Upon the departure of, charles, the dukes of Frinii, Spoleto, and Benevento, who had fubmitted to the Franks only becaufe they were not able to rehli them, revolted from their alle giance, and declared themfelves fovereigns in their terri tories; but Charlemagne, who was then engaged in a war with the Saxons, being informed oftheir rebellion by pope Adrian, marched, though in the middle of winter, with his army into Ital and having defeated Rotgand, duke of Friuli, whom he afterwards beheaded, by this vielory ftopped the progrefs of the revolt, and forced the dukes of bpoleto and Benevento to a fubmillion. As they had not openly appeared in arms, he continued them in their dukedoms, and contented himfelf with a renewal of their allegiance; but he added the cities of the dukedom of Friuli to his kingdom, and gave the command Of them to Franks and Aufirafians. It appears there are fuch, but not fo tall, in a part called Patagonia, from the relation of admiral Byron; but as to the inhabitants in general, we have been undeceived in this particular by lir John Narborough, 'who informs us, that both men and women are of a middle Pta ture, and well proportioned, with roundifh faces, and low foreheads. Their eyes are black, and their nofes of a middle lize; their teeth are very white, and clofe fet; but their ears are fmall. Their hair is black, and both men and women wear it They are' full-breaded, and their complexion is of an olive tawny, or rather red. They greafe their bodies, and their faces are daubed with fpots down their cheeks that are both white and black, without any method. They have fmall heads, and ibort fingers; and they are'aetivc and nimblein all their motions; their cloaths are made up with pieces of the {kins of feals, guanacoes, and otters, fewed together, and are in the form of carpets, about five feet fquare. They wrap them about their bodies as the Scots do their plaids and they have alfo caps made of the {kins of fowls, with the feathers on. Infiead of fhoes, they have pieces-of {kin tied on their feet. They are a very hardy people, and feldom wear their garment when they are {tirring about; but were quite naked from. Head to foot when he faw them, which was at'a time when the hills were covered with fnow. They have no hair on their bo dies or faces, nor any thing to cover, their'private parts; only fome Of the women had a piece of {kin before them. The garments of both feres are the fame, except that the women had bracelets of {bells about their necks. The men are of a larger fize than the women, and their faces more full. The fpeech of the men is very harfh, and when they talk there is a rattling in their throat; but that of the wo men is {hriller and lower. They live upon what they get, and they are under no government; neither have they the leali lign of religion. The men have always bows that are ready rung, which are about an ell long, and their ar rows about eighteen inches: thefe are headed at one end with int, and at the other there are two feathers tied on with the twilled gut of a beaft. They have very large, mun grei dogs, of'feveral colours, belides which they'have no domeftic animal. M.
