Book A Reference Guide for English Studies

Download or read book A Reference Guide for English Studies written by Michael J. Marcuse and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious undertaking is designed to acquaint students, teachers, and researchers with reference sources in any branch of English studies, which Marcuse defines as "all those subjects and lines of critical and scholarly inquiry presently pursued by members of university departments of English language and literature.'' Within each of 24 major sections, Marcuse lists and annotates bibliographies, guides, reviews of research, encyclopedias, dictionaries, journals, and reference histories. The annotations and various indexes are models of clarity and usefulness, and cross references are liberally supplied where appropriate. Although cost-conscious librarians will probably consider the several other excellent literary bibliographies in print, such as James L. Harner's Literary Research Guide (Modern Language Assn. of America, 1989), larger academic libraries will want Marcuse's volume.-- Jack Bales, Mary Washington Coll. Book New Media and Perennial Problems in Foreign Language Learning and Teaching

Download or read book New Media and Perennial Problems in Foreign Language Learning and Teaching written by Liliana Piasecka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-28 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book concerns the ways in which the new media shape communication along with educational expectations and practices in foreign language classrooms. Although foreign language learners have cheap and easy access to information and ways of communication, they also wrestle with problems that have always accompanied language learning. The focus of the book is two-fold. On the one hand, the authors demonstrate how using social networks, videoconferencing, mobile phones, wikis, and computer-mediated interaction contributes to the development of language skills, negotiated interaction, autonomy, and intercultural competence. On the other, they discuss “old” issues pertaining to the role of vocabulary, corrective feedback, textbooks and inner speech in the process of language learning and use. Every chapter reports original empirical research on issues related to the new media and old problems in foreign language teaching contexts in various countries, and with respect to various age groups.

Book Effective Language Learning

Download or read book Effective Language Learning written by Suzanne Graham and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 1997 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates some of the learning processes of students of French and German as they begin language learning at an advanced level, a stage which is frequently problematic. By looking at the learning strategies employed by both successful and less successful language students, the author elucidates some of the key cognitive and affective processes which facilitate advanced level language learning. The implications of this for the classroom are discussed in detail, leading to practical recommendations for learning and teaching strategies. A central theme is the need to teach explicitly the proficient use of learning strategies, and suggestions are made as to how this may be achieved in the language classroom.
