Book The Modern Drama an Essay in Interpretation

Download or read book The Modern Drama an Essay in Interpretation written by Ludwig Lewisohn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Drama an Essay in Interpretation With a few honourable exceptions books about books are apt, at present in America, to be anything but critical. An account of the modern drama, therefore, that aims at historical orderliness and intellectual coherence need not, perhaps, offer an excuse for its existence. My study is not one of phases or aspects but of the whole subject which I have attempted to grasp and to interpret as a whole. If I have succeeded in any measure, this volume should prove of real usefulness to students, teachers and critics of the drama. I have omitted any discussion of the theatre of Italy and Spain. No criticism can be fruitful which is not based on an intimate acquaintance with the idiom which that literature employs. But this omission represents no absolute loss. Italy and Spain have followed and exemplified the tendencies and methods of the modern theatre. They have neither changed them nor originated others. Book The Social Significance of the Modern Drama Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Social Significance of the Modern Drama Classic Reprint written by Emma Goldman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Significance of the Modern Drama IN order to understand the social and dynamic significance of modern dramatic art it is necessary, I believe, to ascertain the difference between the functions of art for art's sake and art as the mir ror of life. Art for art's sake presupposes an attitude of aloofness on the part of the artist toward the com plex struggle of life: he must rise above the ebb and tide of life. He is to be merely an artistic conjurer of beautiful forms, a creator of pure fancy. That is not the attitude of modern art, which is preeminently the reflex, the mirror of life. The artist being a part of life cannot detach himself from the events and occurrences that pass pan orama-like before his eyes, impressing themselves upon his emotional and intellectual vision. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of Modern Drama This is essentially a study, therefore, not of dramatists, but of dramas; not of dramatic history, but of dramatic kinds and moods. So far, at least, its treatment is novel. The author hopes, moreover, that his analyses of some two hundred and eighty typical plays, together with his bibliog raphy of such plays and of critical works that treat of them, may prove useful to the general reader and to the college student. Book Otto Kahn

Download or read book Otto Kahn written by Theresa M. Collins and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early decades of the twentieth century, almost everyone in modern theater, literature, or film knew of Otto Kahn (1867-1934), and those who read the financial press or followed the news from Wall Street could scarcely have missed his name. A partner at one of America's premier private banks, he played a leading role in reorganizing the U.S. railroad system and supporting the Allied war effort in World War I. The German-Jewish Kahn was also perhaps the most influential patron of the arts the nation has ever seen: he helped finance the Metropolitan Opera, brought the Ballets Russes to America, and bankrolled such promising young talent as poet Hart Crane, the Provincetown Players, and the editors of the Little Review. This book is the full-scale biography Kahn has long deserved. Theresa Collins chronicles Kahn's life and times and reveals his singular place at the intersection of capitalism and modernity. Drawing on research in private correspondence, congressional testimony, and other sources, she paints a fascinating portrait of the figure whose seemingly incongruous identities as benefactor and banker inspired the New York Times to dub him the "Man of Velvet and Steel."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Drama: Its Law and Its Technique Of Freytag's illustrations from modern drama, many are based on German plays, and are thus less illuminating to the average American reader even the college student than to the German audience for whom they were intended; hence they greatly increase the bulk of the book without adding pro portionately to its effectiveness. I have confined mv illustrations more strictly to English literature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Study of the Drama Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Study of the Drama Classic Reprint written by Brander Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Drama As we seize the importance of these lines of ap proach, the historical and the practical, we see that a soundknowledge of the drama is not possible unless we seek to attain both a perspective of its develop ment and an insight into its technic. Just as the study of music is most stimulating when it includes an in quiry into the value of each of the several instruments, and also into their gradual combination into the most marvelous instrument of them all, the modern orches tra, so the study of the drama is most likely to be profit able when it leads us to consider the successive modi fications in the shape and size of the theaters wherein plays were acted; the varying circumstances of per formance to which the playwrights had to conform; the conventions of the art, some of them shifting from century to century or from country to country, and some of them immutable in the very nature of the drama. Especially stimulating is it for us to recognize the real unity of history, the continuity of the art of the drama, which enables us so often to explain the past by the present and the present by the past. Book Art of the Drama Classic Reprint

Download or read book Art of the Drama Classic Reprint written by Fred B. Millett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art of the Drama This book is not a history of the drama. Nor is it a manual for the multitudes who aspire to write plays and sell them. It is a tool for the use of those who wish to deepen their understanding and enhance their enjoyment of plays witnessed in the theater or read in the study. As a textbook, it may prove useful in the study of the history of the drama or of the drama as a literary type, or in such a course as the Introduction to the Study of Drama as given at the University of Chicago. The book is divided into three parts, each of which emphasizes a particular aspect of the drama. Part I is mainly devoted to the historical aspect of the drama, the spirit of the age, the nature of the theater and audience in each of the major periods in dramatic his tory. It also contains a general discussion of the major forms or types of drama - tragedy, comedy, melodrama, and farce - and a more detailed consideration of the types of drama and comedy characteristic of each period. Part II considers the major modes of drama - classicism, romanticism, realism, sentimentalism, symbol ism, and expressionism. Part III concerns the major problems of dramatic technique and the characteristic solutions of those prob lems in the various types and modes and periods of drama. There is no question that it would have been more logical to con sider first the technical, second the aesthetic, and third the historical approach to the study of drama, and students of a logical turn of mind will have no difficulty in using the text in that order. But we have come to feel that it will, in general, be preferable for the student to master the facts in Part I before he ventures upon the more theoretical considerations of Parts II and III. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international sensation that illuminates the experiences women are supposed to hide—from addiction, anger, sexual assault, and infertility to joy, sensuality, and love. WINNER OF THE AN POST IRISH BOOK OF THE YEAR • “Emilie Pine’s voice is razor-sharp and raw; her story is utterly original yet as familiar as my own breath.”—Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love Warrior In this dazzling debut, Emilie Pine speaks to the events that have marked her life—those emotional disruptions for which our society has no adequate language, at once bittersweet, clandestine, and ordinary. She writes with radical honesty on the unspeakable grief of infertility, on caring for an alcoholic parent, on taboos around female bodies and female pain, on sexual violence and violence against the self. This is the story of one woman, and of all women. Devastating, poignant, and wise—and joyful against the odds—Notes to Self is an unforgettable exploration of what it feels like to be alive, and a daring act of rebellion against a society that is more comfortable with women’s silence. Praise for Notes to Self “Notes to Self begins as a deceptively simple catalogue of the injustices of modern female life and slyly emerges as a screaming treatise on just what it means to make your own rules, turning the hand you’ve been dealt into the coolest game in town. Emilie Pine is like your best friend—if your best friend was so sharp she drew blood.”—Lena Dunham, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Not That Kind of Girl “To read these essays is to understand the human condition more clearly, to reassess one’s place in the world, and to reclaim one’s own experiences as real and valid.”—Sunday Independent “Harrowing, clear-eyed . . . Everyone should consider [this] priority reading.”—Sunday Business Post “Incredible and insightful—an absolute must-read.”—The Skinny “Agonizing, uncompromising, starkly brilliant. . . . [A] short, gleamingly instructive book, both memoir and psychological exploration—a platform for that insistent internal voice that almost any woman . . . wishes they had ignored.”—Financial Times “Do not read this book in public. It will make you cry.”—Anne Enright
