, hunts with lolling tongue and hungry whine. Such so cial injustice - hideous in a barbaric society, grotesque in the United States - constitutes one of the problems of Social Religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Social Order The following pages have been written for, and they are addressed to, the People. For the learned and the curious, there are abundant opportunities of becoming acquainted with the triumphs of the Gospel in the early pagan world; even within the last few years, several treatises have appeared on this suggestive theme. But these books are gener ally large, and they discuss questions that are not of engrossing interest to the Many. The author has tried to avoid all details and discussions not likely to attract the general reader, and to present a brief and popular account of some of the changes wrought in personal character and in social life by the Spirit of Jesus Christ. With what degree of success he has accomplished his self-imposed task, it is for others rather than himself to determine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Evolution of Religion These chapters were originally read to a small group of persons meeting in a private parlor in Boston, under the auspices of the local branch of The Free Religious Association of Amer ica. Not all which was written was read at any of these meet ings, but often many pages were omitted in order that the lecture might be followed by questions and discussions. The lectures have been carefully corrected, many pages excised, many more pages added, and the whole rewritten and thoroughly revised. My friend, John Haynes Holmes, minister of the Community Church in the city of New York, has read the whole of the manuscript, given me the benefit of his suggestions and cor rections, and written the foreword, which states briefly and pertinently that at which I have aimed in my book. Book The Reconstruction of Religion

Download or read book The Reconstruction of Religion written by Charles A. Ellwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reconstruction of Religion: A Sociological View One of the greatest social needs of the present is a re ligion adapted to the requirements of modern life and in harmony with modern science. 1 Since the beginning of the Great War a number of the most dispassionate and detached thinkers of our time have expressed the same general idea. Two eminent British sociologists have re cently expressed themselves thus: We are compelled to the admission (one hard for the student, the man of pure or applied science), that the essential problem of life is not material, but psychical. In a word, life needs to be eupsychic; or in an older word, religious. 2 In May, 1916, Mr. Gr. Lowes Dickinson said in a private conver sation with the author, If I should guess, I would say that the great need of the world, just at present, is more religion. Of course, I mean religion of the right sort; of religion of a certain sort there is a plenty, but not enough of the right sort. 3 Again, in March, 1915, the author had the pleasure of visiting with Mr. Frederic Harrison, the veteran leader of the English Positivists. Mr. Harrison forcefully expressed the opinion that the Great War was due to the decadence of ethical religion, and that the problem of world peace and order would never be settled until the religious question was settled. Book A Social Theory of Religious Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Social Theory of Religious Education Classic Reprint written by George Albert Coe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Social Theory of Religious Education What consequences for religious education follow from the now widely accepted social interpretation of the Christian mes sage? The present work is an attempt to answer this question. The answer is not simple. For the social message does not require us merely to insert this or that new duty into our present scheme of living, but also to judge every detail of conduct from a higher point of view. We are required to organize the whole of life upon a different level. It would be strange indeed if the new meaning that this gives to every-day affairs did not change our outlook upon child life. If we are to be logical and practical in our social Christianity, we must revise our policies with respect to children at least as much as our policies with respect to adults. The chapters that follow undertake to show the directions that this revision will need to take. As we proceed, it will appear that the whole perspective of religious education undergoes a change. The central purpose, to begin with, grows more specific because the nature of good ness is seen to be as concrete as the neighbor who lives next door. Christian experience comes out of the clouds, because in our dealings with our brother whom we have seen we are deal ing with the Father whom we have not seen - yes, we here come into relation with what is deepest in his character and purposes. To Christian ears these statements do not sound strange, per haps, yet when they are applied to the religious life of the young they do sing a new melody. A profounder significance attaches to the will of a child, and especially to his relations with persons, whether children or adults. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Gospel and the New Era The social function of the Christian Church is to bring God more consciously into human relationships with a view to have the Christian life flourish at its best. The reconstruction period has brought an enlarging conception of the kingdom ideal which is leading the modern Church to recast some of its notions and to re adjust its methods, in order to broaden and intensify the personal religious life of the individual and to open up a larger field for social service. Book The Social Basis of Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Social Basis of Religion Classic Reprint written by Simon N. Patten and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Basis of Religion To understand Mill demands a study of his Logic, the place where his views are most fully presented. He there tries to prove universal laws from general inductive experience. This method is the same as that of Professor James who, in his radical empiricism, has the authority of Mill on his side. But a disciple has the right to appeal from this to Mill's subsequent atti tude and to the later development of the social sciences. The purpose of the Logic was to strengthen social reasoning, and it is by this test that it should be judged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Social Religion Unknown as yet to the many, the historical phenomenon of Christianity is repeating itself in our age. Once more, at a time when the established order, both social and spiritual, has lost its original vitalizing principle, and ordinary experience, bewildered by the clash of tradition with new tendencies, is compelled to look outside itself for the creative vision, a master personality has appeared, whose experience gathered from society all that is essential and permanent, gave it a new unity, definition, and significance, and thus restored a universal religious currency to men. The Bahai movement presents many remarkable parallels with Christianity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Revolutionary Function of the Modern Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Revolutionary Function of the Modern Church Classic Reprint written by John Haynes Holmes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revolutionary Function of the Modern Church Many books have been written during the last few years upon the social aspects of religion, and this book may perhaps be regarded as only one more. N 0 one of these books, however, so far as I know, (i) has gathered up the lessons learned of late in other fields of social experience and shown their meaning in terms of religion; (2) has shown that the question of the church is thus not something apart by itself, but only one phase of the modern social question as a whole; (3) or has shown the one fundamental reason why, in dealing with the individ ual, the church, like every other redemptive agency, must go behind the individual and grapple with the social organism itself. It is these three things that this book attempts to do; and it may therefore not unjustly be described, perhaps, as breaking some new ground in this much-ploughed field. The substance of this book has been stated many times during the past year in public addresses in the pulpit and on the platform. The material, however, has been rearranged, and much new material added; so that the work, as here pre sented, is practically new. It is sent forth to that larger audience of readers, which can never be reached by the Spoken word, with much misgiving and many fears, but in the fervent hope that it may at least quicken some minds to a new understand ing of religion, and awaken some hearts to a new service of the Kingdom of God on earth. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Evolution and the Development of Religion An effort has been made to be fair and clear. The author has tried, as far as pos sible, to use the empirical method of study, to find out whatever might be discovered rather than to search for support for theories and predispositions. An effort has also been made to avoid technical language. The purpose of the study is to trace the relation between the development Of society and the development of religion, that light may be thrown upon the relation Of religious and social questions of the present time. It goes forward on the assumption that human life is continuous, carrying results from the past into the present and preparing a way for the future. Download or read book The Social Application of Religion Classic Reprint written by Charles Stelzle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Application of Religion For this awakening, no doubt, the Church is largely responsible. Certain it is that, for her own sake and for the work's sake, she must be closely identified with it. The age will suffer, civilization will languish, if evangelism and social service, which are but parts of one enterprise, should be brought into opposition or should even be separated. The Church, if she is to retain the confidence of the people, must be the servant of the people with their multitudinous needs. She must not only preach love, but prove love by a service that seeks no return. She must not only preach courage, but be bold in her attitude toward those who are strong and cruel. She must offer faith, and she must also have faith enough to stake her very existence on the ultimate triumph and the present supremacy of righteousness and peace. If the wreck of our civilization is to be averted, the Church must be the champion of the weak. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
