Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Photography: Practical, Theoretic, and Applied The book OF photography has been prepared at the request of many readers of my smaller books on the subject who have expressed a wish for a comprehensive treatise, My own practice in Photography dates back to the time when the operator prepared each plate for his own use; first by a tedious process of cleaning the glass, next by dexterously flooding it with collodion, and finally by sensitising it in a bath of silver nitrate. My first photographs, some of which I still possess, were taken with apparatus wholly my own construction, which served its purpose quite satisfactorily for many years. Piquepe, and Other Experts, French, English, and American It is well said that the legitimate functions of retouching are the removal of blemishes and the correction of such inequalities as those caused in the photographic reproduction of colors, which are often untrue to nature. Its debatable Sphere is the softening of shadows and lines in the features in conjunction with attempts to alter the expression. Book The A B C of Artistic Photography in Theory and Practice Classic Reprint

Download or read book The A B C of Artistic Photography in Theory and Practice Classic Reprint written by Arthur James Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The A B C of Artistic Photography in Theory and Practice Therefore, instead of starting where D. 0. Hill left off some sixty years past, and going on to conquer the method of pure photography, the picture makers first employed themselves in the imitation of Vic torian Academicians; then in the combination of portions of various negatives in one print and lastly in manipulating effects by the oil or gum process that might have been attained with greater ease and certainty by stump or paint-brush. During this time the pursuit of plain, straightforward photography was principally neglected. Now, thanks to the steadfastness of certain English purists and the influence of the American Photo Secession, there are signs of a return to the methods of D. 0. Hill. This is surely the commencement of a real photographic advance towards honest Art. Unfortunately, there is a gap between the photo graphic writers oi the older school and the purely practical or purely artistic writers of the present, and I am making a tentative effort to fill this gap until the new movement breeds its own literature. Book The Advance of Photography

Download or read book The Advance of Photography written by A. E. Garrett and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Advance of Photography: Its History and Modern Applications Nearly forty years have now elapsed since the first edition of Vogel's "Chemistry of Light and Photograph" was issued, and no revision has been made of that work since 1883. During the last thirty years the science of photography has developed with very rapid strides. The perfection of the dry plate, the introduction of orthochromatic photography, and the scientific investigation of the many problems confronting the practical photographer have been landmarks in that progress. Then, again, much interest has centred round the application of photography for recording results obtained in various branches of scientific research; while the advent of Rontgen-ray photography, the transmission of photographs from place to place by electrical means (photo-telegraphy), and the improvements made in the photography and projection of photographs of moving objects, have opened up new fields of interest for workers in this science. On the other hand, Vogel's "Chemistry of Light and Photography" is still considered a classic with respect to those branches of the subject with which it deals. Thus, although the present book is of necessity practically a new work, it is based upon the lines laid down in the original publication. Book The Principles and Practice of Photography Familiarly Explained

Download or read book The Principles and Practice of Photography Familiarly Explained written by Jabez Hughes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Photography Familiarly Explained: Being a Manual for Beginners, and Reference Book for Expert Photographers; Comprising the Collodion Process The word photography means drawing, engraving, or writing by Light. You are doubtless aware that white light - light from the sun, for instance - is composed of three different colours Yellow, Red, and Blue it also possesses three distinct properties - Illuminating, Heating, and Chemical powers. These three powers are singularly connected with the three colours.' The Illuminating property exists mainly in the Yellow Rays - the Heating property in the Red - and the Chemical in the Blue or Violet rays. With the Illuminating power you are daily familiar the July sun gives certain proof of its Heating power 5 and it is your present purpose to learn that all Photography is based on its Chemical power. For the full explanation of these facts I must refer you to Hunt's Researches on Light 3 in that excellent work is detailed in a most satisfactory manner the threefold function of a sunbeam - to illuminate, to heat, and to produce chemical change. That these three properties are distinct from each other is proved by their being separable from each other. Thus, black glass stops the illuminating and the chemical rays, but allows the heating rays to pass through 3 dark blue glass arrests the heating and illuminating rays, but allows the chemical ones to get through; while yellow or orange glass admits light and heat, but denies passage to the chemical rays.
