Book The Architectural Model

Download or read book The Architectural Model written by Matthew Mindrup and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of different uses for the architectural model through history—as sign, souvenir, funerary object, didactic tool, medium for design, and architect's muse. For more than five hundred years, architects have employed three-dimensional models as tools to test, refine, and illustrate their ideas. But, as Matthew Mindrup shows, the uses of physical architectural models extend beyond mere representation. An architectural model can also simulate, instruct, inspire, and generate architectural designs. It can be, among other things, sign, souvenir, toy, funerary object, didactic tool, medium, or muse. In this book, Mindrup surveys the history of architectural models by investigating their uses, both theoretical and practical. Tracing the architectural model's development from antiquity to the present, Mindrup also offers an interpretive framework for understanding each of its applications in the context of time and place. He first examines models meant to portray extant, fantastic, or proposed structures, describing their use in ancient funerary or dedicatory practices, in which models are endowed with magical power; as a medium for architectural reverie and inspiration; and as prototypes for twentieth-century experimental designs. Mindrup then considers models that exemplify certain architectural uses, exploring the influence of Leon Battista Alberti's dictum that models be simple, lest they distract from the architect's ideas; analyzing the model as a generative tool; and investigating allegorical, analogical, and anagogical interpretations of models. Mindrup's histories show how the model can be a surrogate for the architectural structure itself, or for the experience of its formal, tactile, and sensory complexity; and beyond that, that the manipulation, play, experimentation, and dreaming enabled by models allow us to imagine architecture in new ways.

Book Architecture and Modelbuilding

Download or read book Architecture and Modelbuilding written by Alexander Schilling and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architectural models are used at various stages of a project. As working models they support the design process: they are made up from time to time using simple materials, such as cardboard, without any attempt at accuracy, and continue to be adjusted and added to as the ideas and the design progress. The point here is to swiftly check a design idea, to allow it to be continued or dismissed. Presentational models are more involved; at this stage the design has been completed and the purpose of the model is to convey the ideas to the potential user in a clear and easy-to-understand way. The book Architecture and Model Building includes outstanding examples explaining the possibilities of this medium and, at the same time, provides comprehensive information on materials and techniques.

Book Architectural Model Building

Download or read book Architectural Model Building written by Roark T. Congdon and published by Fairchild Books. This book was released on 2010-04-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in computer-aided design have proven to be an invaluable tool for the architect and designer, yet Frank Gehry still begins his creative process by making "simple" models out of modest materials. Drawings and video, while an essential part of the design process, are still not substitutes for the tactile sensation one receives from a scale model. Drawing on 20 years experience in art and architecture, the author has developed this book on model making as it applies to students and professionals of the built environment. More than 300 photographs illustrate a multitude of techniques and the use of a wide variety of materials, providing a solid foundation for students and professionals to create and enjoy three-dimensional model making for interior design, architecture, landscape architecture, furniture design, theatrical design, and retail merchandising.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Model Architect, Vol. 2 of 2: A Series of Original Designs for Cottages, Villas, Suburban Residences, Etc., Accompanied by Explanations, Specifications, Estimates, and Elaborate Details Many other methods have been successfully tried to preserve wood. Sunking it is an excellent practice, but charring is better where the use of the timber admits it, as in posts. The plan has been in some cases adopted of placing the wood in a large air-tight chamber, and producing a vacuum. This rapidly evaporates the juices of the wood which are condensed in another chamber, but the process is mostly used when the introduction of foreign substances as oil is intended. Tar isan excellent preservative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Model Architect Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Model Architect Vol 1 of 2 written by Samuel Sloan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Model Architect, Vol. 1 of 2: A Series of Original Designs for Cottages, Villas, Suburban Residences, Etc., Accompanied by Explanations, Specifications, Estimates, and Elaborate Details; Prepared Expressly for the Use of Projectors and Artisans Throughout the United States The present work was undertaken with considerable deference and not without forethought. For some time previous to its commencement the author had been engaged in preparing designs for a large number of country residences to be erected in widely distant places, and was forcibly struck with the great want Of information displayed by those concerned in these matters. It is true that much has been written and read on the subject, and a great number of handsomely engraved designs on fine paper have been pre sented to the public, threatening annihilation to the architect's bill, but no one knows so well as he who has trusted in these promises, the difference between a beautiful picture and a comfortable dwelling. In short such works as have come under notice are quite inadequate to the end proposed. They inculcate very false ideas in the general reader, and give to the builder no new or valuable information. They are much better ornaments for the centre table, than guides to a practical man. Impressed with these views, the author was led to believe that the production of a matter of fact business like book on cottages and country residences was a desideratum. A work that should contain a series Of original designs, adapted to every grade of living, from the humblest cottage to the noblest man sion, all accurately delineated to a scale, so that every one might examine for himself and judge of their practicability. He also deemed it requisite that these designs should be complete, comprising both elevations and plans, together with all such details as are usually made out in the form of working drawings, so that the builder might have all parts, both ornamental and constructive, immediately before his eye. In connexion with these, there should be such specifications and bills of quantities as are usually prepared by an architect, and in addition, articles on the various parts of the building that should furnish valuable information to the experienced man and to the learner.
